Haven't been training the SN balance, OHS, etc with the hook grip. I don't release when I perform a SN. Never thought of training SN balance, OHS, etc with the hook too! Greg=brilliant

I only get pain in wrist and thumb for a few days after a session of heavy snatches using hook grip. Should I switch to releasing hook grip or train some days with straps instead of hook grip?

I'd try to figure out why and fix it, which may mean releasing always
@amaninamman45233 жыл бұрын
Is this the same for the clean? I've seen one coach suggest it should be maintained until you fully stand up to help with connection to the bar (Apologies if there's a vid I can't find it 😅)
@CatalystAthletics3 жыл бұрын
It can be held in the clean, but in my opinion that should only be a temporary remedial choice for someone who can't figure out how to turn the bar over properly. Thumb should be released as late as possible and as full of a grip on the bar as possible maintained into the rack position. The rack position itself is dictated by proportions (i.e. relative arm segment lengths) regardless of perfect mobility, so not all lifters are even physically capable of holding the hook in an acceptable rack - so to say holding it is correct is cutting out a significant portion of lifters in the world.

Hi Greg, not the subject of the video but, should you go atg when training overhead squat as an accessory exercice? Thks
@CatalystAthletics6 жыл бұрын
Yes. OHS should replicate the receiving position of the snatch entirely.

is it ok to release the hookgrip on my left ? cause only my left wrist hurts
@CatalystAthletics5 жыл бұрын
mother 2277 I would do both. Trying to only do one is likely to cause an imbalanced position and wind up creating new wrist or elbow pain, and you’re also likely to have a problem with one side moving differently than the other in the turnover.

I have this same problem but I believe mine stems from an old injury on my left thumb. Usually after a snatch session (light or heavy) the next few days my arms will swell and go numb throughout the day. :/ possibly also nerve issues but who knows!

Could one potentially achieve a painless wider grip if he releases the hook?
@CatalystAthletics6 жыл бұрын
If you mean widening the grip as part of the turnover, it's definitely been done (Kolecki) but I wouldn't recommend it. If you mean you need a wider grip but it hurts when you're holding the hook, yes, try without and learn to release.
@cannonfodder82873 жыл бұрын
I used the hook grip for the first time today for power snatch. I'm definitely more explosive in the second pull. Would it be more beneficial to release the hook grip to catch the bar or does it not make a difference whether the bar is caught in hook grip or thumb-around-fingers grip?

I'm confused by your question since it's exactly what this video answers.

I can't even hold hookgrip with sn, ohs and etc. My wrists hurt too much. Is it okay to train them without the hook grip? Also my wrist hurt during turnover too. Any help appreciated, thank you :(
@CatalystAthletics2 жыл бұрын
Sounds to me like your wrists are the problem, not the hook grip itself. If wrists hurt overhead in the snatch, you release it in turnover like explained in this video. If your wrists hurt even during the pull or turnover of a snatch... you have a much bigger problem to address. As a starting point, strengthen your wrists - kzbin.info/www/bejne/jafZZ2OIa55kodU But you need to investigate more and find out what exactly the problem is to fix it.
