REJECTED: My Frustrating LEGO Ambassador Network Application Experience

In this video, I discuss my experience applying for the LEGO Ambassador Network and being rejected not only once, but twice. While being rejected is always frustrating, it is the reasons for rejection and being led on to believe I would be accepted AND having to wait nearly a year that got me to the point where I felt the need to tell my story. It's a story of disorganization within the LAN from Kim Thomsen initially giving me hope, to him getting fired, to Jordan Paxton coming in as the new Engagement Manager and finally ending my journey on a reason that is clearly wrong as a argued, but still stands. I hope this helps someone in their decision to apply for the LAN and whether it is worth it for you.

Greg, you are an amazing content creator and an inspiration to so many folks. The community you built speaks for itself. And the interactions you have with other AFOLs and fans far exceed what you will get from LAN. You have all that pride to stand on. I’m not sure what else the LAN would provide to you. Keep being you and doing what you love and we will be here watching and supporting and applauding you!

What I like about your channel is that by featuring you and Clark, you are able to see two demographics talk about the same things and see how those two demographics view them. It’s an AFOL interacting with a kid. It in a way bridges the Kid community and the AFOL community. You are then able to share the perspective you learn from Clark in your discussions with other AFOLs on Brick and Bits. It is part of the reason I love your channel and Bricks and Bits. So I would say you definitely have interactions with the AFOL community.

I think your assessment of what they did is exactly right. I think at most they looked at your home page. Buried in my rejection letter was a sentence that if I focused less on Bricklink it would help because that blurs customers and community. What I took from that is - I guess it’s ok to be sponsored in every video by BrickMania. My home page had a Bricklink tutorial playlist near the top and my pinned video was my joy at celebrating BrickLinks 20th anniversary. So how is supporting a business owned by LEGO viewed more negatively than directly promoting a LEGO competitor in every single video? So in conclusion - I think both you and I were given a 30 second look by a group of people that have no concept of who we are. I’ve still never directly spoken to a LEGO community person (outside email responses to rejection letters) that wasn’t named Kevin Hinkle. In the end I guess it makes better this way but dang it I wanted to get that duck 🦆

I think they wronged you and not brickitect, he tried to make fake drama multiple times me as adult I am disgusted by it personally even though he makes good content in other videos, it makes everything he says after it not honest and not sincere. Secondly good portion of his thumbnails are not for adults from Clark with his finger in his nose to greg doing silly and cartoony faces, same with names of videos outside of missing pieces, but he made that childish also by putting Clark in twice. He also makes childish phrases like demonized, jeep life, it's brickitect video and makes childish voice when he speaks that is for younger kids and doesn't do reviews or something professional or something business lego related so you learn something from him he is making a journey with his son videos. His arguments are that youtube analytics are older people when you can't make account unless you put that you are 18. Second argument is that he is in afol community cause he is on mandr podcast, people watch that podcast mostly for j2g and mandr that doesn't mean afol care about his opinions. I can join podcast with Patrick Mahomes people would watch it for him not me. Doesn't mean NFL fans care about my opinion. He makes great content about him and his son, but he for sure isn't influencing lego afol community, maybe few older people with kids but he isn't influencing them, their children are nagging him to get it. He isn't showing lego products in their true life or form he just does something random and unprofessional and that's okay some people love that but person that wants that has interest in set has to watch other people to see features and figures from set. Just imagine you a business man and a father to try to pick a fake drama fight with some younger youtuber for attention or to put yourself picking a nose or doing silly faces in thumbnail or repeating same phrases like you are in cartoon network cartoon and expecting anyone to take you seriously.

Wow BrickTsar that is very sad they said to not focus as much on Bricklink when they own it now. The LEGO LAN reviewers are stuck in the past and don’t understand times are changing in what ‘AFOLs’ want to watch, and don’t know what LEGO actually owns.

My theory is that Brickitect and BrickTsar did not get in because of their age. Out of all the biggest Lego youtube content creators that I am aware of it seems that the ones who are in the LAN are on the younger side of the AFOL community. I do not think this is because older AFOLS are not applying to the LAN.

