I’m from the 90s stylist day my hair and my clients hair was healthier because of the maintenance we believed in. I want a relaxer so bad right now but I refused to go to a stylist these days and chance leaving a salon with blood running down my face. That’s a little hard but I know you feel me. I miss those days. A Silk press are hard to keep up with too. I appreciate you speaking on this subject with facts.

Everyone wants to be natural yet go by the fast food restaurant, then to the acrylic nail salon before getting their NATURAL hair done! The natural thing is a trend like bell-bottoms and low-rise jeans. Styles come and they go.

I completely agree with you! In our salon we like to say that “natural hair isn’t for lazy people” natural hair is fantastic and a wonderful way to embrace our culture. And while a relaxer can be damaging to not only our hair and scalp but sometimes our overall health, it has to be acknowledged that relaxed hair can also thrive under the right circumstances when done properly by a PROFESSIONAL.

I disagree natural hair is only difficult for people that don't know how to properly deal with their hair. I am super lazy and I can do my natural hair just fine and I'm currently at waist length. Why have something like a Relaxer thrive when it's just damaging your skin and hair constant use of relaxers have been linked to skin cancer why go the lazy route at risk of your health.

I wish we could get to the point in which we used moderation with our hair. I've been natural for over 15 years now, and I have to say that because I am not "married" to a specific idea about how my hair looks, I have been able to cultivate a variety of styles that allows me to deal gently with my hair. I AM a lazy natural. It's a "wash-n-go" on a regular basis, and I wrap it up at night to hold in moisture and keep it from becoming overly tangled. I don't do much styling, instead just working with how my hair turns out that day. My hair is healthy and I use minimal styling products. I am a professional that works with clients in professional settings on a daily basis. When you are dealing with damage from relaxers, extensions, etc what I see is people becoming consumed with idea of how their hair SHOULD look, and not accepting how it actually is. This is true of EVERY hair community amongst Black folks natural or not. Just ask a naturalista about the best method of making their curls "pop". It's exhausting.

😮‍💨Whew, You said a word! Moderation is so important! It is the key to all of this! Like you said, How people decide to wear their hair is everyone’s personal business right? But hair/scalp-care is universal, We all need that; And sometimes neglecting or abusing either for too long will lead to permanent damage. Thank you for your comment. I appreciate your perspective 💜🙌🏾

Brandi. First of all I am so excited that I found your chanel. I have been so educated or re-educated I should say. This video made me so emotional because I have enjoyed wearing a relaxer. And because of our community going natural and doing so beautiful, I felt like I was not doing right by my beautiful race using relaxers, so I started wearing braids which was way out of my comfort zone. When done professional, I had healthy hair. I got emotional because I didn’t know that the box selves version were dangerous until years ago when I did it myself for a year or two for hardship reasons. And then I was trusted a non professional family member’s opinion to use it in my young daughters hair and her hair literally fell out before my eyes. Some time has passed by and we recovered but it will always be a part of our experience. I do not live in the Atlanta area but I was inspired to return to my wonderful stylist and discuss how I love my hair and leave the braids alone. Together we can get me back. Thank you, thank you so much.

It is not the poison, it is the dose, anything is dangerous when used by untrained hands. I used to relax as soon as I saw a bit of new growth and my hair was shot. Then I wore weaves all through the mid-nineties to mid-2000s and got traction alopecia. I was quick to respond and had a knowledgeable tricologist take care of it for the next 4 years. I have since continued her regimen with some tweaks and I am peeking at mid-back with healthy, strong relaxed hair that is relaxed with fine and medium Mizani two or three times a year. Recently a natural chick at work gave me a card for a stylist that she said would do my big chop. Mine you she had an inch of bleached blonde hair on her head! The damn nerve of this policing is crazy. I eat my fruits, nuts and vegetables not put them on my hair. There is definitely some craziness going on.

I stopped relaxing when I found out they could be deadly. I love my natural hair. It’s naturally curly & I like how it looks & feels. It’s carefree in the summer when it’s hot & it looks just like I get fresh silk presses in the winter from roller sets & a flat iron. Wish I had never gotten relaxers at all.

