This book sounds wonderful. I love the concept, and the writing is beautiful. It never fails to amaze me how you can talk so long about a book without dropping and spoilers.😊

I listened to this book on Audible, and your review of Daniel Mason's "The Piano Tuner" really captures the ethereal and introspective qualities of the novel. However, I think there's an additional layer to explore, particularly regarding the historical context within which Mason sets the narrative-at the peak of the British Empire. The choice of protagonist, Edgar Drake, who observes rather than conquers, subtly critiques the era of colonialism. The piano, emblematic of Western culture, is out of tune in the Burmese landscape, symbolizing the discord between imperialistic ambitions and local realities. For today's readers, this can provoke thoughts on the lingering effects of colonialism in current international relationships. Mason nudges us to look beneath the historical veneer, prompting a reflection on the narratives and voices that history often overlooks. Considering the personal journey of Edgar Drake that you described, integrating this historical critique enriches our conversation about the book. It bridges historical impacts with current issues, highlighting the continuing relevance of these themes. How do you think recognizing these elements of colonial critique shifts our interpretation of Mason’s deeper messages about identity and existence?

I have never heard the word "paradisical" before, and I loved it! I may begin to look for opportunities to use it myself. Those of us that love language could listen to you all day. Thank you.

Well done. I ,too, have read the book and it is all that you have shared. The author described the scenes so well that an artist could paint each chapter and as one walked through the gallery would experience the entire story without a word.

I bought this book when it first came out. Now you've sold me on it. I thought it was all set in Paris. I read the first page or so then and wasn't captivated. Proving-it all depends when one begins a book, sometime. I was just at the library, had I heard this yesterday I'd've gone straight to Mason, not Maugham as I currently have half my books in another city. Thanks again!!
