DM I got today: "watching the weekly compilation where i'm hearing your story about camping and toothpaste and how that attracts bears and i just wanna give a little more context on that since i'm somewhat of an expert on bears. it's not actually the smell of toothpaste in and of itself that attracts bears, but what that smell implies. because that smell implies that you have good oral hygiene, which makes you attractive and desireable, since there will be few or no instances of you cuddling in the middle of the night and disturbing the bear's sleep with bad breath. also, contrary to popular belief, bears actually tend to be quite big on personal hygiene and grooming, especially as a social thing, so showing that you do in fact brush your teeth means that not only can you cuddle all night, but you can also get up and brush your teeth together in the morning while he hums 'i'll make a man out of you' from mulan into your ear. if you're lucky, he'll also help you to trim your beard."

And it's all thanks due to the great and successful politician named Helmut Kohl, whose friends told him that the internet was a scam and would never catch on, so stopping fibre and investing into broadband was clearly the correct decision, as well as the 2 chancellors that came after him, who did nothing to salvage it, but rather decided to state "The internet is new territory, therefor we can't make any meaningfully fast decisions!"

Fellow German here, and yes our Internet is really unstable. If you are lucky and can have a good connection, but we still have spots, in our country, that has no Internet. Zero. Nothing. No Connection what so ever. Politician say, they will fix it, but most of us just accepted that it will never get better and that we get laughed at us. :')

I hate shilling for any of Musk's shit, but have you looked into Starlink? I couldn't get decent internet where I was (shitty old Broadband that cut out constantly because I was too rural for fibre cable) and ended up getting Starlink instead. It's been amazing.

Truth in the industry is: German internet is internationally already one of the most reliable ones with the best reach on average. That costs some more, yes. But compare the average pay of a Romanian to that of a German and then you will see: German internet costs a fraction of Romanian internet.

Regarding the last clip: In Germany there are only 10% of all households who have glass fiber connections to internet But the thing is that your home counts into that statistic, even if it isn't connected to the glass fiber and the wires go a few metres past your home so the real number is even lower than 10%😭

As a regular backpacker/camper, do listen to that guy who told you about the toothpaste, Otz. In the US, we use something called "bear bags," where we pack everything that a bear could smell and want (food, toothpaste, deodorant, basically anything that has a smell), put it in a bag, and hoist it between two trees with paracord so they can't get at it. Stay safe!!

As a german I can confirm our internet is mostly shit. Because an ex chancellor saw TV as the future and not internet so he decided that every household should get connected with copper wires and not fiberglass cables. The house I live in is 24 years old and we only got this year the chance to pay our internet provider to connect our house with fiberglass wires.

What about our (German) Internet? Party politics and an economic policy that has been refuted by academics for several decades. Firstly, in a previous crisis in the private sector of the economy, we overreacted and put a rule in our constitution that states that the state may only take on minimal debt to finance the state and the rest must be raised through tax revenues. Ergo: the economic growth that is prescribed in the EU must now be financed almost exclusively by withdrawing money from the economy beforehand. Creating new money, as is customary, may only be minimised. It's like trying to fill a leaking bucket by stirring it. But - it is in the constitution and cannot simply be abolished. -.- As a result, we have a very limited budget for expenditure and investment. And now, over the last 20 years, we have ALWAYS let a minor party, which is actually only represented in one of our 16 federal states, decide where the budget for the internet and transport (roads, railways, bridges & infrastructure, etc.) should go. Two thirds regularly went to this federal state and, according to the Chancellor at the time, the Internet is still ‘uncharted territory’. Unknown, nobody knows what to do with it. Rather unimportant. THAT'S WHY we have bad internet. -.-
