The worst thing is that they were accusing him of queerbaiting. It's ridiculous how out of hand the queerbaiting discourse has gotten, like, the term used to mean when a show signalled that there was going to be LGBT+ representation in it just to attract LGBT+ viewers for then to either end up not including LGBT+ representation at all or just a pathetically insignificant gesture like in the Beauty and the Beast with LeFou "first gay Disney character", now however it can mean anything. I also find it pretty revealing that they were accusing Kit of queerbaiting for supposedly being straight while playing a bi character and not Joe, who at the time hadn't said a single word about his sexuality either. I think that was the main thing that amused/upset Kit about this, how people were assuming that he was straight and that Joe was gay (and getting mad at him for supposedly being straight) when first of all neither of the two had said anything about their sexuality (but nobody was getting mad at Joe for it, just at him) and second of all when Nick's whole character arc in Heartstopper is about defying the expectations that were put on him just for being masculine (like, even Elle, a "woke" trans girl, says to Charlie at some point "you might as well give up right now, he's the straightest person I've ever seen!"). Like, did these people literally not get a single thing from the show?

People who obsess over his sexuality, or the rest of the cast’s sexuality, and whether or not there are inter-personal gay relationships going on between cast members, is a clear sign of fetishisation. And this always happens with LGBT male relationships in media, why can’t gay people just be treated like everyone else, instead of either being absolutely despised, or put on a pedestal. I know people get frustrated with the “unlabled” label but I don’t mind it. Sexuality can be private, your private life can be private. Representation is so important because it normalizes all the forms of us and there’s a big thing in the queer community about how not many people actually have “fluid” sexualities but that doesn’t remove the reality that people will _feel_ fluid and may not think it’s appropriate to assign labels to themselves.
@raec78912 жыл бұрын
i think the unlabeled sexuality gets frustrating when it’s someone who’s clearly always in straight relationships and doesn’t ever advocate for gay rights and actually tries to make a difference in the community. i don’t think that’s kit’s case, he is more than supportive of everyone and loves to show his support, just wants to have a more private sexuality and time to figure it out, which is honestly normal
@linn4692 жыл бұрын
@@raec7891 I can see what you mean but I feel very conflicted about people trying to bring queer baiting in to the real world, it's a thing in movies but can it really be a thing irl? We're not entitled to details about anyone's sexuality and we should let people just live their lives how they want, but I do get the frustration of seeing someone always appear straight, never advocate for gay rights but then also doing the odd queer-seeming thing. I don't think it's productive to speculate about or try and dictate how other's show their sexuality, even if they are a celebrity. Some people will take advantage of the queer community while other's might just be trying to find themselves and I think it's important that we as a community don't try to decide which is which.
@shannonmitchell1672 жыл бұрын
He didn't say he needs to figure it out. He knows and it's private. Period. "Seeing just the beauty and pride of queerness, I think that's enough to give anyone the confidence to be themselves." this is such an important statement. For so long we were used to LGBTQIA+ characters suffering and being unhappy, it sorta plants in your head the idea that you can never be happy, that there's no hope for people like you. What this show has done in terms of good representation is unbelievable, and that's just a testament to how amazing Alice's work is. I wish Heartstopper was around I was 15 and struggling with my own sexuality, years and years of self hate and repression to a point that even today, at 24, I'm still finding bits of my personality that I didn't even know they existed because I hid it so deep in fear or what people might say. It's almost like I was robbed of living that, of being happy like that. But I'm glad that it exists now, so the children today don't have to feel like that anymore. There is hope, and things does get better.

Every time I hear an interview with Kit, I respect him even more. It's so good to hear that the actors are there for each other and help each other out. The whole discussion with the labeling is just so, so tiring. And I'm glad he's not giving into the pressure. People need to stop assuming other people's preferences, because it is not only really rude but also very tiring and exhausting.
@noahxavier62532 жыл бұрын
I can understand concerns about actor sexuality when it comes to concerns about straight actors playing LGBTQ+ roles most of the time (considering wage issues and representation), but there are certain circumstances, like this, where that concern isn't as prevalent. Not to mention, the comment came off more as fetishization than legitimate concerns over queer actor representation. Like Kit said, he's so young, he's a teenager, and no one, especially at that age, should be expected to know every detail about themselves and then publicize it. When I was his age, I still thought I was a cis-female! I think we're so used to grown 30 year-olds playing teenagers in shows that the concept of these actors still being teenagers is so different, we're not used to it, and we really do need to adapt how we view and treat it as an audience. I think Kit handled this with such grace, and he did a phenomenal and incredibly respectful and deeply meaningful portrayal of Nick in the show.

My life has changed a lot since I watched Heartstopper. I feel more hopeful and confident. As an 18-year-old Turkish homosexual, living in Turkey is really difficult. There are a lot of homophobic people and that's why I keep my identity secret. But after watching Heartstopper, I came out to my 2 aunts and they said they would always be by my side. I've already came out to 3 of my friends before. That's why I feel happier now, maybe if I have a relationship, I will open up to my parents, but I don't know. Anyway, I really thank the whole team, especially Kit, Joe and Alice. Kit Connor is the first and best deep crush in my life. I hope i can hug him one day because I need it.

I found it weird how people could watch the show, get a firsthand glimpse of Nick's struggles with coming out and Charlie's trauma of having been outed, yet still get all up in the actors' personal business. They don't have to talk about anything they aren't comfortable with. And more recently, apparently people have been trying to talk to Joe's friends and family. Like that's utterly terrifying.
@johnking51742 жыл бұрын
I saw Joe on Twitter address that, and yes you are right, his family will now become a target for fans, who feel they can approach them to get to Joe, and the same with Kit, and also remember other cast members too will have this. Joe put it so well that just because he put himself into the public eye, doesn't mean his friends and family are. Very well put.

I am a middle-aged, openly gay guy who has gone through a lot. But Heartstopper still resonated with me in many ways. I am profoundly grateful for the way the show portrayed LGBTQ+ issues so positively. I was born in 1968 so growing up in the 70s and 80s, I never really can recall that many program with positive LGBTQ+ portrayals. The LGBTQ+ character is either a socio-path, a deranged person, miserable, or dead. More importantly, it shows us as just people like everybody else dealing with the same issues. Bravo to Kit Connor, Joe Locke and all the cast members and to Alice Oseman. Beautiful work!

Kit explained the party scene with Tara and Darcy so perfectly. he says everything I felt while watching heartstopper put into words. It's so incredibly refreshing to see queerness painted in such a joyous light and to see lgbtq couples being happy since a lot of the time the media mainly focuses on the struggles of queer people which, though it is important, it's so wonderful to see queer relationships in the way this show portrays them, I think it's so important, especially as a young queer person, to see that it is possible to be who you are and still live an incredibly happy life and have strong, healthy, and positive queer relationships, which is so rarely shown in media, and heartstopper does it in the most amazing, heartwarming way. This show means so much to me.

The thing about what Kit is going through right now is that it’s not even just about people desiring a form of representation in his irl persona. People are either accusing him of queerbaiting or trying to fetishize his relationships with his costars. This is really Kit’s first role acting amongst a cast that are primarily his peers so I’m happy he has these relationships who just _get it_ that he can fall back on now and I’m happy that his costars have him who is experienced in the industry but still around their age that they can also rely on. I hope the next couple of years of filming for season 2 and 3 will bring out more joyful moments instead of more irl shippers
