Hey friends! I realized there's an error in the video labeling the Deuter pack. The Deuter is the Speed Lite 22, not the "Speedlight." Whoops! Do you have favorite daypack? Any must-have daypack features you can't live without? And is the Gregory pack BLUE or GREEN?! Comment below! - Miranda

As a kind of "clydesdale" hiker (6'3" fairly broad across the shoulders), I ended up getting a pack with much more capacity than I need for most day hikes (REI Trail 40), just because it fit my back better than anything I tried in the 20-30L range. The upside is it's got enough room to go from a day hike to an overnight or lightweight weekend, the downside is most of the time I'm just walking around with a half-full pack, which I suppose is better than a half-empty pack. The Gregory looks pretty green on my screen, but it's an old laptop.

Probably deuteranomaly which is a red green color blindness, but it makes the difference between bluish green and yellowish green from blue and yellow respectively. I know because that's where I was at watching this lol. The pack and slippers are blue. The mug looks dark blue to me :)

There's a color tint in the video. In the video it looks more green, but if you look up the backpack in real life it looks more blue. Also, people interpret teal differently. I see it as a shade of blue. Others see it as a shade of green.

It is actually very important that the compression straps go *over* the zippers. The zippers are the components on a bag that are most likely to fail, and the compression straps, if the bag is properly engineered, help to keep the zipper from failing. In a properly engineered bag, the compression straps go *over* the zippers, which takes stress off of the zipper when you tighten down the straps. In poorly engineered bags, the compression straps sometimes do not go over the zippers, which puts additional stress on the zipper if you tighten down the straps on a bag that is fully loaded.

Don't most manufacturers have some sort of warranty on their zippers? seems like that would be mandayory.
@ipgvids
@ipgvids 9 ай бұрын
@@edleifer6719 I see manufacturers offering warranties on bags and bag-components all the time, but I have yet to see how such warranties could be useful. If your zipper fails when you're on a hike or a trip, the warranty will not be very helpful at that point. If you're taking a bag on a hike or trip, you need for the bag to be sufficiently well-engineered and well-made that it survives the entire hike/trip. How are you going to use a warranty if the bag breaks during the middle of a hike/trip? (I guess, if there is a post office nearby, you could mail your bag in for warranty service and camp out by the post office for a month until it comes back fixed.) In any case, the sort of bag design that puts extra stress on zippers through poorly designed compression straps would probably void zipper manufacturers' warranties: zippers are not designed to be pulled-on laterally by bags with poorly engineered compression straps -- no zipper is designed for persistent stress in that direction -- some do better under such stress than others, but none are designed for that.

Can you do a video on what you (personally) pack for a day hike? Would be awesome to see your version of the 10 essentials, snack suggestions, stuff for Nala, etc. A lot of the videos are geared towards backpacking (which is great!), but I'd be curious to know more about how to plan and execute shorter trips "in the wild".

Fellow REI employee here! Loved the video and I love to sell the Gregory Jade 28, I think it does so many things well. One thing to consider, too, though, is how the pack fits your individual anatomy. I never discuss specific features with a customer until we've found a pack that is comfortable for all day use, because if you can't stand to wear it, the features of a pack don't matter!

And I’m thinking as an old, retired advertising person , how remarkable it is for me , who would never walk into a store to hear a 20 minute schpeil on a product I don’t need- and in fact, I have been in a loving relationship with my North Face for over a quarter of a Century. Now I can only think of Jade 28. I hope you’re happy, Day Pack home wrecker.

Deuter also makes a slightly larger pack at 28 liters that comes with a rain cover and a little beefier shoulder straps and hip belts. I love that pack for a long day hike or when I’m carrying my DSLR and telephoto lenses and need more padding to carry the heavier and bulkier weight. I then have the Deuter 22 Speed Lite SL for quick 1-2 hour trips where I’m not carrying as much gear as an all day hike. In that 22 L pack, I keep it packed with all my stuff ready to go so I can be quick and spur of the moment. That smaller pack also lives in my trunk so I always have emergency supplies with me. Which was surprisingly useful during an evacuation from wildfire back in 2018; I had emergency equipment with me if needed. I did find that loading the packs up with the sand bags in the store helped me decide which pack felt comfortable. I legitimately forgot that the Deuter pack was already filled with sand bags when I went to “add weight”. I had a good laugh, and decided that the way that pack distributed the weight made it feel like the weight wasn’t there, was the best choice for me.

I got two bags in the past year for hiking and I love them both! For short hikes where I don't need much beyond the essentials, I use the REI Co-op Flash Pack 18. I love how simple and light it is, and that it can be used as a stuff sack as well! For longer day hikes when I need more gear, I have the REI Co-op Rucksack 28. I've been super happy with it (and it does have a rain cover!). It also works equally well for a work bag, when I need more space/carrying capacity than just a small purse.

It was getting a little long in the tooth until someone broke into my car and stole it, last summer. But while I was looking to finally replace it, it never failed to do the job I needed. I went in thinking I’d end up with an Osprey, but ended up with the Gregory Jade 28 as well! (Hubby got a Gregory Zulu 30). I cannot express enough how grateful we are for the amazing folks who work at REI! The person working in the packs spent a solid half hour with us as we tried different options out with some weight in them to see how they felt. So far I am really liking the Jade 28! I use the Osprey Manta 24 as my daypack. The Manta/Mira packs are very similar to the Stratos/Sirrus but do have the front stretchy stuff pocket if that is a feature that is important to you. Manta/Mira are more expensive than Stratos/Sirrus, but Manta/Mira do come with a high quality hydration reservoir. So that would make up part of the price difference if you were also going to buy one of those. For me, I usually have more compressible things at the top of the pack (like a jacket), so I like the positioning of the top compression straps. It does go over the zipper, but I keep the zipper pulls at the top and usually do not need to open past the compression straps to get things out. I thought I would like the trekking pole holster. But it is not as quick to use as I thought. So I only use them in the rare situation when I don't want to stop and also need both hands free (including not just letting the poles hand by the hand straps). Overall, it's a great daypack that could probably be stretched into an overnight pack (though, I haven't tried).

