Here is my introduction to the system of car control - what it is, how it works, and a demonstration on how to apply it to several straightforward hazards.

These videos by Reg are excellent. As an IAM observer for 25 years with Stockport Group I have picked up a lot of tips and commentary phrases very useful for training purposes. A must watch is Reg's one on cornering.

These are excellent videos! I'm a relatively new driver (about 2 years behind the wheel) and am conscious that my driving could be a lot better; the system is something I will be considering next time I'm out on the road. Thanks!

Hi Reg, these videos are great and very interesting, I’ll be sure to keep watching them. My father took the advanced test years ago before I was even born. He has taught me a lot of this since I got my licence in Ontario Canada. However we don’t have the advanced test here, I wish we did! Oh well. Your BMW is in mint condition by the way! Love it!

Hi there Reg. Very informative as always. I took particular note as to how you always tried to maintain momentum, particularly the right hand turn towards the end, where many people would've come to a complete halt, so to speak. Before raising a query I always make sure to look at other comments, just in case the answer lies within. Please take note that I am Autistic (thankfully high functioning) so any query raised is genuine. I noticed that you took what I would refer to as the "racing line" on many of the roundabouts. I'm fine with this in principle but, on the first r/about in your clip (approx 10.49 to 10.57) the Transit (inside lane) - what if that driver had cut across into your lane? Was that driver aware of your presence? Please do NOT take this as criticism of your driving. I am genuinely seeking an answer here. Thanks in advance. Will proceed to the next in this (43) series 👍.

Another brill video, I'm doing my IAM & really struggling with the brake gear separation. 😱
@RegLocal
@RegLocal 9 жыл бұрын
Keep practising Stew - you'll get there! Don't overthink it - just think in terms of keeping both hands on the wheel whilst you're braking (you can't change gear then!) and then aim to get your speed down a little before the hazard, rather than right at the hazard so you've a little time to change gear. I struggled with system at first - almost everybody does if they've been driving for a while.

Hello Reg. Excellent video and a great supplement to "Roadcraft". On approaching a roundabout, the three V's, with the third V, curve, does that mean you consider the radius of the roundabout to give you a clue how fast to approach it (along with the other `V's of course which may be more limiting).

Excellent vid Reg, as are the previous ones too. I'm just going through IAM with Bolton and recognise some of the roads you are using - but some are infamiliar. You do mention A666 in this but can you give a ref or two for other roads used?
@RegLocal
@RegLocal 9 жыл бұрын
Hi Rick, the road used during the introduction is the A682 between Gisburn and Long Preston, the roundabouts are on the A59 near to Whalley and the left turn at the end is near to you (and me!) on the A666 between Darwen and Egerton. In future, I'll list the roads used in the video description.

+Reg Local Sat in a caff in Manchester reading your book. An (ex) M3 driver with a love of North Wales who drives over Rivi? Other than a minor difference in ability - we could have been separated at birth. B4391/A4212 to Bala + M3 CSL my particular poison 👍👍😈 👍👍

Far be it for me to disagree with the wisdom of advanced drivers but I have a problem with what is described as the phase most people get wrong. If I understand correctly I should brake first then change gear. But there may be situations where the speed comes down too low for the gear I am in and I have to change down while braking. What am I doing wrong? (or rather what *was* I doing wrong - I currently drive an automatic and it is quite happy to change down while I am braking).

I won't presume to speak for Reg but my understanding is this: it's preferable to avoid downshifting during braking, and instead dip the clutch as you approach idle. During the whole time you are braking both hands are on the wheel, your foot is on the brake pedal and there is no risk of disturbing the balance of the vehicle as there could be with a gear change. Separating braking and changing gear has another benefit, it anchors your go/no decision point to a single moment: when you reach for the shifter. This encourages people to develop the skill of reading a hazard, and then committing to a course of action. In a way it can help "free you up" to focus on the next one.

Hi Reg, I'm relatively new to advanced driving and wanted to know if heel & toe is still conducive to system? Thanks.
@RegLocal
@RegLocal 9 жыл бұрын
Hi Rob. There isn't a short answer to your question I'm afraid (there never is!). Heel & toe is one way of matching engine speed to road speed when slowing down, but traditional Roadcraft-based advanced driving requires - mostly - avoidance of overlap between braking and changing gear. There is occasionally a place for heel & toe and maybe I'll cover it in a future video.

+Reg Local Thanks for doing this on a Sunday, sir! In short, should I stop doing it on the road?
@RegLocal
@RegLocal 9 жыл бұрын
+Rob Reeves Rob, it's not necessary on the road in most circumstances and if you do it as a matter of course, you're probably leaving your braking a little late. Should you stop doing it? If you're undertaking an advanced driving course, yes you should. If you're just driving for yourself, it's entirely up to you. I'll try to make a short video at the weekend covering this and another couple of questions I've been asked.

Some interesting and important topics, however in many of your videos there is insufficient explanation. Bear in mind that you are taking people from the known to the unkown; from concrete to abstract. Therefore you need to include more information in your verbalisation. Let's hear - by way of commentary - about the environment: speed limits, general weather conditions (eg wind). What is the ad speed and what gear has been selected (and why). When there is a gear change, what gear are to aiming for, and what is the road speed at the point of the gear change. At what stages are you braking/accelerating. At each point there is a change, or anticipated change (of gear, speed) explain why - what is your rationale? Thanks.
