You won't believe a photo I took in 2018. The image is of an old piano embedded into a firewood pile.

A lot of the top comments seem to be interpreting this song as something negative but my own takeaway as someone who, like a lot of these other commenters, has struggled a lot with anxiety, is that this song could be a retelling of the process of overcoming pain and self-doubt; not the overarching process of changing as a person, but the smaller pattern of healing that entails getting so caught up in your own thoughts and then finding one or two, maybe-seemingly-insignificant things to fixate on and stake victoriously as reason enough (or perhaps the first of many reasons) to get you to try and open up again. In my experience, when things are bad, and you feel like everything you focus on makes you feel worse, it’s a normal habit to ignore any signs the outside world is giving you to instead focus on your own negative thoughts, and you end suffocating in your own head because it seems to make more sense at the time. And then, eventually, either by your own ability or through some outside intervention, something shines just a little bit brighter - maybe your comforter’s softer than you realized, maybe a friend or family member says or does something that cheers you up slightly, maybe you see the cover of a book or movie you really enjoy when trying to sift through the mess you made in your anxious state - whatever it is, any thing(s) can be that little reminder why you keep opening yourself up to the world even if it means potentially enduring a terrible pain - because, the truth is, it might just worth a try anyways.

It’s so crazy to me how she could write and perform such a powerful song, and yet the rest of her work doesn’t reflect this same energy.

I’ve worn my jacket far too long, It’s getting shabbier and frailer. And so I take it to a tailor To see if something can be done. I tell him, “Now it’s up to you To remedy the situation. The magic art of alteration Should make my life as good as new.” It was a joke - but he takes on The task with single-minded passion, Bringing my jacket up to fashion As best he can. The funny man. He trims and sews without a word, With such meticulous precision, As if upon a sacred mission To have my happiness restored. He thinks I’ll try the jacket on, And then - the clouds will part above me, And I’ll believe that you still love me… Well, think again. The funny man.

“All the Rowboats” (2012) finds Regina Spektor singing about someone who wants to release works of art from the museum where they are kept. Spektor said that the “Cheap Seats” title was in her mind before she even knew what the album was going to sound like : “I’ve been in all kind of seats , and everything has its beauty, and that’s sort of the whole point of the world - you always get something and you let go of something, and each thing has its pluses and minuses.” The music video was directed by Adria Petty (Tom Petty’s daughter). About her collaboration with Spektor, she stated : “I’m really careful not to be too liberal with her videos because THE MUSIC HAS SUCH A VOICE. It’s just a matter of being able to move through these spaces with her and go on a trip with her as the narrator, without having it proscribe how you hear the song or digest the lyrics. Like a good book, it should be personal to whoever’s listening to it.” 💛🚣‍♀️💚

Here, Regina Spektor sings in a fake Italian accent, addressing a woman who’s concerned that if she gives birth to a son, he will become a serial killer. As she often does, Spektor is portraying a fictional character rather than resorting to real-life events. She stated : “I think it’s silly to assume that songs are from the direct life of the songwriter. Nobody does that with novels. Nobody does that with movies or actors. If George Clooney plays an a-hole who walks around murdering people, nobody thinks that George Clooney is an a-hole who walks around murdering people. Everybody has this understanding that all these other artists are just channeling something and using their imaginations, but for whatever reason, people don’t seem to feel that way about songwriting, I guess.” GOOD POINT, REGINA‼️ One last word… Doesn’t the chorus strike a chord with you❔ Well, it should… since it was borrowed from Nina Simone /The Animals’ “Don’t Let Me Be Misunderstood” (1965)❕💙🎵💚🎬❤️
