Short answer: Mustangs get wrecked because their owners can't handle the power. Long answer: Any rear wheel drive car with a decent amount of HP requires a bit of skill to launch properly. Even doing a rolling launch requires some skill. Mustangs are crashed more frequently because THERE ARE A LOT MORE MUSTANGS IN CIRCULATION THAN ANYTHING ELSE. Mustangs have been in production since 1964, and have been made EVERY YEAR since. Challengers, Chargers, and Camaros have had long periods of time where they weren't being manufactured, meaning there aren't quite as many to crash, and they do in fact get wrecked often. All for the same reason: high performance car, low performance driver. Most unskilled drivers also don't know how to react when they start to lose control. They either panic and slam on their brakes, or gun it hoping they'll straighten out. Protip: when you start to lose control, TAKE YOUR FOOT OFF THE GAS AND STEER. DO NOT JERK THE STEERING WHEEL. Cutting off the power can prevent you from losing control. That's how "traction control" works. Except taking your foot off the gas cuts off 90% of the power. Traction control cuts much less than that.
@MeynMotorGroup2 жыл бұрын
I def agree with you and you made some excellent points. I still maintain rivals out of the box at least offer a better grasp of what the rear end is doing to correct it. But like you mentioned, if you’re completely oblivious to those warning signs and crash anyways then there’s no help. Also Challenger has its Charger twin so they def sold a lot of units since 08 nearly 6 figures a year each in certain years

That pro-tip is a life saver right there. It has saved my ass on aggressive turns many of times. When the tail steps out on the street it is so discomforting. But like you said letting off the throttle puts your right back in control. It should be in the first page if the driver manual.

This is all simple engineering physics. 1) They defeat the traction on rough pavement when they install stuff like stop the hop kits and tighter sway bars 2) They defeat traction on wet or rough pavement by turning off TC and ASC 3) They defeat traction on wet or rough pavement by over accelerating on cold summer extreme tires. 4) They defeat traction on wet or rough pavement by over accelerating on cheap ass stock or old tires. 5) When they do get out of alignment, they defeat the system by continuing to accelerate. 6) When they do get out of alignment, they defeat the system by over correcting back and forth. 7) Upon completing check list 1 - 6, they say "fck it" and go full send to the floor. Signed owner of 10 mustangs including a GT 500 with 3.73s and a full Steeda packaged model (everything on their #20 race car except the super charger).... 8) After completing steps 1-7 everyone asks: "Why did that happen"? Mustangs have a larger aftermarket than either a scat pack or a Camaro (though they both are good) and the aftermarket plus lack of skill adds to the problems. Don't take my word for how after market suspension mods make a car have LESS traction on real streets... go over and watch Jason on Engineering Explained channel. He has a video on just about every suspension mod there is). These mods help on a smooth prepped track with proper sticky tires...they make the car worse on rough or wet pavement with regular summer or high performance all seasons). Magna ride and or the Steeda adjustable shocks still don't overcome the issues though they may give you a SLIGHTLY more agile suspension on rough pavement at the soft settings..it isn't much. Also my GT 500 with 3.73s and the and the OEM super sports tires + Roush pulley/tune and exhaust was WAY WAY WAY worse than any of my GTs. (It was an 11 rated at around 620hp/620tq w mods.). Lots of disagreement here, though I do agree the Mach 1 is a peach. FWIW (for context), in addition to having owned about 10 mustangs I have also owned the Lexus RCF, a 17 corvette stingray, Audi S7, 370z Sport tech, Rx8, and more (no Camaros of Challengers though). Yes a corvette, 370Z and Audi S class etc all models handle better than mustangs. But it isn't some giant deficit, it is merely an incremental deficit that one can easily deal with by utilizing just a modicum of both self control and common sense when behind the wheel. I have no doubt that a Z28 or an SS 1LE probably out handle a standard mustang, but don't forget the PP2 mustangs that counter those. The RCF with TVS was handful in sport mode though (in a good way)...and the GT500 was a car that wanted you spun around backwards at every moment you were behind the wheel (and even it wasn't hard to handle with both wheels smoking if you knew what you were doing) The 11 GT500 SVT's 1st gear was WAY TOO SHORT for its tq and its OEM tires never seemed to be hot enough to grip but its ACS performed beautifully to never let you get more than about 10 degrees off center even with smoking the tires so much you cant see the car right behind you..... If you want to do some hoonin on city streets...the OEM suspension in its softer settings will s pend more time actually ON the pavement (rather than bouncing up in the air because it so hard and non-pliable). On my 21 I just run it stock, no magna ride but I did get the OEM 265x20 wheels. I am fully confident in its ability to do a proper burnout or turn a short drift...with the TC and ASC on and a driver paying attention..... You just have to let off of it a bit earlier than your "2 fast 2 furious" training tells you and if she starts to surprise you all that is needed is to release the throttle, counter steer very mildly but don't over correct and let it come back in line by itself (and it will 99.9% of the time without any drama). If needed don't slam the brakes but you can gently rest your foot on some light application as well. The one place a mustang will get you is in a deep water hydroplane situation if you are running really wide tires that don't have great channels...though that issue isn't unique to just mustangs either (The RX8s and corvettes are so light they are practically death traps in deep water...and ive no doubt the heavy challenger is the better rain car). By the way....cars like the 370z and BRZ, STI (RIP) and miatia are what I recommend to novices.... (and my sons) even the SC John Works Mini and GTI etc. Those are cars that handle, are fun to drive and that won't be easy to wreck if you just mindless go full send....in fact, being able to go full send every day without having to use self control to driver mod into the vehicles limitations IS legit fun and less stressful....though you always be looking at pony and muscle car tail lights....it's Hella fun.

