I'm the convertible owner, AMA! Also some additional fun facts about Shadows: - the Shadow was in production from 1987 thru 1994 model years - before the V6 was offered, the high trim engine was a 4 cylinder turbo engine (pre 1992 or so) with horsepower figures slightly higher than the V6. Why they switched to the V6 I have no idea. The base engine was an N/A 4 cylinder through all model years - Because of all the extra metal needed to keep the convertibles rigid, the convertibles actually weigh several hundred pounds more than the hard top versions - In 1987, 1988, and 1989, Carroll Shelby modified and sold numbered versions of the Shadow: The Shelby CSX. These cars all used turbo 4 cylinder engines. In 1989, only 500 were made, and they put out about 175 HP and 175 ft/lb of torque, which is arguably not bad by today's standards. - The same engine was used in the 3000GT and Stealth, although the DOHC turbo version made roughly double the amount of horsepower as the variant used in the Shadows. The SOHC and DOHC versions both have a similar and distinct exhaust sound that can't be mistaken for any other V6. - The ES badging was actually an appearance package. While most V6 cars were packaged as an ES and vice versa, you could get the ES package with a base engine, or get the V6 (or turbo depending on the model year) engine with a base trim package (sleeper car mode). - the bulge is part of the ES package. The 89 CSX did not come with a bulge hood. I don't recall if the 87/88 CSX did or not. Non ES cars usually don't have a bulge. - The most common colors for the late model years seem to be metallic green and metallic purple. I don't have production numbers on hand but that seems to be what survived the most. - They sold two door and four door variants of the hard top model under the Dodge and Plymouth brands (Plymouth Sundance), and the Dodge only convertible (two door only). The ES equivelant for the Plymouth Sundance was the Sundance Duster. - The four speed automatics used in these cars (technically three with overdrive but whatever) are still in production today and are used in the Dodge Journey (yes they still make those too)

I’ve got a question too. Why does that car have a hood bulge? Actually necessary?
@triptheroad
@triptheroad 5 жыл бұрын
@@Rogdog692002 there is no functional benefit to the bulge, just looks sporty. Even on the turbo cars, the bulge does not give any part of the engine clearance (The 89 CSX for example, does not have a bulge hood). There is conflicting information going around as to whether the V6 will fit under a non bulge hood, but I have seen a few factory V6s that supposedly came with a non bulge hood factory.

Seriously the cars are actually fairly quick and are very light, around 2600 lbs. They have the 2.4 turbo options and the faster 2.2 turbos that were only in the Daytona Shelby Z. Again, for it's time they were actually quick. Obviously you can take the lowest model of any car without respect of its time period and trash on it. I know this is video is obviously also for entertainment purposes but still. They're reliable too (at least the 4 cyl) but they do have one common issue, the head gasket. The block is iron and the head is aluminum so they tend to wear the head gasket out quicker but again before Honda fan boys get a raging clue it's really not far off from replacing a timing belt every 60k miles. Also, I'm a Honda fanboy and a MOPAR guy.

My girlfriend and I necromanced a dead 2.2L Shadow about two tears ago, and I found this video. Two days ago it was totaled, and I find myself here again. It was a shitbox, but we saved it and it saved her in return. Even with all its faults, despite all the things we had to replace, it was a good car.

My first college car in 2002 was a ‘91 Dodge Spirit ES with the 3.0 V6. Never before or since have I owned a car with so much character, yet such wretched reliability. Super fun car to drive, loaded with options, surprisingly peppy to drive, and always broken. Early 90s Chryslers are definitely a guilty pleasure! 🤓

Love the 311 spin-off on the music. This engine wasn’t all that bad in my opinion. It was reliable and responded well to a good exhaust, 52mm TB from the 3.3 liter it was a direct bolt on, you could also split the intake manifold apart and port the crap out of it. My father had a '92 Plymouth Sundance (same car) 5-door when I was growing up. The rear bumper would fall off occasionally, but we'd just put it back on and give it a solid thump so the bracket would hold it in place with friction for a while. The trunk rusted away and we covered the hole with an aluminum sheet and a wooden board. I loved that car. It was the first car I ever drove, practising for my learner's permit. We "upgraded" to a Sunfire when it finally died just after I got my licence.

Ah - my first new car was a '92 Shadow ES hardtop. Even though the memories were good - not fantastic - I went back to the well 10 years ago or so for the '92 ES convertible that was appropriately used up! The low end torque of the 3.0L V6 was light years better than the 2.5 I4 I had in the hardtop. Low torque really did make a difference. You had me rolling about every body panel moving its own way - my convertible was the same. The hardtop was a really solid car compared to its contemporaries - say a '91 Cavalier or Escort! Must have been an aftermarket "feature" with the floorpan weld job done on these. Nostalgia wasn't enough for me to try and hold onto this beast, though!
