It's a waste of a perk slot most of the time as you could be running something a lot better. It's also true what @hopesfall2win said. If a decent team knows you're running Lightborn, they'll stop going for the secondary objective of flashlight/flashbang saves and just focus completely on gens. If you're good at DbD you want survivors to waste time going for saves that they aren't going to get.

I gave up on DBD ages ago. The inherent issue with the game is that when one side is having fun, the other isnt. In most pvp games, regardless of how one team is doing, there's always a chance to have fun. In DBD if you are survivor and you are against a nurse who is slugging at 5 gens, then you want to DC. If you are killer and get a game like this, then you just never want to play again. It also contributes to a cycle of toxicity where people have a bad game, so the next game they take all the strongest perks and builds to try to avoid having a bad game again.

I had to stop playing killer very much at all. I don't have nearly as many hours as a lot of people. But, I still have 3,000 myself. I played my first 1,000 hours mostly as killer. Very few survivor games. I thought killer seemed like it would be badass and fun. The more I played, the worse it became. I didn't understand what was going on when I ran into a locker squad my first time. I'd grab, they'd flashlight, and repeat. Then throw in head-ons here and there. "Just go for someone else" - when all 4 of them are doing the exact same thing, I didn't know what else to do. This was my first couple hundred hours. Eventually one broke off to do gens, that I clearly didn't notice. Gates powered, and ten more minutes of heads ons and flashlight saves.Then standing at the exit until the last second before end game collapse is over. Followed by end game chat, letting me know how GGEZ the game was and I should KMS. I had no idea that kind of play had existed in DBD up until that point. When I started, I thought t-bagging was a sign of respect, saying "thanks" or "gg" at the end of the game. After that locker squad, they let me know how covered in feces they left me. My last couple thousand hours has been almost entirely on survivor. With maybe 100-200 hours as killer. I can't play more than 1 or 2 games as killer, before I close it out now. Blows my brains out when I see survivors complain about killers. As an almost entirely survivor based player now - survivor is so much more laid back and relaxed than killer. The occasional tunneling killer, or camper - I understand it, and it doesn't bother me in the slightest. I say this after having just finished playing a survivor game with all 4 of us out against Plague. She had ONE hook the entire game. Killer side is pain after a certain point.
@TheEldenCheese9 ай бұрын

I completely agree with this! For years, I truly loved watching the gameplay and it's incredible unique aspect in how it's so difficult to have any other game skills translate into this gem. I genuinely love this game, and when it came free on epic, it took me a while but I hit 1k hours. I still feel new and it's fun, but I've seen a lot of my friends from different game genres (FPS players, strategy games, card games, etc) just drop the game for things like this. Minor stuff builds up over time and even my intense feelings for this game burn out often because I feel helpless in some situations. I'm no means the best, and I take solace in that when I fail, but watching creators like you I've seen for years have no counterplay sometimes makes me feel scared to even play the game sometimes. Thank you so much for still being positive for so long, and be able to give criticism when it MUST be given. Much love
@heyguysitsbeth9 ай бұрын
I'm still relatively new to DBD, but even I have seen so much stuff at this point where its more just disappointing as opposed to angering when certain things happen. Sometimes you just end up in unwinnable scenarios due to your opponent's perks and you just think "well. what do i even learn from this? what could i have even potentially done differently?" and sometimes theres just nothing. I recently played a match where I downed someone, and I see someone far away with a flashlight and I think "oh okay I can't pick up since that person has background player and a flashlight, so I need to deal with them first" but before I could even finish the thought, someone else with FTP+Buckle Up ran in directly infront of me and picked up the survivor. Nomatter what action I took there, I had no way of winning, if I pick up instantly, I get blinded and they get saved, if I hesitate for even a second, someone runs in with FTP+Buckle Up and entirely erases the down. Sometimes I make a bad play and kick myself for it, but hey at least I know for the future, but sometimes there's just nothing you can do at all and theres nothing you can even learn from.
@BwanaLasPelotas9 ай бұрын
The problem is that developers designed this game to help survivors, no matter how many mistakes they do. Things like Resilence+Adrenaline combo to literally reward you for being injured (Increased gen speed completition), Buckle up+For the people to injure yourself in exchange to instantly pick up someone and still being able to tank a hit instead of going down, Background player+Flashlights to hide far away from the killer who doesnt suspect anything and still make it to save someone either by dropping a pallet or with the flashlight, and that's only a few things.
@darkodom9 ай бұрын
My biggest gripe has to be perks that are just get ourt of jail free cards. That goes for both sides, though. But spending a solid minute chasing someone just for 30 different perks from 3 other people to instantly erase all that progress eats away at your soul. Or being able to play extremely stupid and all your mistakes just don't matter because of a saving grace from a perk. It's so infuriating. And like you said there's just no room to learn. You literally can't do anything about it besides lose.
@CaptainDoomsday7 ай бұрын
The best move in situations like that is probably to pose over the downed Survivor and listen for oncoming footsteps. Thankfully, FTP + Buckle Up has now been removed as a combo due to being disgusting, but the one sliver of counter to it was if you could manage to hit the Survivor attempting it during their approach. Of course, Background Player users don't need to guess if you're actually picking up because of how generous the perk is, which is why it's nice that has also been nerfed.