Any of your loyal fans know your videos have a very diverse audience and anyone who clicks on them can see how people of any age can enjoy them. It also frustrates ME knowing full well that you have probably given LEGO thousands of free advertising and patronage! I respect you so much for not just complaining that you won’t get free LEGO (like Brick Queen) but for giving us your full experience and what you can understand about their decision, and just using this as a place to share your experience. I sense a new LEGO movement on the horizon. Greg, your channel has been an amazing lego resource. I got into the lego side of KZbin specifically because of YOUR channel. I was recommended an episode of missing pieces because my brothers watched a Hidden Side short on my account. A short while later I posted a review on Apple Podcasts, which you replied to WITHIN A WEEK. I was completely flabbergasted that someone with so many subscribers took the time to read through reviews and comments on such a personal level and as regularly as you do. Your dedication to the lego space has been amazing. Your channel introduced me to Ryan, to Just2good, to Ashnflash, and even to Jang!! I wouldn’t have even considered watching these guys, some of whom are IN LAN mind you, if it weren’t for you and if that doesn’t speak to your involvement in the community I don’t know what does. My friend, I understand your frustration and I just want to say that I believe this amazing community you’ve built has a choice to make. As fans of Lego, as supporters even, of this company, we have some leverage in the sense that we have the power to show them what it is we want. Ryan did an amazing job of showing this with the 501st movement (which I am still amazed by). You regularly tell us that we’re able to vote with our wallets, but I want to raise you and say that we have a voice. It doesn’t sit well with me to know that Lego at times is inconsistent as a company. They claim to listen to fans but regularly show us the contrary (stupid dioramas instead of mini figure promos for May the 4th as an example) and in your case, claim to reject you for a specific reason that you’ve proven to be untrue. There are a lot of adults here. I’m sure a few of them have taken the time to read this. And I’m more than positive your fan base is active enough to help get you to a position you deserve to be in because of the time and care you’ve put into growing this community and the image of the Lego group as a whole. We want Brickitect in LAN.

Hey Greg, I really feel bad that you weren’t able to take part in every LEGO fan’s dream - being part of the ambassador network. It’s sad to see that they rejected you because you’re sharing your experiences with Clark. You defiantly provide a more unique type of content to the lego community as a whole with your father-son dynamic. It must’ve been really frustrating to wait more than half a year, just to be rejected a second time. I hope that in the future that Lego will accept you into their network as I know that money doesn’t come easy, and that the few sets that will come your way will allow you to take part in your hobby. As an AFOL, I love your content, and wish you well for the future :)

This sucks. I am a 34 year old AFOL from the UK and started watching your Bricktect channel a few years back when I re found my love for Lego, especially Minifigs. I have a four year old son and a two year old daughter who are both starting to get into Lego. I watch your videos which gives honest reviews on Lego sets and I think if Gregg loves this set then I will too, if Clark loves this set then my son would too. I watch your videos as much as I can in between work and family time and they help me chill out after a crappy day at work and just make me want to build and expand my collection. So I just want to say Thank You for that. If you apply again, I really hope it gets accepted. Your channel is an inspiration to us big kids to help us enjoy Lego as it should be enjoyed and not just as collectables. I play with Lego with my kids on a daily basis and think your channel has helped me to do this. Keep up the good work and fingers crossed for the future applications if you do re apply. Thanks. As someone who definitely wants to be a LEGO Ambassador one day, it's very disappointing to hear just how much of a case-by-case basis being accepted is. I'm sorry that you were rejected twice - I just discovered your channel but it's quite clear that children aren't your primary audience, and I agree that having a kid looking at the same set can completely change your perspective. For the most part, I agree with everything you said in this video. As a college student without kids, sometimes I find that parts of your videos are guided towards kids and/or people with kids. This isn't to say that I don't enjoy those parts of the videos, it's just that I can't relate as much as other people. For the relatively short time I have been watching your videos, I have loved it. I understand why the LAN program may have thought that those parts of the videos are for kids, but I disagree with them. You make your reviews based on your personal experience, and I truly appreciate that. Please don't think that I'm trying to be rude. You don't need to be apart of the LAN to continue to grow and create great content. Thank you for the hours of content you have created! Good luck with everything you do!

