Africa generated a total of 19 million tonnes of plastic waste,
of which 17 million tonnes were mismanaged (according to
2015 data). Plastic pollution is on the rise in the region, owing
to a rapid rate of urbanization and growing middle class and
with a recycling rate (municipal solid waste) as low as 4%,
investment into improved infrastructure and robust waste
management systems is required.
While investment into the continent is advancing as our case
examples from Kenya and Nigeria indicate, far more capital is
needed to scale solutions.
This webinar highlighted the opportunities and challenges of
investing in plastics circularity including success stories from
the region and insights on enabling a conducive policy
environment for investment. It will bring together diverse
voices and stakeholders from the private and public sectors to
further understand the interplay, and interdependency,
between the two sectors and the role of policy in catalyzing
private sector investment.