You forgot to mention some key things. Most Mustangs have a Trac-Loc differential which is far inferior to a Torsen differential which is only available in a few models. It is not predictable at all. In the 2011's & up the advancetrac/traction control system can turn itself back on even if turned off which can throw the car sideways. The suspensions on almost all Mustangs are lacking & need upgrading.

I have the exact opposite experience with my 2022 Mach 1. This is one of the best handling cars I have ever driven, and the best I've owned. Recently surpassing 6k miles (half of that has been on track at Mid Ohio) I couldn't be happier with my Mach. Before purchasing the Mach 1 I rented from the Hertz adrenaline collection The Mustang GT, Camaro SS and Challenger R/T each for a week. The Mustang came out on top, the Camaro second and the Challenger 3rd. I was the least impressed with the Challenger for lack of power and handling. While I love the look of the Challenger is seemed to be lipstick on a pig. Recently I had the opportunity to drive another rental Mustang GT, and compared to the Mach 1 which I've been driving for about a year now that rental and its skinny tires seemed pretty sketchy. Just tires alone can make a major difference. What ever the rental GT had for tires was barely enough and if you tried to toss it around a bit you had better stay on top of it. For the Mach I have 2 sets of HP wheels, one set of Michelin Sport 4s and the other set had Cup 2's. The Sport 4s are great and work well as a dual purpose street/track tire, but the Cup 2's are on another level. The feel of the Michelin Cup 2 tires is amazing and really connects the car to the road like no other tire I've owned or tested. Now that the Cup 2's have been used up from about 8 hours of aggressive track use I have replaced them with Falken RT660's for autocross. The Falkens don't have the amazing feel of the Cup 2's, they feel more like the Sport 4s, but they will heat up faster for autocross and should grip better than the 4s. All the tires I am talking about are on Mach 1 HP wheels (staggered setup 19x10.5 front and 19x11 rears) Tire sizes for the Michelin Sport Cup 2, Michelin Sports 4s, and Falken Advan RT660 are 305/30/19 front and 315/30/19 rear on those HP wheels. If you have any doubts check out the videos of me on Track at Mid Ohio on my channel. I can see how an inexperienced driver can quickly get into trouble with a moderate amount of horsepower and shitty tires regardless of the platform driven.