Greg...right there with you man! After listening to you and other Lego KZbinrs and AFOL's who have been rejected recently...it seems as if the LEGO group's criteria from which they choose Ambassadors doesn't recognize the true essence of the AFOL community and of the diverse interests in which it encompasses. You know as well as I do and the hundreds of other Lego KZbinrs and AFOL content creators on other platforms the kinds of comments, emails and discussions that we get on a daily basis that go WAY BEYOND than the plastic brick. WAY BEYOND simply building. WAY BEYOND simply learning tips and techniques. What this brilliant brick system that Lego has created means to people is so far beyond the mere parameters of what the Lego Group's LAN program evidently recognizes. What it seems to not recognize (at least evidenced from what I read, see, and hear in these letters and videos from folks like yourself who have been rejected) is what being a meaningful representative, ambassador, or evangelist of LEGO truly means. I'm sure the Lego Group knows the human effect that their product has on people. They are a smart bunch of folks who care about the world more-so than most corporations. The humanity that Lego speaks to is not just numbers of people that buy product though - that's good for short term profits yes - but it speaks to people's hearts and souls which all the quantitative data in the world cannot measure but which is ultimately what sustains the long tail of any business. What you do. What I do. What BrickTsar and hundreds of other Lego KZbinrs do and thousands of AFOLS around the world do speaks to people's souls. It speaks to their hearts. Human to Human not brick to brick or set to set. We are not in this to just play with toys. We are not in this to have cool pieces of plastic gather dust on our shelves. We are in this to be truly human. Communicating, sharing, bonding, experiencing, and being truly human. We simply choose Lego to do this with rather than something else. I posted a video on my channel recently about how Lego literally saved my life 2 years ago. It wasn't because it was about a particular Lego product or set...it was because of people like you who show everyday the humanity of the people BEHIND the brick. Not the brick itself. This may be a hard pill to swallow for some but it is why throughout history there have been brands and products that have resonated with people as being equally human in spirit. Lego has been one of those brands and products. It's the spirit that the product conveys. The humanity and the creativity of the product that bonds others, I'd contend, is what has catapulted their products for decades. To shut out the very people, like yourself who are helping their brand and product to continue to effect humanity in new and creative ways (content creation, platforms, etc...) seems a rather odd strategy. I love LEGO and always will. Great product. Fantastic and I'll always be an evangelist for it. But I sure do love what it stands for more than any individual product that they produce. That's the good stuff. The stuff that comes from the heart and soul of users. Keep doing what you do man and keep bringing it from your soul.

I’m an AFOL with no kids and I adore your channel. You give great tips and the interaction with Clark is a nice change of pace from other channels. You both bring great energy that gets me excited about building and helps me decide what sets to build next. You very much come across as a “normal” adult with a life outside of Lego, but you have a passion for Lego … and so many channels come across as their life revolves around Lego. What I’m trying to say is you’re more relatable than other channels. I know some people in my life think I’m a bit odd for building Lego at my age, but your channel makes me feel less odd and more like it’s just another hobby (one most people in my life don’t have). I am regularly watching your video's. I don't own any LEGO but I think it's a great product and I enjoy the positivity of your video's. As a marketing consultant I regularly help charities think how they can work with ambassadors and I was intrigued by your video. I want to add a few thoughts to the discussion. 1) First of all, I can imagine how you feel right now. For years you have been sharing your passion for LEGO with a growing group of subscribers. Right now more than 100.000 people have subscribed to your channel. What Lego is effectively communicating to you is: you don't matter to us. ("we cannot recognize your community") Even if LEGO believes that there are legitimate reasons why you can't be part of the network, they could send a message how they appreciate how you go out of your way to help them promote their product. I just can't believe the tone of voice of the emails and the messages they are sending. They are missing such a big opportunity to value their fans. 2) They are hiding behind 'rules and regulations'. You would appreciate more human interaction. None of the emails indicate any appreciation for what you are doing, but they keep underlining what in their mind you can't do, such as the use of the minifig in your logo. How different would it be if they would simply state that they would appreciate all you are doing and how they love your and Clark's passion for Lego and clearly show that they have watched some of your video's. 3) If they have a department focusing on family and kids engagement, why can't they refer you to them??? 4) Contrary to what Lego is saying, you are an ambassador for them. 5) I simply do not understand how LEGO is not building a relationship with you. If they would email you occasionally showing support, encouraging you rather than discouraging you, that would go a long way. Even if they would only once send you a free set with a nice thank you note, you would make a whole different video! Why don't the community managers at LEGO understand that? Is LEGO really about building community? Greg, as your channel grows and more and more people subscribe, there will come a day when LEGO will be begging your to be part of the network!