I’ve had games like this, and I’m nowhere NEAR 900 hours. Bully squad consisting of: - Rescue Builds/Flashlights+Flashbangs - Sabo Builds/Sabo Toolboxes - Either endurance or genrushing? (It was months ago, I don’t remember the specific details). And they proceeded to say “I deserved it” in the endgame chat because I had NOED or something. It’s like you say in the video, these perks basically give survivors MULTIPLE extra hook stages, which is fine in isolation, but when a group takes advantage of it in order to outright bully the killer out of the game, it really makes you not want to play anymore from how infuriating it is. If there was a perk that effectively decreased the number of hook stages a survivor had, as quickly and as easily as SWFs were able to pull it off, there’d be riots. There’s no easy way to counter a seal team 6 “rescue” squad without resorting to something like tunneling, which they’ll ALSO give you shit over.

I quit because, as an M1 killer, we are required to stay closer to the centralized gens and are not allowed to patrol gens 500 miles away. That means we are FAR more likely to hit the 8 gen regression limit than other killers, and almost guaranteed to if using surge or eruption. Surge, for example, is a staple on m1 killers, and it is DESIGNED to trigger in quick succession if survivors are out of position, but with the 8 gen regression limit, surge use actually punishes the killer by locking gens up early.

They seriously need to make it character level based matching as well as win/loss reportless history (when one or the other player of a faction has not been reported for being afk to lower mmr) to avoid unfair matches and team ups of the opposing faction and the fact they haven’t is going to be the serious dip that DBD will most likely experience with their newly acquired player bases.

Survivor requires several thousand hours to be good with. Not because it's mechanically intensive, but because survivor power comes in the form of game knowledge. Not just learning how every killer works and how to counterplay them, but also learning how to run tiles properly, understanding spawn logic, learning how to chain tiles together, etc. Note that when I say "a good match" I don't mean a match where you will win. I would say for this particular game it was important to be on top of the survivors as breaking the pallet animation can make it easy to lose survivors. So i started playing survivor more, I didn't play it much when i started but i ended up only playing them after been burnt out from playing killer. Playing as a survivor in solo queue had it's own issues and slowly playing as a survivor that didn't wanna just go for chases and flashie saves made the game just feel boring. The only times i play is to play 2-3 matches every couple months or when a friend wants to play it. Alot of interactions with the community in-game has ruined alot of the fun for me and how outdated the game feels with only changes that feel very small just doesn't feel like the game is improving. My enjoyment at this point is only really watching people play the game and most of the time it's otz. I keep checking in on the game and wanting to see how it changes but whenever i get the motivation to play the game, i just can't bring myself to queue up for a match. I miss the fun times with this game

I don't see any issues here. Based on everything I've read on Reddit this is exactly how the game is supposed to be played. The survivors are using their perks to survive and are having fun while doing so. It doesn't matter if you, the killer, have fun or not, nobody cares about that. As long as you don't slug/tunnel/camp and let them use their perks and have fun you did your job! Watching this game is just another reason to laugh at BHVR's ability to "balance" this game.

I love this game, been playing it since early 2018. In my time I've seen such a change in this game, from the realm reborn to every release. I even followed the game since before 2018 through people like you and other streamers and youtubers. To see one of my favorite games become more and more beginner unfriendly I worry for the health of the game, especially with the developers ignoring their own designated community heads (the fog whisperers). It just kinda leaves me wondering how this game will survive if issues aren't addressed. I often get so frustrated with so many issues and difficulties, but seeing your optimism and ability to accept these flaws keeps me in the spirit to see this game grows. Thank you for your view and kindness in this game Otz, truly.

Just watched this video and I hard agree. I have 1.3k hours and it just feels frustrating mainly because my matches feel so skewed. Half of my games are p100 survivors who have way more time in the game with the best perks and addons and it feels like if I don't tunnel or have op perks, then I can't do anything and just get bullied. The rest of the time it feels as if I'm going against newer players and it feels awful to just stomp them. I love dbd and I have for the past 3 years, but the game has recently not felt as fun. Yeah i really do NOT get the "this is so infuriating" message. This was a hard-fought 2K, 10-hooks game, which is a pretty good draw, on the worst killer in the game. It's fun to have those games where you get challenged like this ! None of them were even toxic. I am a very new player, i've had and watched games against actual bully squads, and this is nowhere near those teams being toxic to you the whole game, and you getting 0-1 hooks by the end of the game because you couldn't slug them all. Very rare but THAT'S an actually frustrating match, here even Otz says it's on him for not choosing to end the game early.

