MYRKUR (Amalie Bruun) returns with her highly anticipated new album, Spine! The new album is a tour-de-force, amalgamating some of the most exciting, innovative, and genre-defying moments from MYRKUR's catalog into something that is haunting, extreme, and brilliant as ever. Spine lays MYRKUR bare, at her most raw and unwavering, and is undoubtedly one of the year's most ambitious and cinematic albums. Spine relates to MYRKUR's personal mythology. Written during one of the most difficult times in Amalie Bruun's life - Spine is the direct result of her experiences following child birth. From the love and euphoria that comes with motherhood, to the fears of the unknown and the mysteries of the journey ahead, Spine is ultimately an album about seeking balance amidst chaos. To Bruun/MYRKUR, the record explores the very human nature of what it means to be a mother, and finds resonances with Scandinavian mythology to do so. Recorded with Randall Dunn at the Sundlaughin Studio in Iceland (Sigur Rós) - the ebbs and flows in Spine reflect the width and breadth of MYRKUR's emotion. These sonic shifts are represented in music that sees MYRKUR touch upon an array of influences - from undeniable metal as heard on the inimitable "Valkyriernes Sang", to darker sonic territories inspired by folk and haunting vocal passages on "Like Humans''. Elsewhere, the brooding "Mothlike" showcases a new side of MYRKUR's sensibilities, with touches of electronic underpinnings and lush synth orchestrations. Spine's title track proves to be one of the most moving songs of the year, as it transcends through moments of affable, delicate vocal, percussive, and string arrangements to a massive chorus that serves as a thesis statement for the rest of the album. MYRKUR's euphoric outlook is in full display here, as the song proclaims, "My body made your spine / You and I intertwine / You made me human / Stay with me / You will be / The one I love the most". With Spine, MYRKUR unravels the next chapter in the personal mythology of Amalie Bruun, and sets a new course for the enigmatic band.

I don't understand why people continues to talk about this album as something so far away from the first albums. Of course this is not properly a black metal album, but with no doubts in few parts you can hear black metal influences in her own style, and "heavy moments", togheter with folk, new age, and maybe more, creating something unique and perfect. I think she has been able to change in better, but still being coerent with herself and with what she have done until now. Maybe now she going to be softer, who cares? This album it's gold.

these new songs about motherhood are not things I can relate to or songs id normally listen to, but spine + menneskebarn are so sweet. amalie seems like a very good mother, the songs about her children are very pure. this is certainly different from the metal stuff of the past, and though i resonated more with that, i understand that as her life changes her sound will follow.
@franlovelsimic8421 Жыл бұрын
They really do sound pure, agree! Fun fact, her child is with Keith Abrani who is one of the best modern death metal drummers. He plays for Artificial Brain, highly recommend it, they do be extreme so be ready for some burping. Still, the song "Floating In Delirium" is a classic for me so check em out if you wish, peace!

I've never met a dragon. Somehow I manage to appreciate art - books, video games, film, etc - with dragons it. Plenty of menfolk are too. Yet something funny happens when art contains a gendered component. Plenty of men suddenly become unable to "relate" to the subject on a human level. It is nothing but naked sexism, born of the neuroses inherent in masculinity

Just watched the SummerBreeze 2024 live performance and was pretty intrigued... i like the evolution the sound is going through, even if i prefer the older more "raw" stuff... i think if in the future the songs expand a little more, keep the beautiful and haunting melodies and just go a tiny step more forward with the black metal elements, we cluld have some MONUMENTAL music ahead of us. Kudos, what a ballsy project.

I don't think that this is as good an album as Folkesange or even ragnarock the musical. But I see why people like it. It's clearly a very personal thing and I think that's why it misses the mark to me. I'm sure if I was a newly made mother this would appeal to me a lot more. Anyway keep up the great work Amalie, you are truly a danish national treasure

So, you´re saying you have to be a mother to appreciate this album? Next, you´re gonna tell me you have to be a serial killer to appreciate Cannibal Corpse? Look, you don´t like this album, and that´s fine, you don´t need excuses to not like it. I´m not a mother or a father, should i also dislike it just because it has one or two songs about motherhood? That´s dumb...
@rudolfhess315310 ай бұрын
@@mindtraveller100I didn't say any of that. I said that if you are a new mother, this song would probably be extra special to you, since that's the theme of the entire album. I didn't know you were a movie theater, with that amount of projection you must be

First of all I like this album, it entered my playlist. All I'll write next is to support creator with listening experience of musically educated reciever, not to diminish incredible work and talent put into production, only to point some spheres where something could be done differently IMO. I accept black metal as part of expression language in this beauty while I am not BM fan - that's meaningfull and promising.. What I would reconsider here is timing in metal band parts couse of the feeling of chaos in crucial moments that destabilizes the experience. By chaos I mean different timing between parts of percussion instruments, between drummer, guitar and bass lines and band itself toward the rest - time waves sometimes, petcussion slows down and whole construct loose balance distracting me from emotions. Beautifull voice I admire sometimes waves on the tone too and could perform more clear diction to let me understand words more precisely. All the rest feels great. What I imagine to hear in some parts are more not obvious harmonies or some echoes on guitars like in post rock genre f.e.in "Spine" song culminations. For me that would release emotions in wider spectrum. I didn't fully exploited this album yet but already look forward to hear next!😊❤

seems like a managerial decision to persue a cinematic sound - can't judge. beautiful texture, enjoyable melodies, but truly nothing remarkable. hope this gets included in a movie, so the decision pays off. Overall, lacklustre work as it is, because it "asks" for a visual element in order to be complete. The ending of Valkyriernes Sang is freaking awesome. Edit: grammar.
