If you have pain or inflammation along the inner side of you shin bone (tibia), you might have shin splints, or medial tibial stress syndrome. Shin splints are caused by overuse, or repetitive stress on the shin bone, and muscles and connective tissue of the lower leg.
Runners and dancers are at high risk for shin splints, as are athletes who have suddenly changed or intensified their training. Shin splints can also develop in people who don’t warm up properly before exercise, or who skip stretching and cooling down after a workout. Improper footwear, flat feet, and high arches are also risk factors.
Before doing this self-massage, I recommend getting an accurate diagnosis from your doctor in order to rule out anything more serious, like stress fractures, compartment syndrome, or any condition for which massage might be contraindicated.
In addition to practicing this wonderful self-massage regularly, be sure to rest the leg, modify your routine, check your footwear, avoid activities that cause pain, and warm up and cool down thoroughly. It will be worth it when you’re out of pain!

I have worked construction my entire adult life and wearing tight socks can have my shin splint inflamed this massaging helps but hurts so bad!

Do you use a massage oil ever? what are some good ones?

Great question. I tend to use nothing, or a very small amount of cream. The massages I teach involve a lot of myofascial release. We want to be able to mobilize the layers of tissue. If we use oil, we'll just be sliding over the skin.

Thanks for the answer. What oil would you recommend for a Swedish type massage. I read somewhere that Sesame oil is for my Ayurveda type of body!
