Music Director Alan Gilbert leads the Orchestra, Acting Concertmaster Sheryl Staples, and mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato in Strauss's song "Morgen" at National Concert Hall, Dublin, Ireland, on April 16, 2015. Her approach reminds me of Janet Baker not the flamboyant but the sincerity the total absorption of text the filling in of all the background music and knowledge so she just channels Strauss. Intensely moving

There exist a few versions with Elisabeth Schwarzkopf and Lotte Lehmann, I like especially Glenn Gould /Schwarzkopf. But Joyce DiDonato sings it so well and the violin without any disturbing vibrato.

Argh, why did they stop right before the "stumm werden wir uns in die Augen schauen" bit? That's one of pivotal moments. Still, DiDonato is great as always.

Wunderbare Stimmführung/Legato, aber eine verstärkte Arbeit an der deutschen Artikulation wäre gut, man versteht fast nichts, und das ist schade um das Gedicht. Siehe Meisterkurs Elisabeth Schwarzkopf an "Morgen". Siehe Arbeit von Fischer-Dieskau.

Wobei ich bei aller Wertschätzung für Schwarzkopf sagen muss, dass ich bei ihrer Aufnahme auch kein Wort verstehe. Strauss scheint in der Hinsicht vielen Probleme zu bereiten.

There are three contemporary conductors I dislike - Gilbert, Barenboim, and Nezet-Seguin. I don't know why - they are good conductors and great musicians but,... They make me nervous.
