She doesn't have as many stereotypical characteristics of a MPDG, but she serves the function of driving the plot and motivating the male protagonist's development without getting much character growth of her own (at least in the movie). I mean it is what it is. If someone is not attracted to your sex. They are not attracted to your sex. Think of it this way. Would it be any different if a Roxy was a man? Then Ramona found out she was lesbian so she left him?? Would that crash the man? Sure. Would it be more socially acceptable cuz gay is more socially acceptable today? Yes Would it have been more socially acceptable in the early 20s? No Just cuz it's a woman or a man, straight or gay doesn't matter. Break ups suck and the reasoning for them varies. No reason to say Ramona should go against her own feelings to stay with someone she doesn't love. Just so Roxy can be happy.

@SweeteaDove 4 ай бұрын
@@MrEzuma Maybe, but the phrase "just a phase" implies that there was really no value in it. Life is a series of phases, always, and they always mean something to who you are. But it's essentially like being told "I never really loved you, I wasn't capable of loving you, and eveytime I said I did was a lie" Which can CRUSH your trust and self confidence. Especially in the queer community where so many people fight and struggle to find acceptance and love and just people who understand them without mocking them
@MrNicoJac
@MrNicoJac 4 ай бұрын
@@SweeteaDove I disagree that being a phase means it held no value or love. I've had many phases in life (some romantic, some like school or friends). I've also been those phases for lots of people. At the end of the day, I see it as them and me teaching the other something about their/my true self - or at least the person we'd like to become. If your love ends up being a building block for someone else's cathedral, it still hurts that they didn't build it with/for you, obviously. But over time I've come to see that the life they wanted to live is not the one I wanted to. And so, even though the rejection hurts, I'm also glad I got to live in my own cathedral. And if some of my masonry ended up featured in some (but not all!) elements of theirs, then even though I was a phase for them and even though it hurts, it still was not for nothing. You can be a meaningful phase, and if you helped the other person discover who they are/want to be, then there is also a kind of tragic beauty to be found in that... Cheers :)

Knives is the absolute best character in the movie, even Wallace is a honorary second place! She has a beautiful personality and is very mature, despite being a literal teen. Love her so much. That being said, she does have her own flaws, like everyone else here, and this is awesome too. When she started dating Young Neil to get back on Scott? Not exactly the right thing to do, but a very teenager thing to do. And she really did say some nasty things to Ramona while still being sure that Ramona was the one who made Scott dump her. But again, she stopped being angry at her the moment she saw the situation. A wonderful girl (and a wonderful character), 12/10.

I would rate Roxie Richter as the "least evil" evil ex. From what I remember, she at least had something of a legitimate grievance: she was heartbroken by basically being tokenized by Ramona "having a phase" (or however they couch it in the movie). Every other ex is just being a little punk over what is ancient history. (edit: Okay, I could have just waited a few minutes for them to get to it. :D )
@lttrbox
@lttrbox 4 ай бұрын
I agree so much with this. Roxy doesn't count as an ex - or really a person - in this movie, just a punchline, which you can see from Scott's only reaction being getting horny and verifying: "You had a sexy face?" And then, Ramona has to fight her, because again; Roxy doesn't count as a real ex in this movie, or a real person, so this is not Scott's battle, it's hers. I hate this scene and this movie so much for this biphobia and I'm honestly disappointed that it didn't get called out in the video.
@MistaZULE
@MistaZULE 4 ай бұрын
@@lttrbox she is a real character, Scott can't fight her because he doesn't want to fight a girl. It's more mysoginistic than biphobic. It's quite shitty by today's standards and by no means am I defending that scene, but it doesn't detract from my love of the film. Also want to point out that Roxy has more screen time than Matthew Patel who's just pirate looking song n dance guy, or the Katayanagi twins who are just the Japanese DJ twins. Those two guys aren't even characters. She has a real motive for wanting to join the league as she was straight up used by Ramona to experiment with her sexuality. If anything Ramona is the evil ex for Roxy and won't even admit what she did was wrong.

