Built for nuclear families, adopted by hipsters, and raced by enthusiasts, The Volvo 240 is the Unreal Tournament of the automotive world: forever being rebuilt and re-purposed. MEAT! You've earned THE MEAT!
I wrote the George McGovern joke with Dan Neil in mind. There was this one moment on "The Car Show" where he made this T.S. Elliot reference and the automotive world needs more literary references.
All content in this video is original. The opening song is performed by us, the creators of Regular Car Reviews. We own all rights and contents to this video.

Try this is you have a 5-10 year old child around: hand them a pen and a piece of paper and ask them to draw "a car". What you will probably end up with is something that looks eerily similar to a 240.

I own four 240's. And one of them is the Turbo. Best damn cars ever built. Perfect rwd cars that never breake. Nothing beats sliding around in them during winter in fresh snow. And you'll get 3-400 horses out of it without a problem. The 240 and the 740 is the most popular youth cars here in Sweden, perfect for fun and easy to work on. And I think they look really good.

WowzaBoyz Sure but the very popular 535 shifter from BMW's e34 series is cheap, pretty easy to put in and very reliable up to 450-500 hp. I have that box in two of my cars, 230hp and 380hp and neither have any problems. I did one my self ( re-cuttng some stuff and welding etc) and the other one was done by a shop up here that does swaps like that every day almost. And there is plenty of conversion kits sold in shops up here with the needed stuff. Fixing up Volvos is popular here. We know the tricks.

Smirenka knobheads quibble over the difference? They do the EXACT opposite of each other lol, its not quibbling it’s using the correct terminology... In the mechanical/power engineering field we never refer to a vehicles engine as a “motor.” A motor is electric, and consumes energy to, say, spin a impeller shaft to turn a fan on something like the induction system on a industrial boiler, or create static pressure through a air handler... a engine combusts fuel to generate energy... like a engines energy is used to turn a transmission to move a car forward, or a generator uses a engine to create electricity to run things when the main power supply is disconnected...

Aren't the aerodynamics interesting? Without any part of the body moving, the whole car sinks about an inch and a half as you pass the 100 mph mark. North of 100 they are so perfectly stable. I run H rated Michelin Defender tires, size 205/65R15 on Virgo wheels for summer. Winter they are Uniroyal Tiger Paw Ice and Snow in a 195/75R14 on the factory steel wheels. Heading into winter number 33, Arthur has never been stuck.

Volvo's are cool, but hipsters are not. They are cool for the same reason Grand National's are. They have an amazing history. Also the Volvo club's are some of the best out there. They attempt things you would never think they would. Example, I saw a 240 I think it was with a 2014 Viper engine with 1000hp. You can find it on youtube, and if you google it.

Old RWD Volvos typically have incredibly soft engine mounts, they are designed as a safety item so the motor just falls down into the cradle during an accident instead of pushing into the passenger compartment. It means they wear out all the time though. My 940SE went through set after set, but it always moved around just like that.

But, I just gotta say on the Volvo 240's defense. I had a 1993 240. They're a brilliant car, especially from the (son of a) mechanic's point of view. Simple, reliable, easy to fix, bulletproof, economical, and (in the right colour) a regal, dignified looking thing, with so many convenient features, for the time. And, no, I'm not a hipster. I'm an ex-military, full-time employed, drug avoiding, sport playing, Harley riding Aussie bogan. Pretty much the opposite of a hipster...

Regardless, i LOVE the car..Yes, acceleration isn't great BUT at 65-80 mph i'm going as fast as any other car on the road..It's built with a steel cage...more sturdy than most cars..Low life individuals have taken off some chrome and tried to pry off the front grill..I'm keeping it for life. It's a novelty which runs very, very well. Thanks and have a great/safe riding experience whichever car you drive.

I get this video is funny....but this guys knows nothing about the 240. Myself, im more of a 740 man....but the things that make it great came from the 240. First import with a cat. A 240 can withstand 10 more 240's stacked on its roof. The NA versions are slow, but have enough torque to play around with. The Turbo versions are much more fun. And they are as reliable as can be. I have owned 2 240s, and 5 740s. All cost between $500 and $1500. All I drove (harshly) for about a year. Most of them I sold for more than I had paid for them. All were over 15 years old when I owned them and had over 200k miles. I never had an engine, trans or driveline part fail. My wife drove them to school for 5 years (in maine) never once breaking down or getting stuck in the snow. I will take a 740 over most of the modern, over priced, over complicated, poorly assembled, and built with low quality material cars that are on the market today. It is a shame that modern Volvos fit into that group and have lost what made the 200 and 700 series Volvos so great.