Girl its the poison too, just say you love having straight hair more and go its ok. All these studies out there about relaxers connected to fibroids and uterine cancers, yet you can still sit up here and say "iTs nOt ThE PoisOn ....". My only thing is as grown women, people are free to choose their poison; some people smoke, some people live in McDonalds...some people relax their hair.

I remember. For one people had weekly or bi-monthly appointments-and kept them. Prices were reasonable and not meant to put stylist in the tax brackets of attorneys or pay for hot girl summers- even when stylist raised their prices. They did what their stylist told them to do, ROLLER SETS were a big thing (rarely did I see anyone go from bowl to blowdry) and the only people who I saw with damaged hair were younger girls who owned their own curling iron or anyone who curled their hair every day or didn't take care of their natural or relaxed hair properly. Even box relaxers were not an issue because you followed the instructions and then you "wet-set" your hair then wrapped it each night and only bumped it when you needed to. You got your trims regularly, you got your presses regularly (for the naturals), and you "slept pretty", slept with rollers (again no overuse of hot tools), and or wrapped your hair at night. Healthy hair of any kind doesn't take that much.

Relaxer on already damaged hair follicles and scalp is not good either. I have been natural for 15 years, do protective styles all the time and have thick hair with all my edges and nape in tact. You just have to take care of your hair in protective styles too. When I used relaxed professionally done at the salon my hair always broke off or thinned out.

Not the graham crackers 😂🤣😂🤣😂 You ain't lying Brandi, I see the relaxers on the self and the containers are dusty 😂 I grew up using Dudley products and relaxers 100% black owned. There are other relaxers that are American made not Korean. We used relaxers back then because natural was time consuming to maintain. I do what works for me and my hair is healthy. I have seen people that are natural and it's damaged. At the end of the day IMO it's about individuals' preferences. I remember Rio Hair back in the day and it was supposed to be all natural ingredients and women's hair fell out. There was a major lawsuit out as a result of this "natural relaxer". Your client's hair looks so nice, that style is so suited for her.

Absolutely everyone thought their natural hair would automatically be “3c”, smh, then when people realized they didn’t now people wanted a Gina curl, that she charges 500 dollars and it’s on a Jheri curl, when is two chemicals at one time, much worse than a relaxer, but your right application is everything

Such a cute cut! Your video made me get up and moisturize my hair because it's true that as a wearer of my natural hair, I do not keep it as moisturized as I should. My natural texture as a bi-racial woman is the only reason why I get away with not moisturizing it consistently, imo, but am I really getting away with it, I ask myself? No. Anyway, the comment you made about parents putting relaxers in their 13 year olds' hair caught my attention because I've been wondering about relaxing my oldest daughter's hair because of the retention of moisture issue, scalp health, which you mentioned as well, and edge protection. However, she is 10 years old. Are you saying that you don't recommend a relaxer at her age, or just one done at home?
@BrandiBeautyTV
@BrandiBeautyTV Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much ♥️♥️ Nothing wrong with relaxers when done by a licensed professional. For young teens a mild relaxer is always a good place to start. If done correctly she should still be able to retain her curl pattern (maybe a little looser) but it’ll make it more manageable. However still consult with a professional you trust first so they can give a true assessment 💜

say it gurl. I am natural last 9 years because of so called professionals who x 2 took my hair out slow and steady with relaxers and their so called professional service. It took me some time to learn how to best manage my natural hair and I am good now. If I feel the need to go straight I do a simply silk press. But, to each their own...do you boo

This is so beautiful!!!! I love the cut and color and the education that came with it!!! The natural hair community is so overrated!!! Not to mention that the damn products are extremely expensive but have the time, don’t work on my hair but work for my daughters (so I’m not mad or waste the product)!! My grandmother was a beautician and my hair was relaxed and healthy and thick, long and I had all of middle school always asking if I was mixed with something…😅😂 no ma’am, just someone that took care of my hair.

If relaxers are dangerous, then technically nair hair remover should be included as well. The alkalinity in nair greatly surpasses a super relaxer. And people use nair every 1 to 2 weeks. No one is saying a word about nair. As a matter of fact I hear crickets and I hear no talk about nair and nair melts your hair off within 5 minutes!

