It great to just watch you play. I've just took up the classical guitar at the very young age of 65. I'm hoping to get to grade 8 before my time running out. Lol. Thank you for your inspirational example . Regards.

I'm sure you'll get to grade 8 and beyond. The most important thing, enjoy it!

Good luck to you. I have never bothered with grades except for first few in piano as always underperformed through nervousness. I love the freedom of playing for fun and being able to choose the repertoire I learn. I recently took up the guitar at 43 and am lucky to have guidance from a good teacher and friend in David Cottam. He writes a lot for students: check out his music: lovely pieces that sound more difficult than they are!

Hi John, I started at 61, I am now 65 and working on grade 4. Some random thoughts from one older beginner to another: - Do it because you love it. I just love the feel and tone of the instrument and of course the music. - It is good to aim for grade 8, I do, but there is some stunningly beautiful music in all the grades. - You will sometimes be discouraged, but don't let it stop you playing. Remember the quote from Calvin Coolidge: "Nothing in this world can take the place of persistence. Talent will not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men[people] with talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are omnipotent." - Buy a nice instrument. I accidentally picked up a Ramirez Estudio 3 in a shop once, I didn't think I was buying a guitar when I walked in, but ... the tone and the playability of this guitar get me out of bed early to play it every morning. - Keep practicing the pieces from the previous grade so that you have something to play for people. - Experiment with strings. Try the "Experiment collections" at stringsbymail. - Find a good teacher. I found one about a year ago (Manuel Diewald) and he has made a big difference. If there is no-one local remember that after 2020 many more teachers are willing to give lessons using videoconferencing software. - It will take years. I remember reading that it takes five years to be an intermediate classical guitar player. I am almost there! Good luck, Bill

Great job as usual David. l hope people learning the guitar today will truly appreciate what is so readily available at their fingertips from amazing players and teachers like yourself. Man oh man when l think back over the years, l am sure l did my fair share of wearing the thread's off a good many vinyl records. How much easier it would have been if this were available in my day. Keep up the great work my friend.

Hi David, I’m not sure if I have asked this question, but at what level are the Regondi studies? When do you believe the average student should tackle them?
