Awesome video lol. No squatting for me. I got a collapsible stool (1.5 lbs), cut a 5x5 inch hole in the seat, attach a compostable bag. Dig cathole and bury it. If in an area where you can't dig/bury, its already in a bag for packing out. When I get to camp, I have a stool to sit on.

I’m surprised too, that LNT is expecting everyone to drastically increase plastic use…I will say the wag bag seems a lot more convenient when you gotta go asap but man…
@MaiCohWolf23 күн бұрын
@@nickiparrott7717LNT recently produced articles on why it’s important to pack out turds now instead of burying them. If I remember right, several studies have revealed that backpacking sites that have been popular for a while have tons of buried poo that hasn’t really decomposed. Like decades old poo. The toxicity of human poo in particular leeches tons of harmful stuff into the soil and water, especially bc of the prevalence of medications and the fact that most people don’t exclusively eat the stuff in the area where they’re hiking (like the bears do). They say it’s better to pack it out bc waste management systems are better at neutralizing the poo, and if you’re tossing it in the trash (which may be more appropriate if your pack out method involves plastic) then at least the poo gets concentrated at a designated waste site. (Piling all the trash in one area instead of leaving it all spread out is what humans have done throughout prehistory.) The use of plastic is a pain, but LNT’s whole thing is about protecting wildlands. Plus, many people have developed less plastic-y methods for packouts - they’re just aren’t as likely to get used.

@elisebrown51579 ай бұрын
Is there a guideline for how far off the trail you go, or how far from a water source you should be? Also, that wag bag seems like an AWFUL lot of plastic waste just to pack out something that's pretty natural. I'd argue that burying, along with burying some biodegradable TP, is the much more eco-friendly option. I might keep a wag bag in the glove compartment, however, just in case of a really long traffic jam.

If you didn't filter your water properly which resulted in a case of abdominal distress ( explosive diarrhea)... would that affect the geometric configuration of your hole and/or maybe more importantly the proximity of your squat to try to avoid collateral damage like backsplash ?

@mokster5 Жыл бұрын
Yeah I thought that was interesting. I’ve always buried my tp, though I’ve heard some places require you to pack it out
@hanwagu9967 Жыл бұрын
it's because toilet paper can take 1-3 years to break down in the woods not to mention lasting affects of some of the chemicals. So, if you are going to bury it in the woods, then at least get biodegrable toilet paper which breaks down quicker. Althouh, it still takes longer than when you flush it down the toilet and gets chemcially treated at the sewer treatment facility.

You mention packing out the toilet paper after burying the main load and some folks may be interested in why. I have some personal experience that may shed light. A group of us were canoe-camping in the Quetico Wilderness and we decided to camp on a small island. One end of the island had a campsite, so the other end evolved into a large area of cat holes. The cat hole end of the island was covered with TP scraps. It seems that the local squirrels liked to dig up and spread the paper. I have no idea why, but that is what they did, so you had to watch your step when you went to do your duty. And that, guys and gals and non-binary pals, is why you pack out your TP. (Top of the hat to Kenji Lopez-Alt for the inclusive language.)

Bidet only works if you use a hand, or at least something for the peanut butter. Room temperature water at 7 psi does not clean peanut butter off a porous surface. There are literally cultures on earth where there is a hand you never touch for that reason.

In Ontario we have to pack out our TP by law, maybe the whole load, I don't know for sure. I can't fathom how dumping more plastic in a landfill rather than just burying some TP is better for the environment. Should we agree on a system where we leave a stick there afterwards poking straight up to show people the area is occupied?