That’s an excellent point. A lot of people have in their mind what natural is. Sadly hardly anyone that lives in western society is natural. They want natural to apply to their hair only but wear perfume, use detergents, buy candles, use household cleaners, eat processed food, wear acrylic nails 💅🏾, wear makeup, use an air conditioner, etc. lol ain’t nobody natural! It’s not even an argument worth having with people who think like that. 🙂Thank you for commenting!

🤔 It looks like this ladies issue was wearing “protective” styles back to back and not maintaining her real hair under those styles. That should have been the focus because if she wasn’t following a healthy hair regimen natural I doubt she magically will do a 360 with relaxed hair. Also relaxers are damaging it’s literally breaking down the bonds in your hair but your hair your choice if u like it I love it for U. The natural hair movement was a life saver for so many black women and took off because a lot of professionals were doing a one size fits all. They didn’t know how to deal with natural texture hair and pushed chemical services on black women. It just weird to me when some of us frame the conversation like our God given hair is “trend”.
@BrandiBeautyTV
@BrandiBeautyTV Жыл бұрын
That’s exactly what her issue was. It’s all about texture, lifestyle, safety and what the individual is comfortable with. Unfortunately many people have been burned by professionals of yesterday who slapped relaxer on everyone and all the time; and what a horrific era that was. Still, natural hair isn’t everyone’s cup of tea and relaxers aren’t the enemy. I’ve been natural for 16 years, I just choose to not pin people to a cross who choose another route! I encourage healthy hair based upon what makes sense for the individual; Hair is meant to be cultivated! Cut, color, relaxers, etc!

You contradict yourself! Saying that natural hair gurus have people mixing up their whole kitchen being anecdotal then saying that the products that they push are less effective than mayonnaise. If someone cannot afford a hair stylist should they just be bald?? You say we should accept our hair being bad because we can't afford salon professional hair products.That relaxers are dangerous outside of a professionals hands... Do you hear yourself? So, people who can't afford to pay a stylist 4 times a year, should not be getting relaxers, people who can't afford salon professional products should not shampoo or use conditioner?! And yes, bleach is just as terrible as relaxers, just because the commenter didn't explicitly express that it is doesn't mean that it isn't. Natural hair IS a one size fits all solution lol, imagine someone saying that your skin does not suit you, try skin bleaching, knowing the side effects. There are no side effects to your natural hair, don't even try it. Most people struggle with long hair, of all races, the Karen cut isn't there because those ladies like short hair, it's there because longer hair is tedious. You could have just let her go with a cut, cause you cut it anyway... Protective styling(with synthetic hair or weave or wigs) isn't for her, and she could probably manage her short natural hair just us much as she can manage the short relaxed hair. I'll never trust stylists like you who critique people who have grown their own hair, and are giving others free advice on how they did it. You hate that they kept clients out of your chair and paying you. I'm more of a virgin hair type of person, no relaxers, no bleach, no heat, FOR MYSELF. You do you, hun, there are some great relaxed hair gurus who have grown their hair (yes with protective styles and without). I just want black women to thrive whether that's in the stylists chair or at the university of KZbin, relaxed or silkpressed or fully natural. I just don't like when people discredit others work to pull you to their side... That's all. Especially where money is involved, stylists act like they don't get paid for every person who sits in their chair and doing hair is charity work and the Natural Gurus are taking all of your money...
@nonjabulomangoro1871
@nonjabulomangoro1871 Жыл бұрын
@Jenn I think it's disingenuous for stylists to discredit free advice from a group of people whose hair is thriving(natural/relaxed/heat trained/bleached) so that they can assert themselves as more knowledgeable and then put that knowledge behind a pay wall of being their client. If that's bitter then I guess I sound bitter. I'm just wondering which one of my statements in relation to this video is false or exaggerated?

You can not make the medical claim that hair relaxers are or are not connected to black female reproductive carsogenics with out being high up in the medical field. Actually if that info has been published medically or is on pub med it is against the law for you to make that claim! I know doing relaxers puts money in your pocket but what if it is true? People are going to do what they want and nobody can live another persons life but themselves! Do you also encourage people to smoke cigarettes?