I just bought a 2014 V6 3.5L... as someone who has raced, I'd make the guess it's the rear wheel drive, and people can't handle the power coming from the back end. I've seen so many Mustangs do the same thing, starting back in the 90's models. I've always thought it was because they are so light in the back. One of the police departments where I lived actually sold off all their Mustangs and replaced them with Camaros due to the handling difference. They had a few incidents with the Mustangs losing control and even some rolling over, they had no problems with the Camaro, which was a bit wider than the Mustang. This was even before all of the computer traction control and other gizmos.

I've driven the 90's camaros and Trans AM, they really handle great even for today's standards those are great driver's cars. A lot of people in the comments have missed the point (probably because they're not watching the vid in the first place) and say Mustangs crash because it's cheap and RWD... You can buy a LT1 455 HP V8 RWD Camaro for $38k that's cheaper than a Mustang GT & Challenger Scat Pack but nobody brings that up. Because the Camaro is a proper driving car even an amateur can drive that and not feel intimidated. Many are attempting to shift the blame from the Mustang to the driver but no, it's really a problem with the car.

Agree with your points as a mustang owner basic thing you can do would be to stiffen the suspension, get some some subframe support and braces you want to eliminate wheel hop as well which is a point I didn’t you make. It allows for better more Consistent traction which makes the car more predictable. Overall the stiffer you can get the car the more you’ll make up for the steering and the lack of communication. Also if you have a GT without the PP1’or PP2 go online and buy a strut brace to stiffen up the front of the car as well.

Its a good looking, good stopping car. With that said, I think because its a Mustang GT, many think its a race car, worse yet they think they are capable of driving a car to its limits. The "limits" of a car are seldom found by the driver, more often, the limits of the driver are found by the car. The margin between all good and oh shit is very small, the better the car, the larger the margin. I think the problem becomes in the option and price variation you can't make the GT as good as the Shelby or the upgrade becomes not a smart move. I think only a small percentage of drivers are as good as their cars, even lesser performance cars. A design flaw, perhaps, driver error/inexperience is where I'd place my bet. Great review again.

Yup you described that perfectly much like how another owner mentioned in the comments, it’s got grip then almost like an on off switch, you loose that grip but there’s no warning or sense that it’s happening and that’s the most dangerous thing
@dr.johntorres249323 күн бұрын
It often looks like over steering occurs, followed by the driver locking brakes trying to stop after breaking loose. Usually starts with the driver trying to do a burn out while leaving a car meet in a parking lot.

I currently own a 2018 GT Premium PP1 with the MT80 Previously owned a 2015 GT Premium. I’ll admit they can get a little squirrelly if you really get on it. Especially if the pavement is a little damp. Lol It’s kinda what I like about them though. If an inexperienced driver that isn’t used to that kind of HP, I could see how it could get away from them. I grew up driving muscle cars in the 70’s so I’m used to the ass end busting loose. Lol

I’ve had a manual and an auto stang (2015 & 2016)… I’ve never crashed my car personally or even come close, but it is one squirrelly car. I think a lot of it comes down to the driver, but there is no denying that a lot of it has to do with the car as well. Also Mustangs are notorious for squatting down in the rear whenever you get on the throttle, and when the spring tension releases on you it sends your back end wherever it sees fit and it can catch you off guard even when you are prepared for it or trying to drift.

I own a 2017 S550 and i daily drive it. Never had a problem it's a great car. most crashes in my opinion is driver fault...Yes it can be tail happy but most drivers showing off panic when the tail goes then they try to over compensate to get the car straight again which unbalances the car and causes the crash. The 2017 S550 i own has a mechanical LSD and if the tail does go all you need to do to is let off the throttle and steering and the car straightens up no issue at all.

