This is very useful. A hyperobject is a good way to describe a system that is not easy to understand in a reductionist way. Others describe getting involved with systems like this as dealing with 'the messy middle'. It is more like dancing or - as you said - surfing the waves. We cannot control everything but we can understand what we can control to guide things the way we want them to be. To gain control we must let go of that we can never control.

Great talk Jennie! World-class. There were a lot of useful takeaways from your presentation that I'll bring back to my team. Thinking about design systems as Hyperobjects (especially at scale) makes a world of sense, and the way you've implemented your new design values and principles were simply inspiring. Cheering for you - and thank you!

OMG, Jennie Yip, I cannot believe someone has similar thinking about HYPEROBJECTS as a Design System! LOL, I'm so excited! My research in fine art was about HYPEROBJECTS. As a product designer in my first life, I learn a subtle similarity narrative about art, design and technology. Your talk was exciting !

All this work; and somehow, they still manage to make some of the worst enterprise software ever made.
