Thats what lots of people tend to get wrong about great villains. The deepest and most relatable villains are relatable, they currently do or used to give a shit about something/someone. It can depend on what or who it is they give or gave a shit about, but there is always something or someone a great villain cares about more than themselves. Pain is a reflection of loss. Loss can only occur when someone cares deeply for someone or something. All the credit to Mads Mikkelsen for bringing Pain the audience feels to his characters, from Rogue One to Casino Royale.