I have never felt comfortable in any Mustang. I tend to feel confident fairly quickly, and start to get comfortable with it after a few hundred miles. Own an old, ragged 6.1 6 speed challenger. The steering is NUMB. It weighs 2 tons. But... There is never any doubt what is happening with it once I got used to the size of the thing. Even sloppy worn bushings, it really wakes up once you load it up. People never actually consider them handlers because the numbers, but it doesn't mean they aren't rewarding. They're an early 2000s AMG that you can get with a 6 speed pretty much. Scat Pack and Hellcat were definite steps forward. Comfortable, quiet, capable. The Camaro is in its own world. The track pack cars are insanely and ridiculously fast on circuit. But... I couldn't daily one, and I think the interior is hilarious. Everytime I think maybe a Mustang, and drive one I end up looking at used Audis and AMGs... I genuinely had more fun in a Coyote powered 2wd rental F150. (Had smallish street tires, reallllyyy makes a difference if you haven't driven one on a road tire) Now that the F150 is aluminum bodied... And you can get 4wd... It's really a fantastic platform

I think its front weight bias. You put weight at the back and you would get grip instead of power overcoming friction. I thought the solid rear axle was the cause before, but many on the internet is pointing to the Diff Bushings as the culprit.

I have a 2020 GT with the 10 speed, and I love this car. I will say though that if you are doing a full send, 3rd gear has a habit of kicking out. I ran it down the 1/8 mile a couple of times and on one of the runs she got squirrelly in third. When that happens I simply take my foot of the accelerator and slightly counter steer. The problem is when she goes, she goes. Not much warning. I had a 88 GT, and that had a similar issue. When going around a curve on wet roads, coast. My 2020 has come out in a slight curve on wet roads, barely under any acceleration. I have been driving for 30 years, and this is the highest horsepower car I have owned. I find it very capable, but I leave the traction control on.

This is not a tough one. (400 hp) + (RWD) + (novice drivers) + (a setting where they want to show off) = lose grip and cannot handle it. I have driven all Mustangs up to the GT500 and what you need is respect of the vehicle. As a motorcycle rider you learn this or you die. When you get on a motorcycle that you are not familiar with, you go slow and build hours over time until you know the bike. Novice drivers need to understand this in a high performance vehicle. I don't want anybody to get hurt, but I have to admit I laugh at anybody that recklessly crashes a car or bike. Darwin doing his work.

Im 59, One of my fathers gifts to me was any time we got good snow coverage we would head to the parking lots and put our cars into skids that were varying in speeds and types. The nice thing about that was I learned how to steer in and out of skids as well as get a feel for the feedback from the car. I own and have owned several high horsepower cars that are not something an inexperienced driver should be driving. Having owned Mustangs I can say that the shorter wheel base and how you have the suspension set up can be big contributors to this problem along with the inexperienced driver. Any inexperienced driver that buys a 400+ HP vehicle should go to a place that is forgiving and do burnouts and then add some steering with the burn outs before you go to the local car show where streets are narrow or crowned.

The suspensions in the mustangs in my opinion have not been good in a long time. I don't own a newer model but ive heard several people talk about this. To add to that, a watts link resolves wheel hop and movement on a solid rear axle.... A lot of new drivers think also that pushing the traction control button turns off all systems on a Mustang. It does not. It comes down to the driver pushing a powerful rwd, light weight car over their limits as a driver. I've run my Boss hard on track and in canyons. Maybe it helps to be 46 and from a time and place where driving skills mattered. First car was a '81 Monte Carlo. Drove that through a few Midwest winters from 16-19 years old. Teaches you a lot. S550 should handle a lot better with ifs. Refuse to drive one because it'll put the bug in my ear to buy another mustang. Prefer the raw, you need to know how to drive feel. So the school put a boot on his mustang with a license plate something along the lines of AMCNMSL or American Muscle. This guy threw a fit, and drove off with the boot with rubber burning, metal grinding, and engine screeching. So instead of paying $300 bill he threw a fit and did thousands in damage to his tires, drivetrain and wheels, if not also engine and transmission… I think mustang, although it can be a very nice car, can sometimes draw a specific type of driver. Not all mustang owners would drive off with a boot. But out of all the cars that hd issues with parking, and rules, my bet would be on mustangs. But it’s fun to stereotype and generalize