I once wrote a paper about how the Scott Pilgrim comic series presented a gendered subversion of Campbell’s Hero’s Journey because of Knives Chao. She is the one who goes through the journey with the indie rock scene being her “other world”, but the story focuses on the monsters. It’s in a way, a lesson about how real human flaws aren’t diagnosable through narrative structures, but we can use stories to contextualize our growth and actions.

I feel like the film brings up an interesting logical fallacy. One popular phrase people use about video games is, ”if I run into enemies, I’m going in the right direction.” While that works in a game, opposition doesn’t always mean it is the right direction. While it is good to face opposition, there are times that facing it would do more harm for yourself than anything else.

The thing that sets Scott apart from Rimona’s Ex’s, is that after he got over the relationship, he confronts what makes him an immature guy. He eventually grows from the relationship ending, rather than the Ex’s dwelling on the relationship and never growing. (At least in the original comic, the movie doesn’t go through that.) Also, canonically, the comic, movie, and series are all canon, just in different timelines.

First time I watched it and was a teenager, I thought Ramona is a jerk and Scott is a rly nice guy. Then I watched it again, as a young adult, and realized Scott is a jerk, Ramona is such a cool girl and deserves better. Then I watched it as a grown adult that finally could understand the mess that makes us human and realized they are both jerks. And they deserve each other and, as long as they are trying to get a better version of themselves, it’s ok

One of the best things about the anime ( Scott Pilgrim Takes Off on Netflix) is how it not only shows how Ramona isn't a good person (her main issue is running away from her problems which is what causes her to dump all those people) but it shows that without Scott, every single character in the story has a marked improvement in their lives.

Is really good to see this video specially today. Today I noticed I hurt people. I talked with someone I've hurt last year and noticed my motivations to act how I acted with this person, making me as the protagonist of that story such like Scott did, don't justify what I did. I couldn't even lunch correctly when the feeling of regret and guilt stucked in my throat. And I don't know how I couldn't remember about all Scott Pilgrim's franchise (Manga, Movie and Anime) that I love so much and the meaning behind It. You guys are amazing and I'm grateful you've created this channel and help people see the hidden things in movies. I'm still a bit frustrated and also still accepting that I did something wrong instead of being the protagonist of the story, but this makes me a bit lighter. Thank you guys.

I also like the parallel set up with Knives and Ramona. When Knives challenges Ramona, they show how Scott has now formed his own evil Ex. They show us how this whole process of hurt people hurting people is a cycle. Its only broken when the person who caused all the hurting actually takes accountability for their actions and meaningfully apologizes.

(and favourite graphic novel series) You guys nailed the message of Scott being a bad person but learning from his mistakes by the way, though I will say that part's done even better in the comics - the whole sequence with the Nega Scott representing all of Scott's past mistakes, Scott running from him for most of the books but then finally giving in & taking accountability is honestly one of the best things I've seen in literature (cannot recommend the graphic novels enough to anyone who loves this movie, they're so good!)

I just want to say this on the most recent video, but I've been watching Cinema Therapy for about a year and a half now; and I've always appreciated Jono and Alan's candor when talking about their own personal struggles. Not in a parasocial way, but these are two men who - by societal standards - have everything going for them. Stability, family, a passion project. And yet they are still open about the struggles they do and have had. As someone in Gen Z, it's so easy to feel like we're going to be crushed under the weight of everything. But it eases some of my anxiety when Jono and Alan are able to say, "Sometimes things suck. They sucked for us, but we got through it. We're still getting through it. And it's hard, but it gets easier over time." I just really appreciate the authenticity and transparency that this channel operates with.

I never got to see it, but you had valuable cultural takeaways to showcase, and that POV and all the layered coatings of all the communication of all those screens that were the current culture thing and also actually parenting you. Centered by this because it was pretty much what everyone you knew in your school year, was going through... but unique to each of them. It always helps when you can fibally reflect from a wider perspective than what you are currently experiencing in life.