Back then, Volvo cared about quality and design above all else. Today, most car makers just care about flashy stuff to get you to buy the car. You can get a mini van with 4 TV's, but its engine will start giving you problems after 100k miles. A friend of mine had a dodge caliber...one year it cost $500 to fix the front end to pass inspection...the next year it was $800 and the last year it was $1300. that was when he decided to trade it in. The car only had 110k miles!

go to Norway or sweden and you will see that the way people see 240's 740's and 940's or just all the good 40's. are a rather different way. a lot of people like them. and nobody will denie you it is a good car. cheep to fix. safe t odrive. still enough power to play around with. but it drinks a lot of gasoline.

Trym GK "a lot of gas" compared to what :P my 740 was running at 8L/100KM, so does my 940 Turbo, and my parents 964/V90 both are running at around 9-10L/100KM. I know that its common in the Nordics for people to think old Volvos are thirsty, but when i compare it to a Mondeo, a Galant or a Audi from the 90s its exactly the same.

I remember seeing an older Volvo like this pull into the parking lot at the Pep Boys I work at. I remember just marveling and admiring the sheer size and surface area of its headlights. I remember telling my coworker Chris how I read that making headlights plain larger without making the bulbs brighter puts more light on the road or something like that and then making him laugh his ass off by saying "that dude must see everything on the road, he can see into tomorrow night!" I miss Chris.

just drive it , and see what it can give to you there is no match to this car - it's slow but strong it can pool another three cars behind with rope it with 120 mph - regular shape but very safe it can take falling down from 10 meter upside down on roof top with full load with light injury ( seat belt taken ) - and until this moment it's record the most oldest car still driven on the road - so they honest when they say ( Volvo for life ) - it's well protect you and stay with you - - we have a Volvo , so i experience what i say .

No, you're thinking of one very special P1800, not a 240. And for that matter, Volvo's aren't really that brilliant. Yes, they have safety but then they aren't alone anymore, and haven't been for years. Saab and Subaru were first and just brought the tide that's swept Volvo under. Without that claim to fame their cars are what they are, boring. They don't have the extra technological innovation Saab had, they don't have the affordability and/or rally prestige of Subaru, and otherwise their pricing puts them square into BMW territory. I'm no BMW fanboy, but save possibly the XC90 there is no Volvo I'd take over its equivalent BMW, and even there that's only because the X5 is just the worst excuse at an SUV. Unfortunately for Volvo, they're a car maker whose Ace in the hole has been thoroughly trumped. If they don't find some passion, some excitement, or sophistication soon, I see them at least in the North American market as going the way of Saab.

benjamin reynolds A car that doesn't even yet actually exist, and is no real guarantee of success. Now I will say the previous V60 R was just gorgeous, the sedan was attractive but the wagon was phenomenal. It still looks good and if you want an STi wagon without the attachment to the sadly declining standard of Subaru owners it's a tempting choice. But even there it's a lucky, blind squirrel getting the nut sort of victory. The sedan is a failure, it was second if not third fiddle to the M3 from the day it came out, and the wagon only really succeeds because it looks great and because the M3 doesn't have an estate variant. Honestly, I like Volvo, I really do. I like how their owners picked something unusual and different. They could have just had a Honda but didn't, BECAUSE VOLVO! But really Volvo is in a time of crisis as far as I can see. While they share Saab and Subaru's favor with the old money that lets them play with the big names, Volvo's real claim to fame is gone. They were the safest thing going for a long time, but the industry's caught up and now cheaper cars are doing as well in the crash tests. And without that they have to turn to style, value, or performance. They aren't cheap so value's out the window, they are far from ugly but aren't really stunning in most cases so style's a moot point there. And performance, they've had tons of turbocharged production cars and the utterly gorgeous P1800 but they don't really have a phenomenal driver's car, nothing to compete with the M's and AMG's. If they don't find something soon, I fear Volvo's going to be on a slow descent in obscurity...

inudude15 I know where you are coming from regarding present-day Volvo and I have had many of the same thoughts. I think what you are seeing is their retreat from the North American market to focus on China, where their name is regarded as more equal to other Euro brands (at least so far as I understand). I had heard a rumour that they were planning on going upmarket, which would totally kill them in North America. So far, this hasn't happened, so we'll see about that. Where they still stand out is in offering wagons, but that is a small slice of the pie (unfortunately). I think they do still offer some more safety features than others, but this is all pretty moot by this point as all manufacturers aren't far off one another. They've also dropped some entry models, which is hardly a way to get more people in the dealerships.

My mom owned a mid-70's model back when I was a young person learning to drive in the late 70's. It was a square blue thing with a 4-speed manual and a lever on the steering column to flip it into overdrive. The clutch was a bit fussy, resulting in much chirping and hopping from a stop. Somehow my sister or I managed to pull the thing right out of the floor while Mom and Dad were away on vacation. We just poked it back in the hole and kept driving, even though we lost a few gears. We thought we were in big trouble, but Dad fixed it by putting the pin back in that held the shifter in place. Good as new!