Can confirm, stuff like this is why I'm never able to stick with DBD as a game. I really like the asymmetrical format, but playing killer is just intensely frustrating when every mistake you make can cost you the game, but every mistake the survivors make gets a second, third, or fourth chance to save it. That would be tilting enough in a 1v1 game - in a 1v4 game like DBD it's just frankly unplayable.

That game plus a lot of accumulation of small things like survivors sweatting and the fact that I was going againts survivor with 4k+ hours that knew the game way better than me, came to the fact that I wasn't enjoying the game anymore... and I know a lot of my friends stopped playing for the same reasons as well.

I like some of your content and think you're awesome BUT I have a rebuttle for you.. how many people quit playing dbd that are newer because they get tunnelled off hook to death at 5/4 gens? I know there is ALOT. You have influence and haven't helped this - I've had people in endgame chat say that you said it was okay and the most optimal way to play is to get a surv out of the match asap - so it's fine because you advised it. I've had this said to me and friends of mine more than once. I personally don't care if I live or die ASLONG as I had fun - it's a casual game, please stop saying things like this to make it comp. It should be about fun no matter what (I play killer aswell as surv so not surv sided) literally can get multiple games in a row where somebody just doesn't get to play - this is even with people taking hits, even going down to try get the killers attention away but they just slug to keep going for the tunnel. People have literally said they felt they couldn't play dbd anymore as they literally just couldn't play the game due to this sort of stuff. I beg you to remember the influence you have and keep in mind the health of the game and that it's just a casual game to have fun. ❤️
@cathattack9 ай бұрын
To make it even worse - imagine if unfortunately that same person doesn't get to play many matches in a row because they're tunnelled off spawn to death. This absolutely happens, I've had it happen to me and friends of mine - some of which quit due to it (due to reason I stated) killers also have "stupid perks" too btw.. and once again, it's a casual game - if everybody felt /played like it was the game would be so so much healthier :( - as right now, it's absolutely horrendous. Survs absolutely add to this but I see it MUCH more so from killers (from playing both sides) so please spread better messages - not things like get someone out of the match asap. ❤

I know this will probably be a hot take but I actually think unlike a lot of other games there is a pretty diminished return on reaching 10k hours in dbd compared to something like sc2 or league. By like 1k hours if you are really good at games in general or have comp exp in other games, you're probably performing at mostly the highest levels besides some niche knowledge. That niche knowledge might be the diff in comp games but in pubs it would be very hard to distinguish.

I have this Huntress game in the back of my mind every time I remember a frustrating game. I saw 3 flashlights in the lobby but I didn't want to switch to Lightborn and I regretted it later on. For every down I got, and despite looking to a wall, these survivors were so good at getting an insane angle to get the rescue. I wasn't even mad at them, they played very well. But that doesn't take away the frustration of not being able to hook anybody despite having multiple downs and avoiding the flashlights by looking at trees or walls.

"Just run lightborn." Yeah? Why does killer lose an entire perk slot just so the game is playable?
@vradarx9 ай бұрын
Games perfectly playable but when you come up against tryhards then you have to match it or you won't have fun. It costs survivors perk slots and items to have the potential of saving people and the items run out, you're complaining about one perk to make you permanently IMMUNE to flashy saves which is 90% of saves because most don't even sabo it might not be fun to run but it's not a big sacrifice at all.
@felipexvz9 ай бұрын
It's called meta. If something is bothering you so much you can't enjoy the game and you have a tool to counter it, use it. Survivors use distortion to counter aura reading. They use OTR/DS to counter tunneling. Reassurance to counter camping. So either you feel you can win without using Lightborn/Blood favour to counter saves or they happen so rarely that it just doesn't make a real difference in the end.

Otz sorry but sometimes you really annoy me. Id rather have stuff like background player stay in the game, so you at least have some tools to the stupid nurse/blight meta stuff thats going on. But what really annoys me is you really show a very one sided picture as of lately. Always its the background player players, always its the "bad survivors using uncounterable things" but thats not what dbd is currently. Go against a nurse with a meta build and youll have a totally different picture. Both side have those things but i feel like theres so many killer mains coming here to these videos lately just to hate on "op stuff" from survivors. Feels like im looking at steam forums lately and it does worry me. I really hope the game gets more fun, but if they just nerf background player and keep the pain res making you do 6 gens, then slap on pop and grim embrace/dms... hows that counterable? But ive never heard you whine about that, or make videos on it, and thats what your fans are going to see and shout out too. Its kinda sad honestly :/ Sorry for the rant but this really shows more and more and i kinda miss the old otz tbh. I get it but yea...

Yeah, matches like that are real rough. It is frustrating that for all of the changes, even the ones I agree with, that they've made to try and make the survivor experience better like removing hook grabs, the new UI, the face camping meter, the multiple reworks to spawn logic trying to fix 3 gens and then adding the regression cap on top of that, they haven't done a lot to try and address the frustration that killer players sometimes face in matches like this one.
