In the western part of Kumamoto City, near the foothills of Mt. Kinpozan, you'll find Iwato no Sato Park, and right nearby is Unkanzenji Temple.
Unkanzenji Temple is said to have been established between 1336 and 1392, and in the back mountains, there is Reigando Cave where Miyamoto Musashi wrote the "The Book of Five Rings". It is surrounded by dense foliage and enveloped in a solemn atmosphere.
Along the narrow path leading to Reigando Cave, there are the Five Hundred Disciples of Buddha.
These stone statues were dedicated over 24 years, 150 years after Musashi's time, and they come in various appearances, symbolizing the equality of Buddha's teachings to all people.
Reigando Cave is where Miyamoto Musashi wrote the "The Book of Five Rings" .
In 1640, Musashi was invited by Hosokawa Tadatoshi, the lord of the Higo Domain, to spend his final five years in Kumamoto.
During this time, Musashi, renowned as a martial artist who founded the Niten Ichi-ryu of swordsmanship, as well as a scholar versed in tea ceremony, Zen meditation, and calligraphy, secluded himself in Reigando Cave.
and he penned "The Book of Five Rings" considered the culmination of his life's work in martial arts. He passed away in 1645 at the age of 62, and it is said that his remains were laid to rest in armor attire within the woods along the Bungo Highway, where the Hosokawa clan's procession for the Edo period sankin-kotai passed.
Furthermore, within Unkanzenji Temple, wooden swords used by Musashi during his duel with Sasaki Kojiro at Ganryujima are also preserved.
