For many Europeans, Europe today is synonymous with the "Christian Occident". But like so much that has shaped our civilization, Christianity also comes from the Orient. And it is not the only "one-faith belief" that shapes the continent: even before Christianity, Judaism spread throughout the Roman Empire. And on the Iberian Peninsula, Muslim Moors rule from the 8th to the 15th century.

I'd never heard discussion of such an influential figure as Columbanus. This doc is so condensed I find myself rewinding constantly to let the words sink in. This piece is a real gift to those looking for the connections along the journey of civilization. I really appreciate the work you've done to bring this freely to all who love learning. Thank you!

great presentation. I have researched Gallus unintentionally by way of living near St.Gallen. It was fun to see the Cathedral Ive sat so many times before in the video. Ive also come to learn by my own intuition and curiousity about many figures in the reformation finding the connections to Switzerland. Luther, Zwingle, and I did stumble upon Jan Hus researching the statue of Imperia rotating on the shore of Konstans. Keep your curiousity alive and let it show you something to learn. Somehow, everything is connected. So many great connections in this video. Great Work.

An excellent documentary, but I think its title is misleading; this is by far the Story of Western Europe only and not the entire continent's history. Talking about Religion, Beliefs, and Ideas, the original Schism is not even mentioned, 1,000 years of Byzantine story is totally ignored, end even the New Rome's conquest by the Crusaders is not mentioned. Only Kyiv is briefly mentioned as part of the eastern European story, claiming to be the 3rd Rome after Constantinople's fall.

Funny. I also noticed the lack of mention of Scandinavia, and the role of Denmark/Norway and Sweden, almost as if we aren't part of Europe, despite the influence in Britain, Normandy, the Baltic, and the Kievan Rus. So far I've seen part 1 and 2, if there isn't anything by part 3, parts 4 to 6 can be stuffed up somewhere dark.

The glowing picture painted here of Muslim Al Andalus as a haven of religious tolerance and cooperation sadly ended by Christian "zealotry" is highly misleading. Both Christians and Jews were fiscally and legally oppressed and mistreated with impunity in many other ways. Neither enjoyed what we would now call citizenship. For starters, neither could testify in court against a Muslim nor raise his hand against one, not even in self-defense. One can readily imagine to what abuses this led....

Great documentary. However, the fall of Constantnople was because of the 4rth crusade. In 1204 Constantinople completely destroyed. Crusaders murdered innocents, raped women and children and sacked. Thus, it was very easy for the Ottomans to conquer it in 1453.

Do you know where I can obtain any actual figures for deaths in No Africa? I'm having a hard time finding anything that approaches a number based in fact. Anything approaching the 10,000 Catholics killed by Protestants in France during the St Bart's Day massacre? I wonder if the 6 million dead during the 30-Years War was surpassed? No one mentions the slave trade in Africans headed up by the Arabs - it was multiple times greater than the trans-Atlantic slave trade and the last slave market in Mecca was held during my lifetime!

Theres something that I think needs to be said, I notice in many historical documentaries the European crusaders are always portrayed to be the aggressors and made to look like power hungry villains invading Muslim territory unprovoked. Now look I'm not religious at all and have no dog In this fight, but as an unbiased observer knowing that Jerusalem and the rest of Judea was considered Christian territory that was part of the Roman empire for centuries and that it was the Muslim Turks who initially invaded and took the land from Eastern Rome, it is absolutely no surprise to me as well as most people at that time probably, that the Christians would not be happy about that and would do whatever they could to get it back. I mean look at it this way, would anyone really have been surprised of Muslim retribution if European Christians attacked and conquered Mecca unprovoked? Nope.. everyone would say they were justified so how is this any different?
@Techfollowme
@Techfollowme Жыл бұрын
YOU DEFINITELY HAVE A DOG IN THE FIGHT. JERUSALEM WAS NOT CONSIDERED A CHRISTIAN TERRITORY, IT WAS HELD AS MIXED ZONE. THE EUROPEANS WERE THE ONES WHO WERE FIGHTING FOR POWER AND CAME AFTER THE MUSLIMS AS A COMBINED FORCE AND YET THEY WERE STILL DEFEATED. SALAHUDDIN AYYUBI EVEN ALLOWED THE CHRISTIANS TO LEAVE JERUSALEM PEACEFULLY WHILE THE CHRISTIANS HAD SLAIN EVERY MUSLIM IN THE CITY BEFORE. SO YEAH THE CHRISTIANS WENT FROM BEING Oppressed BY THE ROMANS AND JEWS TO BE THE MAIN OppressERS FOR Generations To COME. LOOK AT THE HOLOCAUST AND SLAVERY ALL WERE BASED IN CHRISTIANITY BEING THE SUPERIOR RELIGION.