Oh man, that totally sucks. I'm not quite sure how you kept that calm!!! As a member of the AFOL community I can wholeheartedly say you target that demographic! As for your style, I am so glad you present your content in the way you do. I've been there at times thinking that sets aren't that great, but seeing Clarkman's reaction totally changed my thinking and have bought sets for Wee DJ based on that! I don't know if you consider yourself as an 'Influencer' or not, but I would certainly hold your opinion on a set (as a fellow LEGO Dad) , even though you don't really do formal reviews, in the highest respect. Chin up and I hope their decision doesn't have a negative effect on your passion for the plastic brick! This decision (again) is the LEGO groups loss!

I totally agree what you said about you and Clark showing how it goes full circle. When you are an adult you try to get your kids to play with toys. You choose toys that you loved as a kid so that they can hopefully experience the same joys that you did as a kid but now you can both experience them. I thought that you handled the situation extremely professionally. As I am sure you wanted to say some things about LAN that you didn’t in the video. But instead you made the best out of the situation and provided us with great insight into the situation. You also didn’t complain about not being able to get free sets from LEGO. You really seemed to not really care about the free perks and more about the missed opportunity to be apart of something. Something that would give you a opportunity to have a larger voice in helping grow the community. I think that you were right in that they breezed over your channel after seeing your thumbnails.

You know, I was considering joining the LEGO Ambassador Network, but after this whole debacle, and the way they handled your situation, I’m not really interested in applying anymore. Plus with my channel, covering leaks and leaked information wouldn’t be allowed, which would take the fun out of uncovering new LEGO content for me. It would be cool to receive free review copies of sets, and to engage with other AFOLs, but honestly it doesn’t seem worth it with you being rejected twice. I am a younger AFOL, I think I’ll stick with my channel and I’ll make the content that I want to, and not have to follow guidelines, that seems really restricting. I may do a video regarding this topic, that could be interesting. Thank you for sharing your experience, and for being honest, Greg. It is truly amazing to have such a real LEGO family on KZbin, and not fakers who want views and subscribers. Hey Greg. I'm a new subscriber and havn't commented before, but I like your content. I like the fact your channel is different from other Lego review channels. Honestly I think you’re one of the only channels the SHOULD be in the LAN. It is clear to see that you and Clarkman truly love LEGO and that’s why you made this channel, to share that love. These are the types of channels that LAN should be looking for, not necessarily just the ones with the biggest reach, but even in that case you now have over 100k subs. Honestly Greg I dunno, I’m just as baffled as you are.

Hi Greg, sorry to hear your application rejected. You bring a lot of heart and energy into your videos and as you rightly said the father and son combination get to the core of Lego as a hobby. It really makes no sense that they're looking for AFOL exclusive channels, when one of the best Lego channels around gets rejected. Don't feel too down on this or take it too personal - reapply later in six months or a year. They probably don't know about the channel and need another look into it.

Honestly I think it would have been an amazing opportunity for them to accept you. In their eyes you’re a different type of KZbinr that they haven’t had the experience with in the lan and like you said with the demographic of your videos, it proves that the videos aren’t just for kids. I’m 17 and I have been watching the channel for like 4 or 5 years now and I never thought of it as a “kids” KZbin channel like Ryan’s toy reviews but I think the people in charge of everything really just looked at the thumbnails and just based their choice off of that. Having Clark in your videos could be a good chance for something some what new in a way with having the same demographic but also bringing some of the younger audience at the same time which I personally haven’t seen that much of in the LEGO community which is what I think makes you different than other LEGO KZbinrs in an amazing way.