I just went through the similar pack search the past month and narrowed down to the men’s versions, the Osprey Stratos 24 or 34, Osprey Manta 24 or 34 and Gregory Zulu (Jade) 30 or 35. All nice packs. The Stratos seems - for a larger guy- the hip belt doesn’t come around the waist far enough- and would need a hip strap extension that you can get from Osprey. Led me to the Manta which fit better and I Liked the features on the 34 better than 24. The Gregory Zulu series however has a longer and larger hip belt so it actually sits more on the hips (for a larger guy like me) and real comfortable. I was able to also try on a Zulu 40 and ended up ordering a Zulu 35 from Gregory since REI doesn’t carry. A little taller than the 30, top loader and a zipper on the back to also get into the main compartment. Looking forward to trying it out on the trail.

That Gregory pack is definitely the best of the bunch. It's another house brand, but Decathlon makes a 20L day pack. Hip belt, two stretchy side pockets for water, elastic draw string on the outside that I use for my coat once I warm up. A zipper at the bottom and drawstring on the top. Also has a top compartment (brain?) that I don't think is included in the 20L. I looked at REI's stock for a while before deciding to try to Decathlon 20L day pack. The hip belt has a pouch that's large enough for my cellphone and a handful or two of treats. There's padding on the shoulders and lower back that life the pack off your back. Just something else for others out there looking.

For a long time, I've had a Flash 65 for as my multi-day bag, an Osprey Kestrel 46 as a full-day+ bag, and a small Patagonia shoulder bag for short day-hikes, and I just recently picked up a Flash 18 for day hikes where I want a bit more storage. Plus the small Patagonia bag was too bulky to pack in a larger bag for excursion-type hikes from a camp, so this Flash 18 is gonna serve that role. Out of all of those, I've probably used the Patagonia shoulder sling bag the most, but it's super limited in terms of what it can reasonably hold.. looking forward to putting some mileage on the Flash 18. And yes, of course we want to see a post-use review of that bag!

I still hike with a Gregory Shasta I bought used on line in 1998. Enormous expedition pack. Indestructible. Gregory is a sure bet.

I like the look of the Gregory Jade 28 pack, especially with the front and side loops, I think I might get this pack as I need one that I can secure with straps or bungee, on top of a larger backpack.

I have an mid 2000s Manta 34 and recently upgraded. Living in CA, I like the trampoline frame mesh. I came into an REI thinking about a Stratos or the REI traverse, but ended up w/ a Gregory Zulu 40.

I love my Osprey Tempest 20 for day hikes, could do with a couple more pockets and larger hip pockets to hold a phone but it's really lightweight

So I have a bunch of packs from just hanging around the city, to more sophisticated things like going to work all the way up to backpacking packs. I have different sizes for all occasions. When I am just running to the bank and back, I take a very small pack. Then when I am going to visit family around town I take a larger pack. If I am commuting to work I take my huge commuter backpack and then if I am going hiking and backpacking I have packs for those occasions as well. Although my briefcase is usually the one I take to work but it is between my brief case and my work pack. Oh by the way, all of my packs are named after girls.

Green is my Favorite color, and next to your blue pillow and blue Osprey pack it's definitely more green than blue even though it's Teal a great color as well. Great review, but I lean to favor Osprey they have never let me down.

I'm with you on Gregory packs. Just got a new day pack and it's the Zulu 30. Yeah, a bit larger than I would have chosen but my torso length is 21½" and the Zulu fits me well. Oh, and those sunglasses holder? Couldn't have cared less about it... until the first time I used it. What an awesome feature!

My favorite day pack, now discontinued, was the LLBean Adventure Pro Pack. 28L, a huge bucket top, two zippered top pockets, two zippered side pockets, two mesh water bottle pockets that I could fit a Nalgene in (while still wearing the pack!), a "kangaroo" pouch on the front where I kept my dog's stuff, daisy chain loops for extra cords, gear loops on the underside, and compression straps! It was absolutely bombproof with 800D material coated in DWR. I took that pack to Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Missouri, Virginia, North and South Carolina, Vermont, New York, Pennsylvania, Florida, Texas, Oklahoma, Michigan, DC, Maryland, Montana, and Oregon. It handled university, summer camp work, travel by airplane, boat, bike, foot, train, bus, and car, 3 hospital stays and 9 ER trips, hundreds of day hikes, and 5 ultralight overnight summer backpacking trips. It lasted me 7 years until the zippers gave out and couldn't be repaired, and LLBean doesn't make it anymore. I literally cried when I finally threw it out. I replaced it with the Cotopaxi Torre 24 liter, which is a super solid bag. The bag would be the most perfect bag known to humanity if the LLBean Adventure Pro Pack hadn't existed. So the Cotopaxi Torre 24 is the second best bag known to humanity.

I recently got a Deuter Speed Lite 24, and judging from the first 20 or so miles I've hiked with it, I think it's a keeper. The hip pocket is JUST big enough for my Cammenga lensatic compass, but even that's a tight fit, so I'm not sure what they were thinking would go there. I can reach the top pocket by reaching behind without taking the bag off. I can awkwardly reach my water from the side; it's a challenge but worth it. (I don't like bladders.)

The Osprey compression strap goes over the zipper on purpose. It takes the pressure off the zipper itself . You don't want to pull on one side of a length of zipper.
