i went inline skating once 24 years ago, and the instructor said i was a natural at it, he couldn't believe i'd never done it, but it just felt so ... normal ... so i definitely agree that it in many ways mimicks the fundamentals of skiing and carving .... and would be a useful tool for learning.

Very nice! I find this is good training before skiing, as I can only afford going to the Alps few weeks per year, buy tarmak roads are awailable to me all the time! thanks! Also I find difficult to do pole plans together with a turn, something I need to work on. Thanks!

Good to see you back on skates Reilly! I use the same skate with 90mm wheels. I also recommend the Rollerblade XT because it's the closest feeling to a ski boot. I'm playing with slow short turns on steeps to control speed. Would love to see a video of how you handle steeps on skates. Thanks for the video!

Yes for many years I didn't realise one could do ski movement on blades. There are so many styles of skating that you really can do anything.

Thanks for this video Really! How would you describe where you are feeling your pressure fore-aft on the outside foot vs the inside foot when you hold the feet so closely aligned during this inline skate turns? All of the Non-skiing focused parallel turn tutorials have the inside foot so far ahead of the outside. Obviously, that would not translate well to skiing. I love how close you hold the two feet in terms of fore-aft, but what's actually being felt is of course impossible to see from a video. Any insights that you are willing to share? Thanks in advance.

The biggest difference I felt comparing ski and roller skating that rollers way more sensitive to fore/aft balance movements and leg twisting also has to be more accurate.

@great_lakes_ryan
@great_lakes_ryan 2 жыл бұрын
The 3x110 should work fine. There could be several reasons for difficulty. One that I found was not getting far enough inside the turn. If you’re standing on top of the skates their performance will be limited. Getting inside the turn will make it easier to trace the arc with your outside skate (and just match it with the inside skate).

@@great_lakes_ryanThe 4*90 work better because they have a lower center of gravity and a longer frame. Frames shorter than your feet force your body to spend more energy on fore/aft balance. But good observation nonetheless.

Nice Job! Actually worth a try! As a young racer I was always afraid to mess up my carving technique by imitating skiing on rollerblades but I realized that carving and steering are just different aspects of skiing that can (and need to be) practiced independently of each other. Are there special rollerblades and wheels for that or just regular ones?
@ReillyMcGlashan
@ReillyMcGlashan 2 жыл бұрын
yes you just need to know what aspect of skiing you are training with rollerblades... You cannot do proper carving on rollerblades, but steered short turns are pretty "close"

A stiff boot like an urban skate is helpful. I started with 3x110mm wheels then transitioned to 4x100mm for added grip. And premium wheels are worth the cost. As for skiing itself one huge benefit is working on fore aft pressures. It completely transformed my skiing.

Hi, I am beginner skier and also inline skater. Although I really love both, I find it different as skis on edges make a turn, on the other hand skates don't, you need to twist your ankles or upper body. Moreover you can't make forward position on skates as they don't provide the support as skis. For core and legs exercise and balance it is excellent , but do you think rollerblading also can help improve skiing technique for beginners?
@ReillyMcGlashan
@ReillyMcGlashan 2 жыл бұрын
Yes i do think it is a great tool for any level. You just need to know what the movements are to focus on for your level and mistakes.

I got a 5 wheeled modified rollerblade that is like a DH board for the pavement, stable at 50 mph +, I don't care about "pretty" turns, I love to rally and am addicted to the high pitched whine the bearings give when ripping over 40..
@KenpoOjoko
@KenpoOjoko 2 жыл бұрын
Great video! I see you incline less when you do inline skating, which makes sense because you are moving slower. But I wonder what difference you feel. You have more resistance from the pavement than snow. Do you tend to twist more on the pavement? That's what I tend to do.
@ReillyMcGlashan
@ReillyMcGlashan 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is impossible to have the same inclination on blades... The wheels do not hold on the pavement like ski edges in snow. I feel more resistance on skis for sure... Rollerblading is very smooth feeling, much smoother than skiing as far as pressure spikes go. It is quite a nice sensation, like floating really.
@KenpoOjoko
@KenpoOjoko 2 жыл бұрын
@@ReillyMcGlashan You make both skiing and Rollerblading look very smooth. Yes, I think you get more resistance from snow, but more friction from the pavement? It's interesting that you say Rollerblading gives your smoother feeling. Perhaps, I should find a long incline where I can get more momentum to see if I can do it smoother.

@@ReillyMcGlashan great skiing and inline skating technique. For sure different surfaces (pavement vs snow) but as far as pressure goes and where the ankle is in relation to force... different feeling also because the wheels of the skates are directly under the skater's ankles vs the ski edges which are offset from the center of the skier's ankles. Love the side by side comparison