Thank you for proving that even people in their late teens through adulthood can enjoy and play with lego. Clark is always a blast to watch, but thank you for even on your own nearly always being excited and enthusiastic about lego, even at times like this when you feel frustrated about it, whether it be a bad set or a declined request.

Its definitely the turmoil of management change. It may be that each reviewer sees your application from a different perspective. What I think you should do.... 1. Separate the vlog style to a separate channel... the main channel could be all lego related. Daily or semi-daily content to the vlog. 2 or 3 videos per week for the main channel. 2. Have a build and review channel dedicated to just that. Nothing more nothing less. Weekly or Bi-weekly content here. 3. Have a MOC channel that could be DIRECTLY TARGETED for AFOLs. Call the channel AFOb ( A Fan Of brickitect ). Where the content here is more podcast based with community members. A separate website for this could also bring more retained viewership and loyal followers. If you are into spreadsheets you can easily create apps for you users to better engage with your content - as diverse as it is. GlideApps use Google Sheets to easily create apps. The app system could centralize everything into one place, making it easier to see everything, but still keep it separate. The reviewers may see your channel and community base as too cluttered - but with some good separation of projects/videos that can easily be corrected. Keep up the good work!

I genuinely feel bad for you and I do agree with what you said about them (potentially) glancing at your channel and generalizing it as a kids channel, solely through your thumbnails. While you are on a podcast with and regularly hosting live-streams alongside other (and well known) Afol’s, these are not on your main channel and it could be that you don’t interact with other Afols on your Brickitect channel. That’s the only other angle they could swing their words but it doesn’t hold much ground unless they mean you to apply to the L.A.N. as your channel and not as an individual. Great video by the way!

Hey Greg, I’m not too familiar with your solo channel but as my favorite voice from the Bricks and Bits podcast, believe you deserve to be in LAN just for your sole contribution to that podcast. To be just shy of 100 episodes deep with that (not sure exactly when you joined the podcast), giving your unique input with your son (especially at the point in my life where kids aren’t coming soon, but aspiring to share that LEGO experience with my future kid(s) like you), and trading your thoughts on a weekly basis with two other guys ALREADY IN LAN, there’s no doubt in my mind you should be accepted. I’m not sure if LAN weighted you contributions to the podcast heavily, and I know that’s not necessarily your identity as a LEGO influencer, but maybe that’s an extra avenue of consideration you can highlight to LAN. Best of luck Greg and no matter what I look forward to all your content to come!

Hey man...sorry to hear about your rejection to the LAN. I feel like you really do bring something unique and valuable to the LEGO community, sharing your and Clark's LEGO journey. I wonder if you might not be on to something about the LAN not fully understanding what your channel is. I have to admit, while I'm now a regular viewer, I wasn't sold initially. I heard of your channel on Bricks & Bits and decided to check it out couple years ago maybe? The first video I watched Clark was particularly on the Octan that day and I wondered if your channel was going to be for me. That said, I'm glad I stuck with it because now I truly appreciate the unique content you bring. I understand your response to the rejection and how disappointing that is. Stick with it Greg, I think the LAN is a good thing to be involved in. I think the rejection is frustrating but I would look on it positively in that they are very stringent on who they admit which keeps the LAN exclusive as it should be. I am not sure why they are pushing AFOL though, why can't someone be an ambassador for Lego if they are focused on Lego's core product demographic (kids)? That doesn't make sense. Also your KZbin stats prove otherwise anyway. Very odd. I would though be mindful that no one should feel entitled to have something. So try to stay humble. Keep growing your channel and try again with another application later in the year. You don't have anything to lose and a lot to gain. Anyway all the best from your UK 🇬🇧 fans.

