What people don't realise is that the whole idea of these older and maybe more simplistic cars is to modify them and build them up into your own personalised vehicle which suits your needs. The fox body, along with some other common rear wheel drive vehicles of the same era, are fantastic platforms which can be built up almost like lego. Superior components from other cars can be utilised along with a myriad of aftermarket parts. The design of the fox body (and other 80's boxy cars) is strange because while not following the usual misconception of what makes a car "pretty", it almost stands alone, presenting its own unique definition of what makes a good looking car.
@anthonygato4072 жыл бұрын

@@anthonygato407 that and they have the perfect build for huge power. Like if you look at any drag race event most common car is this style mustang and it’s because the measurement from the back of the engine to the rear diff. The longer the distance the more power it will handle with out shaking the tires or so forth. Plus you can build them out and have a car that’s around 3000lbs

The 500hp limit only applies to the thin wall casting high output roller blocks. The old flat tappet blocks have thicker walls and are heavier as a result. There's a rumor that the roller blocks made in Mexico are thicker than the american ones. By the way, the 351 windsor is a hell of a lot stronger and pretty much a bolt in swap.
@urdaddywingnut78206 жыл бұрын
ziah Reid-- Yealp, they are- as long as you remember either drop mounts or a cowl hood for the 351 to make up for the bit of height difference
@DucatiPaso7506 жыл бұрын
My understanding is that the Mexican cast Windsor's do have the thicker castings. They are heavier.
@girthquake14136 жыл бұрын
I genuinely don't understand why someone would pick a 302 over a 351. The latter weighs nearly the same and even takes the same parts, but produces more power no matter what you're doing more reliably.
@Sheehy2235 жыл бұрын
@@girthquake1413 Displacement restrictions for certain types of racing is a reason. A 302 in good running condition is also a lot easier to find than a 351 in good running condition, and likely going to be a lot cheaper as they are much more plentiful and were made much more recently. Smaller displacement engines also have the capacity to rev a lot higher and quicker than larger displacement engines generally because of a combination of a shorter stroke and lighter pistons, so if you're building a naturally aspirated engine, something smaller than a 351 may be a more desirable option. This is also why some people will chose to build 4.8 GM truck blocks over 5.3's, you can get them to rev higher. And if budget isn't a huge priority, Dart Windsor blocks are the shit. They're way stronger than any factory Ford block, you can specify them to basically any displacement you want up to just over 400 cubes I believe, and you can chose between iron and aluminum. They're fantastic.
@LITTLE19944 жыл бұрын
Yeah, it's much preferred to use a larger engine. Plus, it's a myth.

I love my Fox body, it's probably not the best first car, there's probably an argument for it being the worst but it's such a fun car and even though mine looks like it should be in a junkyard I still get reactions of "I had one in high school, I love those cars" hell my mom had a 4 banger in my very early childhood and she loves mine because she always wanted a 5-speed 5.0 but by the time the price had gone down she had 2 kids and not enough reason for one, Fox body's will always hold and special place on my heart, whether it's because it's my first car or because of the actual car, only time will tell.

First, the Windsor 5.0 was in the 94 and 95 SN95 Mustangs. They also continued production in explorers etc until 2003 I think. IMO, a lot of the comments about the looks of the Fox Mustangs are a little off base, it was certainly not ugly by the standards of its release in 1979, or at least it's sales numbers would argue the point. It was the stoplight drag race king for pretty much all of the 80's and into the 90's, which was both fun for it's owners but also garnered a seething, quiet butthurt jealousy in the 90's kids, combined with the state of market in late 90's meant "Honda Civic VTEK" and the rest of the ricer scene mostly because the Fox cars held their value through the 90's and the kids couldn't afford one. At least that's what happened around my part of the woods. As to the Mercury Capri: it didn't sell because it cost more and was the same car, essentially. However, if you find one with the factory hood scoop and front ground effects including, and especially, the more traditional grill, it is the closest thing to an early 70's muscle car you will find, appearence wise, in an 80's Ford. I had the pleasure of owning one some time ago in which I had swapped a slightly built 351W(it fit because the factory scoop allowed for hood clearance). Poor, poor 85mph speedo. Ford guys were so pissed, for YEARS that they couldn't get a 351 in those cars from the factory. I can say, after owning one, I can understand why Ford did not want to unleash that onto the public. That said, these cars have the following they do because of the ability to customize them like no other vehicle on the road, before, or I would say even after, through simple bolt on parts(for the most part). In it's stock form it was a fun car, beyond that the sky was the limit compared to pretty much anything else at the time, even engine swaps were on the table and not overly complicated. Local guy even dropped a 460 big block in a notchback when i was in highschool. Got kicked out of the strip for safety violations when he did under 9 seconds lol. Like them or not, these cars were the benchmark of the street for almost 2 decades.

I think what you said about "How much before you've built a new car and stops becoming that make and model", really applies to a lot of the vintage muscle car community, you've done an amazing job on your falcon and you've still kept the essence and personality of the car. Pick up any issue of super chevy or fast fords and usually you'll see a frame off 'resto-mod' coverage of somebody who has way too much money that's replaced everything and has a tasteless interior and just trying to win some face time before they croak. I have owned allot of fun cars. Starting with my first one in 1983. A year and a half ago I bought my first Fox body mustang.An 88 GT 5 speed. It is one of, if not THE funnest car I have ever owned. I love it. Great video. Hit all the points.

