Excellent review, Frazier. Really good insights and tips into what I think is one of the better car camping tent lines ever made. As a former REI employee, I also appreciated the time you took to discuss the Co-op and the history of barrel style tents. My wife and I love the Kingdom 4. It's our "camping condo" when we're going for at least two nights, preferably three or more. For fewer nights, we usually use our quarter dome because its so much easier and quicker to pitch. Our Kingdom is from the same generation as yours, and over time REI has made improvements such as a clip-on rain fly. I am curious about the latest generation of Kingdoms with a revised pole system. In truth, I broke one of my aluminum side poles pitching it solo one too many times and replaced all of my side poles with fiberglass poles from Tent Pole Technologies out in Vancouver, WA. I highly recommend this upgrade. I always felt I was on the verge of breaking a pole during the "lift" phase of set-up. No worries now with the heavier duty poles. Once again, many thanks for your thorough and thoughtful review. Cheers!

Vaughan Branch Vaughn, I have also dealt with the owner of Tent Pole Technologies and found the experience very enjoyable. He is a great guy. I forgot his name but his parents live about 40 miles from my home and I dated his sister many years ago. Small world.

Thank you, Frazier Douglas, for a great review of this tent. I have found all of your videos extremely helpful and it has inspired me to camp about 90 days this year. REI seems to be an excellent resource as an outfitter and I have found that their return policy is the best that any retailer offers. I do own the KIngdom 6 and the garage and the footprint after thinking that their cost is a small price to pay for the added convenience. The garage gives me a good place to store things outside of the tent to keep the inside clean. Also, I purchased a small propane heater to use on cold mornings and it adds some dramatic comfort to the inside. One other use for the vestibule or the garage is as a privy when a Lugable Loo is added. It is a great convenience. Thank you, Frazier, for all that you do for making camping so enjoyable.

Yes, we also use those reservation sites but we frequently don't plan our trips more than a few weeks ahead. And we also like parks with good security. I look forward to seeing your photos.

I love your videos, very thoughfully done. Quick question, I dont winter camp but sometimes when its cool (in the fall) I will want to use a plug in space heater to take the morning chill off. I liked the Big Agnes and Eureka but with the roof mess I'm not sure how you could warm them up. Any idea of a good 3 season that will hold some heat ?
@moderntentcamping4 жыл бұрын
lawrence porter Thanks for the kind comments Lawrence. My recommendation is a canvas tent. Kodiak makes some nice ones but they are expensive. If I was younger, I would definitely buy one. But we are getting up in age and may not be able to camp much longer so we bought an old used wedge tent and fixed it up. I have several videos about canvas tents and this old wedge tent. Check them out.

@@moderntentcamping Thanks very much, I actually watched your videos on canvas tests (part 1 and 2) but I only do short trips and felt that they wouldnt be a good fit because of this.

lawrence porter I think it would better than most polyester tents. Same holds true for the copper canyon.

Chris, We love to camp in Florida during the winter months. But we have found it to be difficult to secure campsites, especially on weekends. And Florida state parks are really tough on hammocks and tying other things to trees. How about the Ocala NF? Please send photos if you can. You can send them by email and I'll post them.

I use two different web sites for making camping reservations. There is a booking window that allows making reservations sometimes as much as a year in advance. To book in Florida State Parks I use REserveAmerica. com and to book in National Parks I use Recreation.gov. We stayed at ALEXANDER SPRINGS REC AREA NFs IN FLORIDA - FS ----in Ocala for the first 15 days of February. it is a great place. -----and for 15 days prior to that we stayed at --ST LUCIE SOUTH LAKE OKEECHOBEE ----we reserved those through Recreation.gov ----another feature both of these parks have is security ----the gate is closed at night and a passcode is required to get in ----I like that random vehicles are not driving through the park at night

Hi Mr. Douglas. You always have great videos. I was looking at purchasing a new tent, the Marmot Halo 6 or REI Kingdom 6. I heard that the Halo doesn't come with net door to keep the bugs out and to let the breeze in. Does the Kingdon 6 come with a net door? Thank you for your help.
@moderntentcamping7 жыл бұрын
Pola-pola C Hey Pola-pola. Yes, the Kingdom has two large doors and each is fully screened. I don't know the Halo well, but I camped in an early version of it called the Den. It was a good tent but held in heat more than other similar tents. Now, our favorite tent is the Marmot Limestone. The Kingdom is a good tent but it takes longer to set up and that is important to us because we frequently have to make overnight camps along the way of longer trips. The Kingdom zippers are also a little sticky. Thanks for watching my videos. Let me know if you have any more questions.
@pola-polac90507 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I saw your video of the Marmot Limestone. I was actually wanted that one too until you made a very helpful point about the mesh door, and how it doesn't keep the heat inside well. It gets very cold here in Japan at night during Spring and Fall seasons. Ahhhhhh so hard to decide! Thank you also for your points on Guy Lines.

Thanks for the comment Chris. Tell us more about your camping trips. Where do you go? What shelter do you use? Do you have any photos?
@cjm29687 жыл бұрын
Hi again Frazier----in winter we go to Florida and camp in Ocala National Forest, and also Stewart/Pt St Lucie ACE lock campground ---right on the canal. On the shelter, I have been using two REI alcoves bungeed together. A lot of people complain about them because they have some flaws. STILL, they are the best setup especially with the wind walls ---it adds a tremendous amount of comfort to get out of the rain and wind---it actually prevents canceling a trip ---because it makes the weather bearable. ----I have learned a lot from you Frazier on guy lines and stakes and when the KIngdom 6 that I have is and the Alcove---are both mindfully staked and guyed out they can withstand a 50 mph wind and rain. Florida campers know which stakes to buy---with their advice I went to Home Depot and bought 10-inch plastic stakes that have T tops----------back on the camping ----I try to camp in an area that has many amenities ----Ocala is near Deland where the down town is great and Stetson College has art museums and concerts for free -----the St Lucie area is on the Atlantic ocean and a short drive to Daytona Beach----I do have photos ---not sure that I know how to post them here

griff34 Thanks for the complement. I would go with the Marmot Limestone! You may want to get a space blanket to cover the mesh door in cold weather and reflect the suns heat in hot weather.

Tan N Hey Tan, I've never used the base camp but I camped in the REI Family Dome and Camp Dome for several years. These later two tents were similar to the base camp. I would bet that the base camp peak height is lower, the side walls are sloped to reduce interior living space, and
