Even with the open top models it is so hard to get them fully dry. The wet storage method is great! After cleaning, fill with water and a little vinegar. Let the acidic water into the hose and then store wet. Before using, empty and fill with fresh water. If you forget to empty and refill, worst case scenario is that you have some tangy water. But no mold or mildew!

My old Camelback cleaning system came with a modified plastic hanger that squeezes enough to fit inside, then pops back out to keep the interior of the bladder open so it can dry better. I'm faithful about using that every time I get home or won't be using the bladder for a few days. If it dries well and I take care of the mouth piece, I feel like I can go a bit longer before having to take it all apart for a deep clean.

Miranda, remember water flows to its lowest point. It's a gravity thing. :-) But you hung your bag with the opening "up" as opposed to "down" to let the water run out of the opening, which it won't do as you hung it. The hose you did right with both ends down, but I'd have removed the bite valve from the end of the tube. Also, for me, I often will use a metal hanger formed to keep the bag open or I'll take a bottle or something else that will fit into the mouth of my water bladder to stand it upside down or I'll use a dry cloth or paper towel to balled up to absorb the water and keep the bag open for air circulation. Just a few handy dandy tips. And I'm not a real "hiker" or "backpacker." I'm just a guy who uses water bladders of different sizes and kinds when I horseback ride on trail or go bike riding and sometimes when I'm out just for a short few miles in the woods (nothing long distance or overnight. Stay safe, stay clean, and stay hydrated. And keep up the great videos.
@robadventure35004 жыл бұрын
Very nicely done, as usual; you have a clear, playful, and engaging presentation style. I find that it take days to fully dry a bladder like yours (I have the same one) unless I roll up a fresh dish towels and stick into down each side of the bladder to absorb 90% of the moisture and then hang it upside down in the sunshine. This way it's not an odd house decoration for any longer than needed and doesn't stay wet long enough to start mildewing again. And I agree with your choice to get the cleaning kit. Anything complicated that you have to do on a regular basis it's worth spending a few bucks to make it a lot easier. Thanks again!

That’s great! Too many day hikers don’t prep for the overnight emergency. They take a small detour to see some flowers, or a lake, and end up either lost or a misstep that leaves them stranded, possibly injured. No spare layers to keep them warm and no signalling device if their only smartphone gets busted during the fall. Rescue comes in when someone notices they’re not back home, but that’s about Day 2 or 3 of the ordeal.

Quick Tip: Using a mouthpiece cover will help keep the mouthpiece clean and make it last longer. You can get these mostly from the "tacticool"/ milspec reservoir-manufacturers e.g camelbak, source etc. It also helps ( in conjunction with a neoprene hose-cover) to keep it from freezing in lower temperatures.
@meredithanderson33863 жыл бұрын
They dry better if you turn them inside out! Or, at the very least, prop it open so some air can get in there and the sides aren't touching each other. The top slider halfway in works pretty well to prop it open.

If you're planning a van tour. Could you please explain what the different colors of the states represent on your map on the back door of Vince? Cheers.
@pdxcorgidad3 жыл бұрын
Could be wrong, but it appears to be a scratch-off map of the United States with the names of the National Parks in the large circles. My guess: Miranda has been to Washington, Oregon, New York, Virginia and North Carolina and has visited Mount Rainier, North Cascades and Olympic, all in Washington, and Shenandoah in Virginia but has not yet made it to Oregon's Crater Lake. Also looks like she MIGHT have been to Denali. My partner gave me a similar map for Christmas last year. It's a bit different in that only the national parks, represented as evergreen trees, scratch off, but it's an amazing map. Even though I've been to many of the parks, we decided I would only scratch off those we've visited together. So far: Big Bend (twice) and Mount Rainier. Much more in our future! Sorry for the rambling but hope my answer helped!

Great video. Thank you. I like the freezer suggestion from nickpro1 - brilliant. But if you're going to use the process Miranda used, you will need to place something in the reservoir when you hang it to dry, to ensure the sides of the reservoir don't stick together and retain the moisture of the cleaning process. I put a wooden spoon in the reservoir to keep the plastic sides from sticking together.

Two more tips - only put water in your reservoir. Far less likely to get bacterial growth. Also, try freezing your reservoir. Leave an inch of water in the bottom and either hang it, or lay it flat in a freezer (probably dont have one in your van!) if its frozen you cant get bacterial growth. Then just add water and go. NO CLEANING!
