Most "youngsters" learn to drive on either a bland Driver's Ed sedan, their parent's crossover SUV, or their buddy's old Honda Civic if they want to learn to drive a manual. Getting a S197 is like picking up a .357 Magnum thinking you'll master it the same as you did with a M&P 22.

The year was 2003 and I had just gotten my driver's license. I was heading home from a friend's house in my mom's hand-me-down 1993 Toyota Previa and it was a gorgeous, windows down kind of day. First in line at a red light and a guy in a black SN95 in the left turn lane was revving his engine and doing stationary burnouts while waiting for the light to change. Needless to say, by the time he got the green arrow, he had the attention of EVERYBODY at that intersection. Sure enough, he pinned it wide open, overcooked the turn, lost the back end and slammed left wheel first into the center divider. The person in the car next to me also had their windows down and watched the whole thing and we shared a mutual laugh at this person's expense. Somehow the driver of the Mustang managed to not break anything, backed away from the divider and did the most pathetic, defeated, low speed escape I've ever seen. So there's proof that this sort of thing is not new....

@@lsh3rd Dumb kids look for a cheap car that their grandma doesn't drive, find the mustang, spend all their money on it, run tires that were already done 8 years ago cuz they can't afford new ones, slam the gas coming off a FWD drive car in a curve, and off they go into the curb. I drove a 01 for over 10 years in Canada. I'm not even a good driver, but if it can drive just fine in deep snow, ice, and soaked roads from all of it melting, and the shitty Canadian roads which are basically all pothole, it's 100% driver error. I think they would actually crash less if they learned on one, because they'd start off more cautious and actually learn the car before they get confident. But since most will probably drive their parents cars for a few years before buying their own, they go hard and confident, before figuring out it's RWD and not a Hyundai Accent.

These cars are a ton of fun but it isn't because it handles the best or accelerates the fastest. There's just something about hammering down on the throttle and the rear end kicking out ever so slightly and the chassis bucking (in a good way) that makes you feel like you're driving something that's just more analog than it is. But the 05-09 S197s just seem to never age that bad to me, I look at mine and just adore its looks even though its 13 years old. And is still in fairly nice condition considering its lived as a outside and daily life for the nearly 5 years I've owned it. It's got some paint fade on its bumpers(A common issue with those years), Scratches and a few dents from seeing actual road use and multiple road trips, and Very Cracked Glass roof Panel thanks to some psycho Vet dude who hated my out of state plate and now currently a botched clutch job. @@Valks-22 yeah I’m german and I’m just baffled by that way of thinking. It boarders on American decadence.. (btw something like this or a Polo 6n with 60hp is the absolut norm for 18 year old germans and not just people from low income homes) That thing made 50hp and rattled like an old Diesel because the 3 cylinder was so imbalanced. After 5 years I bought a Skoda Oktavia wagon with the 1.6 Liter 4 cylinder that produces 101hp. Man I felt like I finally stepped up into being a „man“ because 100hp really was considered something good! After that I bought a BMW 330 with the 3.0 liter straight six and 231hp. Everyone told me how insanely much that is and that nobody will ever need that much power for driving around regular roads (which of course includes the Autobahn in Germany). Thinking about 18 year olds having that much power is just insane! How did a society got carried away so much that this is considered totally normal? Especially in a country where it’s prohibited to drive fast and if you do, you face draconian measures if you’re caught. Again, I can’t find any other words but „excess“ and „decadence“ for such kind of behavior. Nonetheless I’m an absolute sucker for american muscle cars, but not as childs toys!

@@rolux4853 : As a Pennsylvania native - Don't worry, most 16-18 years aren't driving around what he was describing. Also, something else he isn't talking about : Nobody is driving Fiesta STs or Focus RSes because you can't get them with automatic transmissions. The "take rate" (as the industry groups call it) of manual trans cars in the U.S. is like 2-3% at the absolute most. In the U.S., neither teens nor adults can even operate a car with a manual transmission for the most part, let alone own something like a Fiesta ST or RS. The new autos with big power numbers in high-volume are now mostly in pickup trucks (which almost none of them can be had with a manual now) and premium trim crossovers The people with the Scat Pack Challengers and Mustang Mach 1's are either : Dudes in their 20's that are leasing them and/or taking an insane-o financing plan along with the soul crushing insurance costs for somebody driving a muscle car that's under 25 years old, or older men in their 40's and up that could probably write a check for the car if they wanted to. I worked for public school systems until about 2 years ago (18 years altogether in that world), and in most high school student parking lots you saw hand-me-down crossovers, sedans, and the like. Only the rich kids had new cars, and even then they were usually Lexus, Acura, and occasional BMW/Merc's with the bottom tier engines (because they didn't want their kids to stuff the car into a tree) Mr. R spends a lot of his time in the section of Pennsylvania known as Berks County. 2010 data puts the median income of a household around $55,000.00 USD/year. A 2021 Mustang GT brand new is in the low 30's... so yea, nobody's parents are buying those new for themselves, let alone their kids I still like Mr. R's stuff, but he's 100% into the world of the automotive journalist echo chamber. Mustangs crash because Ford's idea of sports car suspension is Cadillac levels of softness and under damping. And they choose not to over gear 1st unlike other big engine sports cars, so it will happily break traction in 1st and to some degree 2nd with just throttle. The soft setup and lack of damping means the car terribly, terribly controls its weight and inertia. Newer ones have gotten better, but it's the fundamental way Ford builds the Mustang. I've driven and raced everything from a Civic to a Viper. The Mustang is the most dangerous car I've driven. I want to repeat that. The Mustang is the most dangerous car I've driven. It can be driven hard. It can be driven well. But it has to be driven with care and deliberate choice. If you want it to behave, you have to know how physics works and know how to handle the car. You have to understand this stuff to understand what to do and not do. Or you'll just spin out and crash or something. At an autocross event I was riding along with a fellow with a brand new Mustang (last gen) he owned for all of two weeks. His first lap he started sliding and put two tires in the grass. His second lap he spun it completely 180 around through an S. I hop into the driver's seat and do a couple laps. I'll say one thing. It's probably the funnest car I've driven, in the stupid fun kind of way. You launch and spin the tires through the first couple gears with no real effort. There's enough communication to drive it ok near the limit and even drift a little bit if you want (the handling is neutral enough to let you do it). But holy cow is the thing just softly sprung and has no damping to control the body. This car had the upgraded "track pack" too, so it was the stiff suspension setup. It was still ridiculously soft. You had to manage the back end all the time and be very deliberate with steering inputs and not be fast about it either. Everything you did with the car was about chassis control, aka you controlling the chassis motion because the suspension wouldn't. It's pretty stupid to release a car like this. The thing is so easy to crash if you don't know anything.