Hey Greg, sucks they didn't approve you for LAN. I'm 42 and my daughter is almost 5. We both love your channel. Sounds like a excuse they gave you. Chillllllllll, Greg. What I don’t get is how a youtuber who has hella subs is mad about not getting free LEGO. I don’t,if the millions of people who love and enjoy LEGO only a few people get free LEGO so don’t complain you already have a lot of LEGO so chill. I don’t have many sets I have a few bins of legos from my uncle when he was a kid but look you have a lot of money my family has not a lot of money and my mom is working on the front lines saving lives, and risking my life and my sisters life. Be GRATEFUL for what you have I’m betting almost anyone in the world would trade places with you so don’t complain about not getting free LEGO when you already have so much. It’s hard to watch your videos when you spoil your kid and complain about something small. If I were you I would rethink what you said in this video

I’ve never seen a Better kid not being closed to spoiled. It’s sad seeing people getting mad over another mans hard earning money being put into a great use making his family happy. He’s not even going for the free LEGO, he wants to be apart of something he loves like anyone else would you sound dumb and very childish, sad. And you know that your whole explanation is garbage cause you get all personal. Hopeful you learn something from this comment and go hate on someone else cause obviously it’s “hard” to watch this video.🙄

I think you're exaggerating his reaction to the LAN rejection letter. Greg expressing his frustration at this does not equal being ungrateful for what he has or for essential workers like your mom. He and anyone has a right to express themselves and complain about anything even small things, it doesn't mean they hate their life. I am frustrated about mosquito bites. If I complain about it, it doesn't mean I don't appreciate your mom being an essential worker or other good things I have. I can still appreciate your mom's amazing work while complaining about mosquito bites. I'm sorry you don't have a lot of Lego. When you grow up and get a good job, you will be able to get more. In the meantime, you can either be supportive of Greg&Clark and their success, or choose to unsubscribe if his good fortune makes you feel unhappy.

In my opinion any of the videos that you make with Clark are pure baby material. Big click baity titles and a focus more on the vlog/haul aspect and less on the technical aspect. Nothing is wrong with being a kids channel but as a 19 year old LEGO fan I don’t see many people my age or older just watching a young kid and his dad shopping for legos and being entertained by it. It’s also important to remember that the KZbin analytics are likely vastly skewed as children rarely have their own KZbin account. It’s pretty likely they just use their parents account that is always logged in on the iPad. I don’t mean any of this to be offensive but you asked for my opinion so I thought I’d share. Good channel regardless man and I respect the grind, don’t let this get you down you don’t need their approval

Keep it up, follow your passion. I’d say I can see Lego’s point slightly vs other channels but you are right as well. My kids and Jang, Ryan got me out of dark ages and I appreciate your different style. Think where the other channels have an edge over acceptance is not only doing fun videos or engagement they do have a review focus which I’m sure they want. I think you have made a lot of valid points, and I see your frustration. You were told what was needed to gain entry into the LAN, and you met that criteria but were still denied. I think you have presented your case well to Lego, but they are sticking to their guns, the weak little stud shooter variety... I think you are in the right and if they are unwilling to hear you out and actually listen, then admission to the LAN is solely based on subjective reasons and not the outlined ones they are supposed to abide by. They have latched onto one reason for denial, and they can’t even admit they are wrong.I don’t blame you for not wanting to pursue it again. I commend you for calling them out, but it doesn’t seem like they care unfortunately. I think they are the ones who will be missing out in the end. I think you know your worth, and many others, 100k of them have high praise of you. 100,000+ > 8 LAN jerks..

Now that my son is 5 yrs old and many LEGO sets later We continue to enjoy your videos and my son really enjoys your LEGO Minecraft videos with Clark so I’m sure we’ll start collecting for that soon to. Sorry to hear you didn’t get accepted to the LAN LEGO is totally making a big mistake I get the whole logo issue but you were willing to change it why I don’t get is there reasoning with Clark man after all Legos we’re made mostly for kids at it’s early history and I’m pretty sure the majority of sets still are . Keep pumping out those videos in the end what matters most is your own relationship with your son and the fun times you spend building and collecting together thanks again for your content take care .
