I've always found AB an absolute delight to listen to. A kind and compassionate person. And humourous too.

Not sure if you read this, but I love your talks Ajahn Brahm. The way I understand it, every moment the consequences of our actions can come into existence again, in that sense they are reborn. When we have children, our genes are reborn. When we teach, our teachings are reborn when they are remembered and applied. When we are kind and caring, kindness and caring can be reborn (when those around us experience it, remember it and copy it). When we intend to cause suffering, suffering can be reborn every time it is experienced and copied. In a more literal way even the atoms in our body may one day be part of another creature (maybe it is not the most pleasant idea, but our skin flakes, when they are eaten by mites become part of that mite, when we die our ashes may become part of the earth, becoming part of a tree) In that sense we can be reborn infinitely. What is not reborn? There is, from an ultimate point of view, no self to be reborn. When you die, YOU are never reborn, because you don't exist (the creature with your exact genetic make up, your thoughts, memories, personality, brain is a lose arrangement of properties that tricks itself into thinking it exist as one thing, an ego). Aspects of you may be reborn as described above, but not in a romantic way, not in the same arrangement. Some Buddhists believe you can see past lives, some don't. I don't see any credible scientific proof for people reliably seeing past lives, but there is a lot of proof for the mind making up memories (it does it all the time, everything we remember is an interpretation of reality). I don't think it has to be depressing if rebirth is not romantic, I think it is beautiful that we can be reborn through our legacy, because there is a place where we can control that (not the future or the past, but in the present moment through our actions and the mind states that we cultivate). As a part of history, however small, our legacy will always be around. So let's make the most of this moment right now and be kind and caring to all, especially the people and phenomena we don't like. They can teach us a lot. Probably nobody reads this far, but if they did I would love to hear from you. Does this make sense?

It makes sense. No self to be reborn. So it is kind of a joke to say when you get enlightened you don't get reborn. Because you see there is no independent self any way. Then you see there is no time. You are always in the present moment. Past , future and alternative reality are imagined now. Nothing fancy. All of that is true, but only if it is true for you. You can think that "all your thoughts" is you visiting alternative universe. You call it past lives because it makes more sense to everyway person. Or call it a dream or just forget it. Wish me sweet dream 😴

It is difficult for me to imagine what l enlightenment / awakening would be like. Probably a lot less spectacular and romantic than we imagine. Maybe those brief moments of serene wisdom and calm we all have, but that permanently.

@thegoodnamesaretaken. Well said! Just as in the physical world, all material things can be measured to go through changes in form when conditions are right as water into ice, steam etc. Or coal into diamond.👏👏👏

These left a deep impression on me: 1) Forgiveness ceremony: Whatever I've done by body, by speech, by mind, intention lodged by accident, or things I didn't do which I should have done, would have upset you or hurt you. I'm sorry! Please forgive me. You said that with sincerity because you know you are not perfect. 2) It is important that we can grow from Life to Life in these beautiful qualities. The meaning of life is to grow. Not growing in our physical strengths but growing in our mental goodness and kindness. 3) No one is obviously perfect so you do make mistakes and that's the best way we learn. You cannot really understand what love is until you had your heart broken. When it's broken it gets all mixed/messed up and it starts to grow from there 🙏 Thanks for sharing!

If a tree falls in the forest... depends upon the meanings of each and every one of the words used, the tradition of their use and the willingness to engage in "iffy history". Living in Germany, I often say that I have no "Würde". This word is a homonym for "value" and for the conditional congrugation (case of possibility) of "to be" ("would" "WOOD it have fallen? or even make a sound?"). In doing so I obviate such if-then thoughts while also denigrating the idea of this having any value. So, beginning with the word "If" or "when"... (long statement) pages later. This reminds me of the joke of the dying father whose last wish from his son was for him to obtain a pink-polka-dotted-ping-pong-ball. I often find myself in this position - of course.

@Finger. It is humbling enough to bring forth tears when faced with a symbol of virtue, compassion, wisdom & peace. But i guess one's response is dependent on one's level of perception.

"further than Science" is pretty much the definition of "pseudo-science". They are nowhere NEAR the same thing. So let's do better: Science is Objective and unprejudiced; religion is subjective and deeply prejudiced. You cannot refute this.
@MustAfaalik2 жыл бұрын
@Phoenix. Absolutely. Yet the modern scientific mind is parallel to the "citta" of 2500 + year old Buddhism. And being objective has its limitations, thus it is said Buddhism begins where science ends.