I bought a brand new 85 GT which was one of the first with throttle body fuel injection for the 5.0 V8. It was a great reliable car totally stock it would trip the lights in the quarter mile at around 14.70's so for the time was okay fast. Long road trips were comfortable and the hatch with the fold down rear seats provided quite a lot of trunk space. Handling was good but you still had to add weight in the rear in snow and ice. I paid just over 10K in March of 85 and it was worth every penny.

Love the fox body ! The 5.0 was still in the 2nd gen explorer till 2001 ! It was a bit different but still there.You could get the 3.73 limited slip in the explorer too !

I'm pretty sure there was. I know I saw Fox body at a car event that had somebodies name stitched all over it. It was so long ago that I can't say for sure it was Saleen.

Yes. All the way back to '84 there have been Saleen Mustangs.

I know this is a year old but.. Saleen Fox bodies where actually just 5.0 LX Mustangs with a body kit. LX because it was lighter than a GT mostly. They looked really nice, however performance wise they where the same as a stock car because Saleen didn't do any performance mods for some reason.

w33b3l some were actually supercharged I almost bought one after I wrecked my 88 5.0 and it was supercharged but sadly I settled on a 4.0 v6 until I get a new 5.0 here soon also if you didn't know ( I didn't know before me and dad found it) there were also gt350 foxbodies from 84 me and dad recently bought one and are working on it together

I never call that era of the Mustang "Fox Body", but rather "'80s Mustang". He forgot to mention the 5.0 Windsor in them is the H.O version and the 351 does exist. The 500hp limit is a myth. It is possible to go beyond that amount in the 302 with proper modifications but a larger engine is recommended. Personally, I would like to swap their 5.0 with the non-HO my 1989 Crown Vic has or get the 351.

One of these Foxbodys with a 5.0L Coyote in it would be an absolute screamer, but that engine alone will cost you more than the entire car is worth.

In a nutshell, they were the right car at the right time in 1974 - smaller and lighter with no V8 just as the gas crunch hit, and the Ghia notchback nailed the red-hot personal luxury aesthetic like no other small car. But it aged poorly.
@sigmaprojects8 жыл бұрын
Yea I think it was mostly just a design that people weren't fond of after the fact. They sold well and were successful. I wouldn't be surprised if in the next 10 years people start picking up Mustang IIs and making them look great. I already saw one awesome Mustang II with a V10, that car just looks soo good.

The first car I ever loved was my 84 Mustang GT. I saved up from my summer and part time job and bought it in 1990, my junior year of high school. I had the manual version. My step father and I did some nice upgrades to it and it was a serious beast on the local drag strip. Pretty horrible in the corners though. But it was always a blast. Miss that car.

Great video as usual. I graduated high school in '91 and a whole bunch of us walked into the Ford dealership in late '89 and bought a fleet of 1990's. I think I paid $12,400 for my GT. Lots of fun times, but the car tried to kill me several times under- steering into turns or having the brakes boil over. The only cars that could beat me on the street was the GN and C4 Vette. GM Gen II & III F bodies were a piece of cake. But speaking of the C4, it's incredible to think they are in the same price range as the Fox Mustang.

Right after I was born, my dad bought (as his first new car) an '86 Mustang GT 5.0 that became the family car until my parents split in 1995. These were what a Mustang *was* for me for a long time. It would have been my first car, but mom sold it to buy her 2nd husband a CJ7 Renegade. She sold my birthright.

And the engine they used in the 4 banger was synonymous with the mazda/ford ranger. Just like Nissans solution for a rear drive coupe with the 240. Put a truck motor in it!

Same here, but 1984. I did get the 5.0 in the sense that I went to my local Ford dealership and picked up a pair of 5.0 badges to stick on it... I do feel some shame about that in retrospect.

As I said back in the 80s and 90s when we all owned this thing...the fox is a blank slate, tabula rasa, a cavas upon which you imprinted all of what you wanted from a car. You bought the car from Ford and then built it yourself. It's kind of an Ikea shelf of cars but, there is only two predictable outcomes with an Ikea shelf, total disaster or an assembled product. The Fox could be anything you wanted it to be: a dragster, a cruiser, a road racer, a pounding stereo, whatever. That truly makes it unique, despite how common it is. I have just built myself another one..an 86, base notchback with all the guts out of an 88 GT I pulled out of the junkyard. Nothing more Fox body than that, especially since i buillt it myself in my driveway. It's not fast, it's not easy to drive, it absolutely requires you to be attentive every second you are in it but, it is absolutely hilarious. I'll take my 2014 Mustang GT auto to work every day but, squirting around on that little shotgun on casters makes me smile every time.

My first car was a '93 Convertible. Had the gutless 2.3 4 banger but i loved that car! Sold it and bought an '84 SVO. 2:20 that is an SN99, the SN95 was the rounder body that was after the Fox Body, the 94-98. Actually the Fox body all the way though the SN99s were all built on the same platform.