Isnt the Volvo 240 one of the 'tanks' that last forever? Never rusts, outside of the rust-belt states, and always starts? I mean its made of thick metal, you can get hit by most any car made today, and THAT car will crack like an egg, and THIS car wont get a ding in it. Right? Whats wrong with this car? I always thought it was THE used car everyone wanted to buy. Because it IS a tank, one of the last Volvos that ran forever....right?

My family had a string of these. We bought the first one, a 1979 sedan, for $700 as a 2-year car. It lasted 8, and would have gone for more had we not used parts of it in the 1984 wagon we bought for $450. With 450,000km on the clock. There were two of the fancier sedans in the middle of those two cars:, both bought for $300, both short-lived. I now own a 1987 wagon. That I bought for $400. That rattly engine sound brings back good memories of long road trips, every time. Most of our Volvos broke from time to time, but the good ones never broke anything important. Those two fancy sedans in the middle (ooo, power windows, and a ...crank sunroof?) died from: 1. A rusted out shock tower and 2. Gasket failure on the road. But I have enough fond memories of these tough cars that I was still willing to gamble on a wagon cheaper than any of the repairs it needs.

Fun fact, the only V8 that you could legally put in a Volvo 240 was a tiny Rover engine and this was the one Volvo wanted you to use. Chevy V8s where never legal but people tricked the ''vegvesen'' into thinking it was legal. In 2014 Volvo only pointed out that the Chevy engines where illegal because of way too much power and torque :)

the volvos that had the b23 engine like between mid 70S to mid 90S can easily do 500 000 kilometer or miles with not so much maintenance ...it put all makes to shame in my opinion .. they were not affordable ,,,there between affordable and expensive so not many experienced it in other words my dads 1990 volvo with nearly 500 000 miles (thats in a country were peak summer averages between 58 and 60 Celsius in kuwait) and its beating the crap out my new 2011 volvo s80 T6 im having troubles with its electronics at 90000 kilometer the aftermarket is still making parts for the old engine ones mine has nothing but expensive OEM parts mostly if i find one ill buy it without hesitation why the new ones are generaly bad ?....ford components got involved (it has Fomoco label all over it) wait a minute...volvo...involved....kinda close...

Faisal Abdulaziz Not exactly what I asked... but if you're saying it's reliable, Mr. Regular discounts that sentiment in the video. There are plenty of cars from all makes that have hundreds of thousands of miles, It's not as much about the quality of the car as the quality and frequency of the maintenance by the owners. Not to mention for every 500,000 mile Volvo 240 there must be thousands that were put out to pasture with less.

umm. here is what we spent on our volvo 1990 1 - belts 2 - fluids + filters (engine and transmission) 3 - bulbs anything else is orginal even the Air conditioner system is original sunroof works..radio power widnows mechanism starting to slow down but open and closes fully with other brands sure you can go to to 500 000 miles but not without a rebuilt transmission + engine , air conditioner components , fuel pump if not PUMPS...electrical problems ,water pumps you name it we had a toyota pickup...and at 400 000 kilometer it started to show problems ? despite the fact that the Toyota went to the dealership more often...Meticulously serviced were talking about torquing bolts to spec here even lug nuts are torque to spec.. no one insist on service procedures as much as i do in my family ....i mean google the word maintenance and you probably find my photo next to it...LOL im telling you if i wasnt too young to look after my dads volvo from the start it would probably out last him these volvos with mechanical fuel injection or carbs are just something else.... you want another overly built car ? www.ebay.com/gds/1980s-Mercedes-Diesel-679-200-Miles-GOING-STRONG-/10000000003602287/g.html this.... truck like longevity...good luck finding something like that now

Faisal Abdulaziz Okay dude, Many makes have good cars that last, Saying Volvo 240s are the only car that don't break is awfully ignorant. What about Honda Gold Wings? There's plenty of million mile GWs out there with nothing but routine maintenance performed, because they're designed to do so. 240s were designed during the cold war and for being the only car families can afford for a long while, hence the reliability. Stop trying to sell me on the Volvo 240.

I'll try to bring some perspective to this. Some people around here in sweden feel the volvo 240 is part of our national heritage, so insulting the 240 is basically insulting the entire nation to them. The cars do have a reputation of lasting much longer than other cars around here, partly due to them being one of few cars that are adequately rust-proofed for swedish roads which are heavily salted during winter. They are used a lot as beater cars; a lot of people had a 240 as their first car so it's sort of a sentimental subject. They also have a godly heater, which is a big plus in a nordic country. I don't see why some americans are defending the 240 though. I mean you guys only drive automatics and all auto 240s I've driven have been boring as shit. Even around here people are practically paying to get rid of automatic Volvos.
