Scott Foster, You are so correct, this amazing animal doesn't get the recognition it so deserves, it's the only mammal that can completely alter the landscape without destroying it, people can't or won't, there's no profit in a pristine wilderness, these animals would absolutely save the world from drought in if humans would wake the fuck up and allow them to just be beavers

One beaver( Castor canadensis) is great, but it can take two to raise a family. Witnessing a bank lodge beaver in Yankton, SD. I personally gleaned year- long exposure to a family, who I witnessed feed, nurse, and on occasions witness the pair together as busy as a family can be. Feeding on Fremont cottonwoods while simultaneously nursing her kits sounding like babies naturally. I saw her come in nervously with limb, she seemed good with me, submerged, mysteriously entered lodge and heard the action. Not only did they always capture my attention, I learned to fish from nearby woody structure, Spring bringing them into spawn. All aspects of their lifestyles seemed keenly suited for this family life, where local shores, deciduous sprout shooting trees are aided in some forms of propagation by the beavers also. Wood ducks ( Aix sponsa ) had a local cavity nest in an accompanying cottonwood stand and another local resident. Finding cavities can be a test for this Native bird. Beavers in this area store woody forage materials under the ice for winter, they stimulate shoot formation, and all this woody debris is sustenance for the myriad of Mayflies hatching, cottonwood silk, and all those tangible memories. Point being, caves, alcoves, large stumps, can be used as strata for living arrangements of Beaver family including a beaver lodge or bank style which could be a cave, underlying roots of large trees, or other bank habitat that allows for escape cover, deeper water column for escape and survival purposes.

Most people couldn't care less about the environment returning to normal. If you want to get people to care, you have to sell them on how this will help them. You might want to tell people that the water table is raised after beavers fix the area. Raising the water table makes more water available for people to use.

Wolves weren't reintroduced to Michigan. Wisconsin and Michigan are about the only places in the contiguous United States where wolves weren't exterminated. Wolves have been reintroduced to Wyoming and have spread from there all the way to Washington, Oregon and Colorado. The Mexican subspecies of wolf has been reintroduced to Arizona, New Mexico and Chihuahua. The Mexican Wolf had been hunted down to only 6 animals and survived only through breeding in zoos and reintroduction. Red wolves were almost made extinct. The last few were captured, bread in zoos and released into the wild. If not reintroduced they would be extinct. The last plains bison in the United States and the last wood bison in Canada were down to one herd each. If not for human intervention to protect and reintroduce them, we probably wouldn't have them now. The last 27 California condors we're captured, bread in zoos and reintroduced to the wild. We broke the system so it is up to us to fix it.

Corporate "factory" farming practices would seem to be those that are truly the most destructive. I believe I would have far more confidence in the true *family farmers* of today who are have far more of a connection to the land that they benefit from and would tend to be better stewards of it, than a bunch of greedy shareholders and board members expecting big fat dividends above all else.

Beavers often create their own habitat. If they build their dams with sagebrush, this will impound water. This water will support willows, cottonwoods, aspen and cattails. These plants colonize quickly and are favored food for beavers. What you see as cruel, the beavers see as opportunity.
