They never truly made peace. Peter remained bitter, even after Bob passed. The source of Peter’s annoyance was of course the lingering distaste over Bob not resisting Chris Blackwell’s desire to make Bob the frontman of “The Wailers” and renaming the band “Bob Marley & The Wailers.” The other issue that grated Peter was that Peter was an integral part of Bob’s songwriting process in the 1960s and early 1970s, and Bob recycled some old material to use in his later hits with “Bob Marley & The Wailers.” Naturally, Peter felt he was owed royalties from these songs. Peter’s comments about Bob after Bob’s passing weren’t exactly “mournful.” But of course what he said and projected in public, might not be how he really felt in private. After all, the people who we feel hurt by the most, happen to be the very same people we love the most.

@@GhostRAOfficial Hearing some of Peter’s comments about Bob after Bob passed, even at a concert-coldly referring to him as “dead,” it almost sounded like Peter was gloating over Bob’s passing. But I think Peter truly believed that Bob danced with Babylon and Babylon got him. A man like Peter would not have believed that Bob’s cancer was natural, and that if Bob was indeed righteous, then he wouldn’t have been struck down and suffered so. But who’s to judge? Look at the violent manner in which Peter himself died just 6 years later.

In the moment a true sign of respect. Peter and Bob are like Martin and Malcolm in terms of their messages. Also, in terms of polarizing the fans in terms of support. I like both, Peter's (and Bunny's) resentment is understandable as is Bob's opportunity to break out and become the megastar that he is to this day and forever. Neither were saints and I do believe those stories and them and drugs. I have spoken to people who rolled with Bob. In the end that stuff is irrelevant to the LEGEND of BOB. Heartwarming!!

Excellent channel and beautiful anecdotes ... Thanks R.A.S.. I think there are some big misunderstandings in this whole story. First of all, I don't see all this bitterness in Peter's statements after Bob leaves his body. According to Rastafarian beliefs, Peter did not believe in death at all and even less in funerals. He also wrote the song Burial and has said millions of times that we are reincarneted souls. I remember an interview where he referred to Bob as a spiritual being and I can bet that wasn't the first or last life they spent together. He was certainly very disturbed by being continually compared to Bob but this was a problem he had with the press and with public opinion...as he repeatedly said and sung, he felt belittled. The point is that, since the beginning with the Wailers, Peter has been relegated to being a background vocalist. As Peter himself said, he and Bunny had decorated Bob's tunes with beautiful harmonies for nearly a decade... But Peter wasn't just a background vocalist and when he realized there was no room for another lead singer in the Wailers, he rightfully embarked on his solo career. We might think there was a lack of friendliness in the group as Bunny said when he left Blackwell but Peter and Bob didn't follow along… But who knows what Jah said to Bob? In the end we have three incredible artists and three great solo careers, lots of music, lots of gigs… would it have been possible if they had stayed together? p.s. The first versions of Who the Cap Fits and The Thoughest were released long before they split

I think Peter was just annoyed with people always bringing him up and the nerve of anybody telling him how to mourn HIS brother. He told Esther Anderson Bobs ex and friend of both that he was very sad. I also read that even after the break up they still saw eachother in Jamaica quite a bit and when Peter was beat by police Bob went immediately to get him released and ended up getting locked up himself and Peter then immediately went to do the same. They were just tough homeboys who didnt bow to eachother and Peter didnt want to always answer questions about Bobs greatness when he himself was just as good but due to his refusal to compromise at all was never elevated. He had reason to be bitter but he blamed Chris Blackwell for using Bob. He had to go solo eventually he was too great a singer and Chris wanted to keep him in back. But imagine your brother whom you were closest too dies and everyone, who didnt know him or not like you did, is judging you on your reaction. Your gonna respond angrily cuz you really knew the real person when he had nothing but his brothers support. Plus a man like Peter isnt gonna cry in front of anyone especially the media who tried to break them up. He put on his tough face like always and only let his close friends see him vulnerable. Thats how Trenchtown made him.

Well, it's not exactly true that Chris wanted to keep him back; if Tosh had been patient enough, until he was able to come up with an entire album of good songs, Blackwell would definitely have released it (just as he did with Bunny Wailer). But Tosh wanted everything immediately - although finally, even after leaving the Wailers and Island recs. it still took him until 1976 to come up with an album's worth of material (that is, just 9 songs, partially consisting of remakes of older work, and besides some great tracks also including a few fillers). Note that on the Wailers' first two Island LP's, 'Catch a Fire' has two Tosh songs (both being already - albeit very good - remakes of older tunes), and 'Burnin' only one (a new one, but of slighty lower quality already). So it turned out that, at the time he broke up with Blackwell, being a much less prolific songwriter than Bob, he simply didn't have enough song material (yet) to be launched as a solo artist.

Put the many glory the whites bestowed on Bob Marley aside and you will see that nobody would have heard about him as we hear about Peter Tosh today. Though they hated Peter and tried to cover his capabilities, they failed because Tosh is the king. They couldn't cover the real king of reggae even though they tried so hard!