4:46 I’ll tell you why. The Followers of Horus have always been very shrewd and sold the promise of immortality to the mobs, thus trying to doctrinally unify Ancient Egypt whilst poisoning the wells of saner religions (there were other theological systems, too, not just the Osiris-Isis-Horus one). Saul of Tars was a Pharisee who sold the Messianic ideology to non- Jewish population; it’s quite ironic how his successful attempt to destroy the Roman Empire led to Vatican. It was for political reasons that Constantine was forced to adopt Christianity. Etc. They all have one thing in common- lying and preying on the gullible masses made of individuals who have been- literally so- scared to, and of, death.

I would be careful to state an opinion as a fact, in regards to how monotheism started. To speculate that the ancient Hebrew culture derived ideas more ancient cultures is only to be taken as speculation. It is a very weak speculation that Moses of the Bible derived the notion of the soul, also known as the spirit, from the Egyptian culture. Even to speculate that the earliest Hebrew theology concepts was borrowed or derived from Sumerian cultures is very flimsy. It is known that even in the earliest creation stories found in the land of Sumer, one deity is claimed to create humanity and within this tale explain of lesser deities wanting control or ownership of the created man and woman-- All to say that the concept of worshiping only one deity should not be assumed to be created after the belief in polytheism, pantheism, or totemism. I think we all have to admit that we modern humans can only speculate and our speculation of history can be considered close to truth by presenting what we call evidence to increase the probability that certain speculation is likely an accurate portrayal of history.

….”After Ottoman occupation, the Hagia Sophia became a mosque” … Uh, NO, Professor. It would be considered an act of unforgivable blasphemy to “convert” a mosque into a church-the Muslims that “forced” Islam on the Hagia Sophia were AT BEST indifferent to the effect such an act would have on Christians….

This is a great documentary but sadly it provided a simplistic account of the crusades and its motivations. Christianity was in fact being besieged by islamic forces from the middle east. There was a time when even Pope John VIII had to pay tribute to the muslim emir of Sicily. Christians who came under islamic conquest were also converted or forced to live us dhimmis with all the restrictions and subclass treatment. Pilgrimages of Christians to the holy land were also increasingly becoming impossible due to the harassments and systematic prohibitions of the muslim rulers. This was a hard pill for the Christians to swallow considering that the middle east used to be under the dominion of Christianity and was in fact, its birthplace. To see it being lost forever because of islamic invasion and the realization that islam will continue to push onwards into the remaining christian territories in Europe is what animated europeans to launch the crusades. Hence, the crusades should be viewed as christianity fighting back against islam. Indeed, it gave Christianity a breathing space, it expanded christian territories and solidified western Europe as a christian fortress

Sadly, there is no account of the Polish Commonwealth and its contribution to Europe.

this is at some points biased.......... some view the Christians Crusades as COUNTER - Crusades towards Muslim expansion. Spain, Byzantium , and Umayyad invasion of Aquitaine at the Battle of Tours(France)...... seems to me Muslims started stepping on toes first 😆 ............. loved the info. on Irish influence on Christianity!!! no I am not Irish.

You speak about eastern Christianity and not a word about the first Christian states Armenia and Georgia, that’s not fair

The crusaders also butchered Orthodox Christians. They helped weaken the Byzantine empire and contributed to the fall of Constantinouple because they sacked and looted the city and then refused to help defend vs the Ottoman empire because eastern Christians weren't Catholic.
