Yeah these things are tough as nails. I know the engine is slow and inefficient but it's smooth as silk and since it spins so slow the torque is good and it can go 500k+ and never burn a drop of oil. There's no way these high strung turbocharged motors today will do that sort of thing.
@Rtvoll11 жыл бұрын
Djonkie Bonk Exactly. People like to joke but these old v8 car will outlast most modern cars.
@ihateu197911 жыл бұрын
Djonkie Bonk No turbo engine would do that huh? Guess you never heard of the 2JZ, and realistically, who is comparing tubo to NA anyways, only you! Looks like your desperately grasping at anything to prove your own beliefs to in this failure to others... Yah, turbos must be so unreliable that our whole transportation fleet of super high mileage semi trucks in the US (and elsewhere) must have gotten something wrong....
@IKhanNot11 жыл бұрын
Neal Lehman Yeah leave it to somebody to get their panties in a wad. I meant modern day tiny high strung motors. The 2JZ is probably one of the best and smoothest in the industry. Turbo diesels are bulletproof reliable. I meant the newest direct injection motors that run at a high temperature and are putting out tons of HP per liter. You supposedly save money on gas but those savings will go to cleaning out intake valves of carbon every 40k and the turbo components on those will not last as long as long as engines of yore. I was referring to gas motors, not diesels.
@TheTalman111 жыл бұрын
Djonkie Bonk in all honesty they aren't all that ineffecient, horsepower wise sure they're putting out larger numbers today but mpg? compare cars in its weight class today and there's not much of a difference and most of that is in the new 6-8 speed transmissions 1992 caprice 5.7l is rated 17city/25highway 2013 impala gets 18city/31highway with a 6speed tranny and waying in at 700-1000lbs less

The Caprice is a potentially awesome sleeper. You need to put in an LT1 (if it doesn't have one already), a T56 transmission and the suspension, brakes, limited slip differential and engine cooling from the Impala SS. And off you go.
@Jack_Stafford Жыл бұрын
That's the "donkification" he was talking about. You forgot to mention the ugly 22 inch steam roller tires. Ugh. Doing that completely defeats and trailer-parks the entire point of this car. It's not supposed to be a fast race car. It's supposed to be a big, comfortable quiet, but also reasonably powerful cruiser, with the comfort designed for well to do middle class retirees who want and deserve the kind of car they admired their whole lives but who couldn't afford a Fleetwood or Town Car. Just buy and trash up an old Camaro or something instead, and don't ruin the essential characteristics of a land yacht like this and save it for people who actually like it for what it is and aren't trying to turn it into a whiter-trash Vette with room for 6 and all of their kids and a meth lab in the trunk.

I live in the Midwest US, I inherited my parents 91, still looks great with maroon paint and grey interior, and there siply isn't anything build since the B bodied that comes CLOSE to the comfort an smooth ride of these cars. It's over 100,000, but drives and looks better than a flimsy front wheel drive car with 50,000. These cars were BUILT to last. Forever. The most expensive Lexus and Benz? Not even close. And neither of those cars get the compliments and approving looks nearly as much ,either. Everyone wants to buy it, too. From old white men to young black thugs, I've been offered cash at cash stations. GM , you should listen, there absolutely IS a market for big, comfortable REASONBLY PRICED large cars. I have zero interest in driving a troop carrier that seats 8, requires a step ladder and the visibility of a tank's mail slot, and requires a mortgage to fill the tank., and loud, droning knobby off road tires. I don't ever plan to drive on anything other than smooth pavement. Helsinki ? Wow, I bet they are even more admired there!

And it's questionable whether it should be on the road on safety grounds, that amount of rust is bound to have compromised the structure of the car making it much more likely to collapse in an uncontrolled manner in an impact. They didn't make the Impala SS until 94 and they only made them through 96. The 93 and earlier were nowhere near as good as the later ones. Great cars, freaking reliable, decent mileage, and built like tanks. They're still a tiny bit scary, even now, when you have that visceral fear of the law as you see one approaching you from behind.
@jshdwhite7910 жыл бұрын
I think it's worth mentioning, that era Caprice is still the most popular car for law enforcement, ever. The later LT1 Caprice's were actually refurbished by some law enforcement agencies, because by the early 2000's everything else on the law enforcement market was front drive garbage... Except for the crown vic, that was rear wheel drive garbage.

I worked in a Lincoln-Mercury dealer in South Florida in 92-93. Our assistant sales manager had been in the business for about 25 years he said in the first 24 months of this body style he took more Chevys in trade than he had in the the previous 24 years, not saying a per month or per year figure but total cars. At one point we had 8 of these setting on the used car lot for more than 6 months, of course some of those were self inflected. Did you know if you book a Caprice as if it where a Caprice Classic you're in too deep and it won't go away.....ever, probably still there sitting in the back row.
