Not only is this magnificent in the arrangement and overall execution but it's one of those records where the background chorus shines as being an essential part of the success of the record. My favorite version of this oft-recorded song. Another gem!

The Exciters did a really hot version of this song. Their version really moves from start to finish. This recording is just so-so! But thank you anyway for the upload!

I had no idea she was "Paula." However, this did get some airplay on WBRU in Providence, shortly before it became a 20kw commercial FM station. The arrangement still sounds wonderful - miles deep - and has the richness the song deserves that Them could never bring to it. (By te way, there is a different Jill Jackson, a Swedish pop singer working in the early 21st century who sings in flawless English but is not the same person as "Paula." However, she does a nice version of "To Know Him Is To Love Him.")

A bit different than the 1 i remember by 'Them' who had the young Van Morrison as lead. I think it was the follow up to Gloria. Was a big hit in So Cal. Jill's version is different & new to my ears but i like it too - i remember Paul & Paula's record '1st day back at school'. Never knew she was Jill. Gotta love U-Tube.

I love reading background stories like this. We learn that Jill Jackson was Paula of "Paul And Paula" and that her version of "Here Comes The Night" vied with that of Van Morrison and Them. Lulu was actually the first in England to record the tune. Don't know whose was the very first. They were both from 1964 I believe. EDIT: Now I see (after playing your video again!) that Miss Jackson recorded hers in April of 1965. Pretty sure that Lulu's was the first, followed by Them and Jill Jackson.

But, check out The Exciters 'There They Go'. I think this is the actual first version of this song. Although the phrase 'here comes the night' is not in it.

@@greaterworks13 - Good grief. I have that on a CD. How I come I never noticed? So was it Burns himself who rewrote the song and included the guitar riff from Marv Johnson's 'Come on and stop' (Also one of his songs), or was it whoever wrote the arrangement for Lulu's version of the song? One thing's for sure, this version of the song is totally based on Lulu's version, right down to the vocal inflections. All they've done is add bucketloads of what my effects pedal calls 'echoverb'! :D Mind you, it should still have beaten out Them's version, which I think is awful. One last question for the world. Who wrote the arrangement for The Archies' 'Sugar sugar'? It's that riff again...
