My younger daughter had very troubled teenage years, full of anxiety, depression and self harm. I sent her this song and said it made me think of her and when she listened to it, she just cried. She is now a wonderful, confident, clever and beautiful young woman in her mid 20s but every time I hear this song, it brings the tears. Great cover, many thanks.

I'm not a young man. And last year, I was listening to this song a whole bunch for some reason (I wouldn't have thought of it as my favorite Joel song)-- but I thought a kind of bookend would be to alter the lyrics to fit the same narrator, talking to the same person, but toward the end of the second person's life, and making that second person more reflective of what's happened since that song came out. (I also had the anxiety, depression, and self harm). Perhaps extra poetic that he wrote this about his father. Here. You can be the only person that will ever see this (if that). The phrasing is a bit off, but works if you find it: Hurry up, you lazy child You were kinda ambitious for a little while And we know you're so smart But also know you're really afraid You put out the fire, gained worry and doubt There's a lot less to you since it burned you out So much you won't do and Oh too many hours in the day-ay-ay And now that the truth is told You didn't get what you want But you sure got old You never really kicked off and now your time is almost due I think you realize.. Vienna wasn't for you Hurry up; you've still got time You could be much more than jokes After a bot'le of wine. It's just not that romantic to be borderline for life "A shame", describes the life you lead There's panic and sadness and unmet need You always thought you were wrong And wouldn't stand up for what's right You had no passion, you had no pride There was never any hope of being satisfied Live on, and those debts will all come due Why don't you realize.. Vienna's not for you Hurry up, you lazy child Your phone hasn't rung in a very long while So what? It's not like it bothers you I think you realize... i’m nearly eighteen and i cry every time i listen to this song because i remember when i was 14 and depressed, anxious and with very bad self harming. now it brings me peace knowing i’m okay and happy❤️

My first thought--even before you reached that first electric summerwarm mmm--was that soon as this song reaches its end I'm going to listen to it again. And that says so much about how all the elements working together come rolling off the screen in this super, mightily sensitive reading. The attention to how the chords should be timed; the tricky picked transitions made good; the words expressed in nonfussy natural diction, and most of all, the story told like you both see it--in that unfeigned kind of singing that most artists just strive towards--make for a directline video. Holy smokes... ladies this was just beautiful. When The Stranger came out, I never cared for Vienna all that much. Always thought it was over produced. Buy your version is simply hard to stop listening to. The simplicity of the acoustics and vocals (which are superb) is just outstanding and brings to the forefront the lyrics.
