All the rowboats in the paintings They keep trying to row away And the captains' worried faces Stay contorted and staring at the waves They'll keep hanging in their gold frames For forever, forever and a day All the rowboats in the oil paintings They keep trying to row away, row away Hear them whispering French and German Dutch, Italian, and Latin When no one's looking I catch a sculpture marble, Cold, and soft as satin But the most special are the most lonely God, I pity the violins In glass coffins they keep coughing They've forgotten, forgotten how to sing, how to sing First there's lights out, then there's lock up Masterpieces serving maximum sentences It's their own fault for being timeless There's a price you pay and a consequence All the galleries, the museums Here's your ticket, welcome to the tombs They're just public mausoleums The living dead fill every room But the most special are the most lonely God, I pity the violins In glass coffins they keep coughing They've forgotten, forgotten how to sing They will stay there in their gold frames For forever, forever and a day All the rowboats in the oil paintings They keep trying to row away, row away First there's lights out, then there's lock up Masterpieces serving maximum sentences It's their own fault for being timeless There's a price you pay and a consequence All the galleries, the museums They will stay there forever and a day All the rowboats in the oil paintings They keep trying to row away, row away All the rowboats in the oil paintings They keep trying to row away, row away

This right here is what got me hooked on Regina, a few years before you made this comment. Every song is a story. Even the love songs are stories, without all the details so you can paint your own picture! This one though is the best of them all. ❤️🍍

“All the Rowboats” (2012) finds Regina Spektor singing about someone who wants to release works of art from the museum where they are kept. Spektor said that the “Cheap Seats” title was in her mind before she even knew what the album was going to sound like : “I’ve been in all kind of seats , and everything has its beauty, and that’s sort of the whole point of the world - you always get something and you let go of something, and each thing has its pluses and minuses.” The music video was directed by Adria Petty (Tom Petty’s daughter). About her collaboration with Spektor, she stated : “I’m really careful not to be too liberal with her videos because THE MUSIC HAS SUCH A VOICE. It’s just a matter of being able to move through these spaces with her and go on a trip with her as the narrator, without having it proscribe how you hear the song or digest the lyrics. Like a good book, it should be personal to whoever’s listening to it.” 💛🚣‍♀️💚

Why would you want metal this? Like, not being a dick, I'm genuinely curious. What more do you get out of metal that this doesn't give you? I just can't seem to understand the reason, other than that, possibly, you were bad at making friends, but were taken in by metal heads, and so you like metal, even to the point that you lie to yourself, saying that metal sounds better than this, just so you can tell yourself that you are one of the metal-guys, and in so, feel accepted and valued. I only say that because I happened to have experienced it first hand, and now, at 26, I have found and gathered my tastes, none of which ended up to be metal, in the end. So, why do you both enjoy this, and want a metal version?
@ianciti
@ianciti 9 жыл бұрын
you're right i was bad making friends, but the metal heads didn't take me in, the nerds did, i like metal because i spend a lot of time alone and have spent a lot of time experimenting with metal music and have come to find that i like it more, i found i liked metal whence i came upon Dio whose music i think is really great, if a bit old timey. i would like a metal rendition of this, not to lie and say "yeah i like metal" but because it just genuinely sounds better. it's just my taste

Message: "there is a punishment for being timeless," and the rowboats are trying to get away- like people, trying to escape from the constant criticism of their peers. And the boats and their captains get severe sentences for being timeless- maybe that means that nobody will ever forget them, and that is their punishment.They can never change or continue.

Her songs always inspire a different meaning based on the listener. You can take as literally or symbolically as you would like to, and it still has a strongly resonating meaning. I have yet to hear a song by Regina Spektor that did not inspire me.

that makes since as she says "god i pity the violins" she can relate to all the past dead singers
@zackaclese
@zackaclese 9 жыл бұрын
That's not the line, but you got close to the meaning, if a bit off. It's "Masterpieces serving maximum sentences. It's their own fault for being timeless: there's a price to pay and a consequence". Analytical Artist, that's true of a portion of her songs, but this one is pretty cut and dry. It's just about how when you treasure something highly, you preserve it, and the preservation works a lot like incarceration. So, she thinks these things should be free to live and die, and finds museums sad, and even calls them "mausoleums", implying that everything within them is dead, and preserved. :)

Actually, zack B I've always interpreted the song differently, which leads me to believe that all people will think differently based on who they are. There is no right way to have a song speak to you.

This isn't about the titanic or hitler or whatever's being said. It's about how sad it is that wonderful, genius art- especially instruments, supposed to be used in performance- are locked up in art galleries and museums where only certain people can see them, rather than being open for all the public to see.

When I heard it I imagined a young girl either on the Titanic and looking at all the relics, and the tone of the music sort of set a more drastic edge that made me think of the last minutes the ship spent afloat. I also interpreted it as salvages of the Titanic that became timeless because they were relics. It was more than a boat from what I was going by; it was the talk of the waves, the worried captain: foreigners imagining the devastation, the preserved "living" dead still in the ship.

Wait.. how do you get Titanic from that? I have no idea where you got that information anywhere in the lyrics except for the fact that it says "Boat". It seems to me that it is about timeless art; beautiful pieces that are left unadmired hidden away in museums and not for public view. Although i'd love to hear your interpretation if you could explain it to me.

Greer The Compass Girl It seems there is a relationship between creative genius and madness that may never be fully understood. I was a musician (although I must be careful not to overestimate my abilities) and based my entire way of living around making music and existing within a music community until I decided to get a straight job at age 28. Which is precisely when my troubles with bipolar disorder began. I don’t know, but I surmise, that a true artist must tend themself with great care to maintain the subtle balance between the locus of their creativity, and the madness that could unfold thanks to the tensions between that beautiful mind and the square holes that society seems hellbent on presenting all of us. I can think of no other artist who exceeds Regina’s capacity to dig deep into her uniquely beautiful mind, yet she also seems to maintain a relationship with it that enables her to function within society, and remain happy and sane. Long may she maintain this ability!