I feel like drivers are the biggest problem with a mustang it take trial and error if u just getting in one i went from a 2003 v6 to a 2021 gt with work done to it and i had to really learn the car and now i got a 2023 mach1 and i can say the S550 handles good, has good brakes, takes curves well, etc you just gotta learn your car and know what you doing

young drivers don't understand that the summer tires that have alot of grip and they will lose it by wear with in 20000 miles. Most tear them up by 17000- 20000 miles. Tires will not look wore out but they will lose grip and stopping distance. THIS IS THE REASON

No we’re talking about a brand new car although what you say is true

While the issues of lack of driving feel are true that's because everyone wants a Cadillac ride. But the same issue exists with cars that do have good feedback. The problem is paradoxically the driver assists. Traction control, stability management, and abs let people drive faster and more aggressively than they should, or frankly than they have the skill for. It gives people false confidence. People who "drive hard" in these cars spend that time being reigned in by the assists. Once they exceed the limits of what those systems can save them from the car is utterly unrecoverable.

Most people cant push a Corolla to it's limits. Most modern cars are incredibly capable. And most drivers are simply not capable of exploring a modern cars performance example. I have a 2019 GT (manual) - and honestly - the limiting factor is me. As far as driving feel - the mustang isn't as communicative as an STI. It does not feel as precise as an EVO or a GTI or an STI. But that is part of it's charm.

I watch the video. And I agree , I have a 2014 Mustang GT convertible , My dream car , this car will fish tail easily. Thats with the best tires . And I am not in my twenties and I don’t drink . But the car is still awesome.

Looking forward for you to review the shelby GT350. To see if its really a good upgrade to the regular mustang gt

Yea my friend hope to make the video soon. GT 500 drove great but is a supercharged motor, VooDoo should be amazing

@@MeynMotorGroup yeah as you mentioned that a mustang owner said he spent 10k to get the suspension right. So thats a good review to see if the shelby is worth the money or buy a gt and spend 10k. Looking forward to it.

It's a problem with suspension.. It has a weak, flexible suspension. As you push the throttle, you build up energy into the weak suspension, then when you move your foot to the brake, and press the brake, you must understand that the energy has to be release out of the suspension and it does by responding its release thru the suspension and leaves you dealing with that energy, while trying to stop the car... It can be remedied by putting a higher quality, after market suspension kit on it... the suspension needs better springs, shocks, tires, sway bars...

100% correct . the stock cars are shite. looking at the rubber suspension joints they are flexible spongy rubber. the car in stock trim handles like a pig.

As a Brazilian, I think it's a cultural thing. The average Mustang owner only knows and wants to go straight fast. That's most American muscle car drivers. They want the power, but most don't learn how to control it.

Bought a 2021 Ecoboost and was driving on the highway trying to change lanes when I noticed something large on the lane I was changing to. Tried to turn fast to avoid it and the rear of my car almost lost control. I had to swerve twice to get it back under control
@MeynMotorGroup2 жыл бұрын
Yea this is what I was referring to when I meant road imperfections really effect the Mustang when driving harder or at speeds. Mods genuinely help with this but of course that’s extra money an owner has to pay. Otherwise the ride quality is excellent I think it’s extremely comfortable
@ahraranwar32272 жыл бұрын
@@MeynMotorGroup it's a very comfortable car. But it's my first time driving a rear wheel drive car. I assumed it was that but I guess it's something specific to the Mustang
