The first generation Intrepid/Concorde/Vision was a decent car. The 3.3 was painfully underpowered, but the 24 valve 3.5 was peppy and reliable. The second generation brought the garbage 2.7 liter DOHC, which on paper should have been the better motor but wasn't. It had issues with oil sludging due to small return passages from the head to the block and a bad water pump design. The later 2.7 fixed the problems, but the damage to their reputation was done. The 3.2 is a better engine for sure. This owner going through drive belts sounds like a bad idler or tensioner causing a problem. It's not common to those engines. My dad owned a couple of first gen Concordes over the years. He had very little trouble with them beyond simple sensor failures. They road fantastic on long trips. I see lots of the first gens at 200-250k miles. The second gens, not as much.

@brianrowland57137 жыл бұрын
The cloud cars were not a bad platform. They were the replacement for the K, and they even underpinned the minivan of their time like the K did. They were generally well-made, but they were still cheap (comparatively) and thus were "throw away" cars to the average consumer. You still see a lot of them out in the wild though. I'm honestly not a huge fan of the 2.0, but a 2.4 in one makes a great DD.
@digitalrailroader7 жыл бұрын
Brian Rowland my first car was a Breeze with the 2.0 and automatic; it wasn't as peppy as a neon, but the sucker handled like it was on friggin' RAILS! and it was passed down through my family much like the Concorde was; it belonged to my aunt at first, who then sold it to her son, who then sold it to my sister, who then sold it to me. I had gotten it with 193k on the odometer, and the odometer reading when the engine finally gave up was 226,262. Had I had the time, money, and facilities to do it, I would have replaced the engine and kept on driving it.

My first car was a 1993 Concorde. 3.3 V6. By far the most reliable car I've ever had. It was a true family hand me down. I had it through high-school and college. Traveled between home and college in Marquette, MI (8 hour drive one way) at least 8 times per year. When we got rid of it it had 309k miles on the original engine and transmission (never rebuilt). Dont get me wrong, we did some sketchy stuff (headlight assembly held up by a piece of wood, drivers seat broke and the back rest was held up by some sort of handle), trunk lid rusted out, pai t on the plastic quarter panels was deteriorating, but that damn thing would not die. Had a couple electrical gremlins (trunk lid would pop open on its own, horn would blare on its own) but it got me through multiple snow storms of up to 20" and not get stuck, many road trips, moving countless times etc. Loved that thing and would probably still be running if we fixed the fuel line lol.

Thank God for Fluid Film, I'd REALLY have blown it without that. Really gotta take it easy on those oil cooler lines though, they're held on with a little C Clip. My family had one new in '99. Despite some teething issues with certain parts due to being a new model, that car was pretty much unstoppable. We once smacked the underside on a mountain road, and were able to drive it about twenty miles to a gas station where we were able to buy enough oil to keep topping it off until we found a mechanic to do a patch. If Chrysler had only kept up that kind of quality instead of panicking and bending over for Daimler-Benz they might still be a contender.

I remember when the 300M came out and thought it was one sexy thing, especially compared to the boxy K- car variants from earlier years that were still beating about the roads at that time. Only 8 years later, working at a local dealership, one came in on trade. I was shocked at what it was valued at. As an employee I could have had it wholesale for $1500! Granted it had 200,000 km on the clock, but being what it was the previous owners were a retired couple who enjoyed driving around visiting their children and grand children. The sort of people who fixed anything that went wrong, changed the oil and fluids etc. Thus everything worked on the car and was pretty much flawless. In the end, instead of the car being wholesaled our sales manager decided to take it home. It became his daily driver and family car for the next 2 years. I don't think he had a single problem with it.
@happydappyman7 жыл бұрын
Bmovie5000 i know my old 300m is still going to this day. 320,000 on the clock with everything on the car working. a great ride if you know how to take care of a car. the 3.5 is bulletproof and i guess i have to conclude the same thing about that transmission cause neither has ever had a single issue. Just perform the recommended maintenance and it wont give you problems. These things get a bad rap from the combination of the terrible 2.7 (which these cars avoid) and owners that don't know shit about maintenance.

"You always love the car you first learned how to repair." For me, that's the 5th gen Maxima. My first car -- 2001, SE trim, 143K on the odometer. Instrument cluster lit up like a Christmas tree. It was poorly taken care of but for 700 dollars in 2018 anything that runs and drives at all was a good deal. I did my first brake job on there -- thankfully all disk type -- all rotors, all shoes, both rear calipers because they'd seized and began to leak. The compression fitting on the power steering line began spewing onto the manifold and smoking, that was a sphincter clencher for a gas station clerk who didn't have the money to get towed home and thought it was the engine at first. The transmission always had an issue where if you got it hot, it would drop out of gear at a stop light, and eventually that became too much to deal with. Nevermind the fact that the VQ30DE-K had an issue where you'd basically always need a timing chain replacement at 175K and that was slowly creeping up, or that most of the sensors were STILL bad and I was getting worse and worse fuel economy by the day, even using premium like I was supposed to. (The previous owner did not, she took "Premium fuel required" as a suggestion so when I got it, it knocked like a cop.) None of that was what made me get rid of it, though it did start the idea in my head. I was moving and I knew for a fact that it would neither make the trip nor pass emissions inspection once I got it to where I was going to live. So I let it go for a pittance (and made sure they knew *everything* wrong with it that I knew about) and bought a 2010 Corolla when I moved down here. Then a few months back I got rear ended, and in the last month have dealt with the insurance company finally deciding they were going to total it out because of frame damage, and I finally got into something I can say I wanted rather than could afford, a RAV4. I love my new car, obviously I do or I wouldn't have overpaid so badly for it (actually for this market I got a decent deal). I came to love my Corolla and I was sad to see it go. But I'll always hold a torch for that 2001 Maxima that didn't owe me a thing but was my first taste of freedom.

There's just something to these cars, the Concorde, 300M and Intrepid of this generation. They seem so big and comfortable, so smooth and modern, that they actually look unusual. Like the most retrofuturistic full size sedan that never was. I'm dying to drive one.

The LH cars were great. Helped Chrysler sell lots of cars. I had a 1995 Dodge Intrepid ES in college. Was a nice car. Traded it on a 2002 Chrysler 300M Special, which was one of the best cars I’ve ever owned. Fast forward some years and a few other cars and I’m back in a Chrysler…2019 300C Hemi. Gorgeous car and drives like a dream. Really hope Chrysler has a comeback.

Thomas Smart CAD design blues, you have to remove the wheel to remove the battery, but fuck, if you buy a Chrysler, you deserve it. Chrysler is the Donald Trump of cars, you bought it, you live with it for 4-8 awful years.

I always liked the Concorde back then. I had an new 1996 Eagle Vision during my school time which is basically the predecessor (LH Platform). Bench seat in front is always better than regular seats but the bench has to be split so that you can adjust each side like 2 separate seats. More leg room.... The LH was a great platform, very reliable. The 3.5L engine was great and reliable. The later models had a 3.2L option and a 2.7L. The 2.7L is VERY picky about oil and change intervals. It will sludge up and die with regular oil if you don´t change it very often....

And still I loved that car

Condorito I had a '99 Taurus and I hated it. I hated it worse then my Bonneville. It never wanted to stay alive. Every month without fail something else would go wrong with it. I couldn't do it any more and I trashed it. I was forced into it from an accident I had when I had my Toyota Tercel. That thing took a beating and kept rocking. But I couldn't do it any more with that Taurus.
