Also, being a Muslim nation now Metal music really isn't embraced or accepted as any kind of norm, there have been several metal musicians native to countries in the region who have been killed because of it or imprisoned on basically heresy charges. It isn't safe for them to play there. Slayer had some problems even back when they recorded Seasons in the Abyss in the region, they had a pretty substantial production team and a lot of security around them to keep them safe for the short time they were there, but still isn't nearly as dangerous as it is right now in the country.

In the past 10-15 years I've become a lot more selective about my music. Back then, I just went for the most brutal and more importantly, the most obscure things I could find. The more my internet forum echochambers proclaimed "this is more brutal!" the more interested I was. Anything on the level of popularity of Nile was quickly abandonend. Lo and behold 15 years later, what stuck around? Nile. I haven't listened to this album in at least a year or two but the riffs are still fresh in my mind. The "brutality" is comparable if not better than whaterver shit Unique Leader band I was into at the time. The opening riff of Sacrifice Unto Sebek is burned into my brain and there it shall stay.

On Myspace, Nile ran a draw to see who would attend the Master Class given by Karl Saunders before the Concert in Cleveland. I was one of the winners, met the band and took the lesson. Then saw the soundcheck with back stage passes. I had made a King Tut themed flying V using Warmoth components, gold leafed with 24kt gold. I had stayed up all night to be ready and then asked Dallas if he wanted to use my King Tut Guitar for soundcheck. He realized I didnt tune the lowest string to D from E and handed it back. I was so close to hearing my guitar play this albums music, but he posed for photos with it after the check. Then we watched this albums concert.

I don't know if this is my favorite death metal album but it's definitely my most revisited. It manages to be blisteringly fast, bludgeoningly brutal and dizzingly technical while staying CATCHY. Not an easy feat, hats off to these mythological lads.

One of the greatest death metal albums of all time for sure! top 5 for me.

@@dimifisher7942 Entombed has one good record. Two ok ones, and the rest are god awful. Get past you introductory knowledge of Death metal. Entombed isn't even in the top ten Death metal bands. You have no idea what you're talking about

FUCKING INSANE. Cast Down The Heretic, Lashed To The Slave Stick, Von Unaussprechlichen Kulten are the best songs of the album IMO.

Bolt Thrower's name is far less known these days that it was 20 years ago, yet other bands from the same era are more known these days than Bolt Thrower is. I've mentioned their name to many people who listen to death metal yet have never heard of them.

I remember hearing about some Egypt based death metal band and thinking haha. But then I was at some show where they opened and was completely blown away. I can’t even remember who I was there to see. I just remember Nile.

17 (!) years later and I don't think Nile will ever realistically top this. That's not to say that continuing on is pointless. In fact, I dont think they're expected to, at least not in my mind. How do you top this ? You don't. You just keep churning out bloodcurdling, sick and crushing stuff year after year that is arguably head and shoulders above the rest.. Some time has passed and they've released some really phenomenal stuff, I love it all.

Shout out to Neil Kernon's excellent production on this album. Visceral yet hugely atmospheric. Apparently they didn't even EQ the guitars! Drums really natural as well and not compressed to shit like so much other technical DM. A huge part of that is down to Kollias' technique, of course, but Neil really captured a moment on this album.

17:10 you can pinpoint the moment at which an ancient mummy explodes at the chest, hundreds of feet below the earth in the catacombs of a pyramid, unleashing a whirlwind of scarabs to wipe out all those who ran and hid from sacrificing blood and sweat so the ancient gods may save our world from the horrors of modern man

I would say in their darkened shrines has some pretty technical drumming while annihilation of the wicked has very advanced guitar work, not that either isn't proficient at both!

Busted 2 headphones on his album. For me a band which changed Metal is Death. So for me that is the greatest moment which I thought will be over. Then Nile came and took over. I been listening to Metal since the 80's. So let's see who can take it up a notch. As for now, I don't see anything as good as Death & Nile.