Mustangs got famous for mowing down crowds back with the fox body which carried over to the SN95. Old budget platform that was tasked to do too many things on all ends of the auto spectrum from pony car to sedan commuter, people would end up doubling the output they came with and be surprised when it wasn't able to handle it. You can have any mouth breather smoking tires in a front wheel drive car and most of the time nothing crazy will happen. But in the mustang, there not used to a rear wheel drive car, that has a limited slip, and can smoke tires through 1,2, and even 3. Combine that with a very low price to play and you got a machine that loves to hit crowed of people.

Yes the solid rear axle and the soft suspension doesn't help...but it is a good teacher when it comes to rear wheel drive, all aids off driver's car.

Mr. Regular, I recently picked up a 2014 S197 GT recently and asked the same question. I realized the car is absolutely easy to control (traction control/AdvanceTrac is a joke). Burnouts, drifts, etc... are really easy to control, so how to people wind these up in crowds? I think I've come to the conclusion they don't practice proper throttle control. (I also ride a Yamaha R6, which I feel has disciplined my throttle inputs) Once the tires are spinning, there is enough torque to keep them spinning with minimal throttle input, but everyone seems to just go full throttle and turn into the crowd monster they're known to be. Great vid.

STi and S197 owner here - accurate. The S197 has all the torque, instantly. As soon as that clutch pedal is out, you’re just handed the power and the car is like “Here’s what you asked for - good luck!” Also that torque and exhaust note, it just begs you to drive like an idiot. But the real issue is turning. The car is unforgiving. You make a right turn from a stop and try to give it too much throttle, that back end is going to try to pass you. Pull out in to traffic on a busy road - you know you have the power to do it, but if you use that power too soon, it bites you. Most other cars you can just gun it and turn and nothing very special happens. Maybe a little fwd wheel spin. The C6 is a scalpel. Faster, more balanced. The S197 is a broad sword. Once swinging, it’s gonna swing!

I'll never understand why people wreck them, especially compared to a camaro or Mopar. You can take a kid put them in a catfish camaro and tell them to launch it and they will almost certainly lose it. Put them in a new edge and it almost drives itself. Comparatively they're insanely easier to screw around in. The fact is their cheaper and people just can't drive no matter what their in.

The 4.6 S197 is not in any way comparable to a C6 corvette. Maybe once you hit the coyote gen in 2011 yes in regards to the feel you get from it. Lastly everything you’re saying, yes is true in regards to why people crash Mustangs. But the biggest reason is simple the tires kids and adults alike use are trash. Most are using summer only tires not knowing or understanding you can’t or shouldn’t use them in cold weather and have zero grip and the other group is just using cheap tires. My advice is buy a set of summer and a set of quality all seasons.

IMO, the traction control on the S197 makes it worse. It cuts power when you're out of shape and going the wrong direction, making it harder to change that situation. Now I drive with it off, which lets you give it some throttle to transfer weight to the rear wheels. If that doesn't happen, the back end keeps sliding right, and your nose points ever more toward oncoming traffic and responds less to corrective steering even as you need it more and more. With TCS off, I can make a left, poke the gas just a little more than halfway through, just as I start straightening out. This slides the back end to parallel the road just as you straighten out the front. Been doing that for years with my '06 GT and it always works predictably and flawlessly. UNLESS TCS is on...

The S197 line V6 open diff or nodded 8.8 lsd is a mechanized system. Experience and practice are the only things that will grant you control. But... That's because Ford went old school mechanical. That's a breath of fresh air for enthusiasts who plan to mod. But for a beginner... The fly-by-wire throttle delay and mechanical reactions are overwhelming for younger generations. That's OUR fault though. We didn't teach younger enthusiasts the power and importance of mechanical response. The V6 has a reinforced lower end FOR modification. It's durable and balanced... And directly tied to throttle and gas. We need to teach the importance of action vs. Reaction.
