In the last query, why is it necessary to check the last name and ssn of the managers? If the managers are employees and are stored in the employee relation then when we check for the last name smith in EMP we would find all of them including managers.

Great lessons and examples! However, I slightly disagree with your steps in solving the 3rd question, though it still gives the correct answer. Following what you taught on division operation in the lesson on binary operations, the outcome of the division operation here in the 3rd example, should be a single attribute and it should be titled 'ESSN' not 'SSN'. You either rename it to SSN and do a natural join. OR You do a theta join where you specify a condition ESSN=SSN. Last step is in order where you project the names from the above relation. Writing this to show that I'm paying attention to what you are teaching, and I am grateful!

Poor video. At least explain what the different symbols mean instead of saying 'hope you understood'. You explained the logic but not how the query was actually made.

This is a sequel video I believe. They explained the meaning of the symbols in another video. The Greek symbol sigma is the selection symbol and it resembles an O. The Pi symbol is projection. Theta join has an hour glass laying to its side with a symbol theta next to it. Natural join is just the hour glass laying to its side.