🤣 Not kidding, are you? If it wasn't for his former Wailers membership, thus for having been Bob Marley's bandmate, Tosh would never have had the international exposure he did get, and would have been long forgotten by now.

@@bernardopokuappiah3012 As far as I know, Bob was not especially renowned as a guitarist but mainly as a singer/songwriter, so who taught him how to play the instrument (which was Rita's father, Papa Roy Anderson, by the way) is not that important. Moreover, before Tosh had ever set foot in a recording studio or even had joined the Wailers, Bob Marley already had released a couple of singles as a solo artist ("Judge not"; "One cup of coffee",...), so this whole "teacher-pupil" thing Tosh kept on bragging about (that is, only after Bob's death) is just nonsense. And who exactly were those whites who tried to cover up Tosh' capabilities? After all it was the Rolling Stones who took him to the international stage, if I'm not mistaken...

@@fredvan6043 you got it completely wrong. It was known on record that Peter Tosh taught Bob Marley how to play guitar before Bob died, and Bob knew about this truth. And like you admitted, Tosh didn't take any interest in telling this secret until bob's death when those who knew about the truth really began talking about it. And so Peter Tosh had to say what he knew. And again your claim that Bob Marley was a complete icon when he joined the group is a mere falacy. Bob was just like Hip pop star when he first joined the group, and as such, the influence of Tosh would serve as a catalyst to quicken the soft Bob. That being said, songs like "Get up stand Up was 75% written by Peter Tosh when Both were together and yet Bob took the song as though it was his. To me Tosh and Bunny wailer were robbed and they were denied their rightful royalties. Chris Blackwell, did all that he could to get Bob overrated and hated Tosh and Bunny with passion. It is on record that bunny and Tosh were curtailed from performing their own songs when the three were together, Bob would always play the leading role even though Bob wasn't better than the two. So I say let's strip off the designed mainstream support bob had from the whites and you would know that Tosh is the greatest!

@@bernardopokuappiah3012 Well... It's hard to reply to so much ignorance without getting too lengthy... But still. 1° I never said Bob was an icon before the Wailers got together, I just said that unlike Tosh he already had experience as a recording artist. And that, being far from an accomplished musician by then, Tosh would have had very little to teach, except for some basic guitar chords (unlike Bob's father in law, who gave him his first guitar and - himself being a professionally trained musician - taught him how to play it properly). Still, there's no denying that as a guitarist, Tosh' influence on the group's songwriting process was important (but that doesn't make him a 'teacher', as just like the other guys he had to learn along the way). 2° Even Tosh himself never claimed (not even after Bob's death) to be the main author of "Get up stand up" (like he falsely did with Joe Higgs' "Stepping razor", btw). You seriously believe that, having written such a massive song that finally might have given him his part of the stardom he was so desperately seeking, Peter would have come up to his bandmates, saying “look, Bob, I’ve got this great tune that might become a big hit, so I suggest you sing the leading part and take the credit for it”? Yea right! 🤣 3° It was not Blackwell who put Marley to the fore at the expense of Peter and Bunny, since Bob was already considered the group’s leader (being the most gifted and prolific songwriter of the three) long before they joined Island records. Not only Bob wrote most songs, but already from the start of the 1970’s Tosh - wanting to pursue solo success - also tended to keep some of his best material for himself instead of releasing it under the Wailers’ imprint (hence “Can’t blame the youth”, "Arise black man" or “No sympathy” never made it onto an Island Wailers album). Moreover, it was (black producer) Lee Perry who in 1970 changed the group's name into "Bob Marley & the Wailers" (after which Blackwell re-named them The Wailers again). 4° Where do you get Blackwell “hated” Peter and Bunny? Undoubtedly the mistrust was mutual but nevertheless in 1976 Island launched and promoted Bunny’s solo career with the album Blackheart Man (and two subsequent albums): not really a sign of rejection, imo. And of course, Tosh also had white mainstream support from the Rolling Stones (ever heard of them, have you?) to push him internationally, in an attempt to become an crossover pop reggae star (after which he quickly went downhill, artistically speaking)... Funny though, how many clueless Tosh fans tend to believe in unfounded allegations and conspiracy theories - a bit like Trump supporters, really… But anyway: whatever.

@@djibinlokoydjo2553 Only thing is, you possibly wouldn't be here saying that if Blackwell/Whitehell hadn't promoted BMW to the extent he did. I have no doubt they all wanted to be successful in the music/entertainment industry. I dont know for sure the reason for the decision to rename/ the band, but I would guess its something to do with the way the industry moguls thought the intended audience would most likely recieve the band according to the times. Record labels did thst kind of thing all the time. They were very focussed on what they see as the best chance of success and financial payoff. As for "whitening" the music and/or the message, well I guess you can't have it both ways - Bob Marley the universal "prophet" versus some sort of perceived purity of the "message". Look, they had something to say but they also wanted to be stars, just like everyone else who walked into a recording studio asking for an audition.
