Arita Stroll - A Town Alive with the History of Pottery

During the cherry blossom season, I went for a stroll around historical spots in Arita Town related to Arita pottery, such as Sueyama Jinjya Shrine.
* Arita Kan (Arita tourism association)
This is the tourist information center in Arita Town.
Here, you can find guidebooks about Arita as well as pamphlets about surrounding areas such as Hasami-yaki and Imari-yaki.

* Sueyama (or Tozan) Jinjya shrine
Right in front of the approach to the shrine, a train passes by.
The shrine was established around 1656, but it was destroyed by the "Bunsei Great Fire" in 1828.
It was reconstructed in its current form in 1880.
Within the shrine precincts, there are torii gates and guardian dogs made of porcelain scattered around, giving it a unique charm often referred to as an outdoor art museum, distinct from other shrines.

* Monument of Yi Sam-Pyung Pioneer of Arita Porcelain
To the left within the precincts, there is TOSO-ZAKA.
Further up, about a 5-minute walk away, there is a Monument of Yi Sam-Pyung Pioneer of Arita Porcelain,
erected in 1917 to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the founding of Arita ware.
From here, you can enjoy a panoramic view of Arita's landscape, including kilns and traditional townhouses.

* Arita Ceramic Museum
The museum is housed in a pottery warehouse built in 1874.
Visitors can admire exhibits such as the "Ceramic Red Painted Guardian Dog" and the "Sometsuke Arita Sarayama Craftsmen Exhaust Picture Platter" which are designated as
Important Cultural Properties of Saga Prefecture.

* Tombai Walls
The Tonbai Wall is made by solidifying discarded materials such as refractory bricks (tonbai) used for
climbing kilns and kiln tools with red clay to create a fence.

* Arita History and Folklore Museum
The history of Arita Sarayama (Sarayama: pottery production area) began with Korean potters brought during the Bunroku-Keichō War (1592-1598).
By the early 17th century, Arita and its surrounding areas succeeded in producing porcelain for the first time in Japan, which began to be exported to Europe and other regions.
Entering the 19th century, porcelain production spread throughout the country, and modernization
progressed with the adoption of new technologies such as Western techniques.
During the Pacific War, metals were scarce, leading to the production of coins, buttons, hand grenades, and mailboxes made of ceramics, reflecting the harsh conditions of the time.
Despite overcoming challenging periods, Arita continues to thrive as a town of pottery and ceramics, upholding its tradition of craftsmanship.

* Izumiyam quarry
The birthplace of Japanese porcelain.
In 1616, the Korean potter Yi Sam-Pyung discovered porcelain stone, the raw material for porcelain, in this area, marking the beginning of Japan's porcelain industry.
The porcelain stone quarry presents a spectacle today due to being excavated for 400 years.

* The townscape of the Uchiyama District.
The townscape, which bears the 400-year history of Arita ware, has been designated as an Important Traditional Buildings Preservation Area by the national government.

In spring, cherry blossoms bloom, and in autumn, the foliage offers stunning seasonal landscapes.
