Religion is BANNED in China?! 中国宗教信仰自由吗？

A British PhD student in China discusses his experiences of religion in China. At first, i thought it might be banned but in fact, 18% of the population are Buddhist and growing religions here such as Christianity account for 5% of the population. There are churches, mosques, temples everywhere you go in China, even in the most communist part of China which i show at the end of the video!

You might be interested in hearing this as I did an investigation on this matter over two years ago from all the commotion we were hearing in the MSM about China cracking down on religion and no religious freedom in China etc etc. Upon my investigation, it turned out that the US was weaponizing Christianity against the government in China. It was like digging for a needle in haystack but eventually I found an article revealing what was happening and why the CPC had to take action to stop extremism building up in underground churches similar to Muslim Ugyhurs being radically converted in Xinjiang. This is something western media is hiding from the world.

I also personally identify myself as an atheist. Here in Eastern Europe, on university campuses, young people who are generally part of more serious religious backgrounds (like Pentecostals, Baptists, etc.) tend to gather in very large groups in dorm rooms, pray together, read from the Bible or sing, generally in the evening. Politics or social aspect don't come into this stuff, but I can say that on the ground level, these people tend to seek to convert their roommates who are generally not very religious people (or other people generally in the class with them/on the university campus in general), or to ''force'' those in the room with them to attend these gatherings involuntarily, since they have nowhere to go at the time of the meeting. These things are fine, but can get annoying as time goes on. I can understand why China, with its history of religious extremism, takes these things much more thoroughly and seriously.

religion law in China in short: no religion activities is allowed in public areas and only allowed in religion facility or area like a church, payment recruitment and force for religions not allow, everyone has rights to chose religion or not, everyone has right to quit from religions at any time; however one rule in China: communist is non religionism! The church appears like the Anglican Church I go to based on the settings inside, the Lord's prayer they recited and the traditional hymn they sang. As far as I know, China has strict restrictions on religious activities because apparently some foreign governments try to use extreme religious doctrines to influence and brainwash the local Chinese people in order to cause insurrections, political instability and coloured revolution that are aimed at toppling the Chinese government. Let's be honest about it, no country in the world will allow foreign interference, be it a communist or a democratic country.

When I was posted to China more than 5 years ago to teach, I attended a local church in China. It was always overflowing with congregation. The pastor and visiting preachers were all local Chinese and at some points, I was surprised that some sermons touched on sensitive social and political issues. I attended church services for foreigners too and entry was by passport. The preachers are foreigners. I realized what the Chinese authority wants to ensure that religion is not used by foreigners as avenue of political influence. Years earlier, I remembered church members from overseas visiting China were asked to bring copies of Chinese bibles into China. During my posting in China, bibles were sold on the campus. I bought a couple as each costs less than US$2. At that price, China can export bibles for the world!

I am an oversea borned Chinese. I had visited China many times on work assignments. While there, I was free to attend English speaking church reserved for foreign passport holders. I visited the so called government recognized churches and non- registered home churches

This is the legal norm in China. According to the Constitution of the People’s Republic of China, the people have the freedom to believe in religion, and no organization or individual can interfere with the freedom of religious belief of others. However, people who believe in religion cannot gather to promote religion among atheist masses, and can only hold it in specific religious places. Similarly, atheists cannot preach atheism in religious places like theists. Most people in China are atheists. For places such as universities and colleges, reminding foreign friends not to gather crowds to promote religion on atheistic occasions is a matter in compliance with the law.

Also, it’s against the law to preach religion to people under 18 years of age, as kids cognitive function have not been fully developed (a bunch of dum-dums), thus they cannot make rational decisions. Police will leave you alone to what you do in your home behind close doors, but there is going to be problems if you do that in public, eg. at a kindergarten or grade school.

As a Christian country like Canada has more Christians than gays and lesbians. But the Lord's prayer in the mornings has removed from public schools for many years. The schools can no longer allowed talk about christianity. Merry Christmas is now replaced with happy holidays. Even if the west can only understand "religion" as meaning only Christianity, the answer is a firm "No"! Religion is definitely not banned in China. There are numerous churches in China, and they are often well attended, unlike the many parish churches in the west with dwindling congregations of elderly pensioners. But churches in China are required to be registered and expected to be free from foreign interference or dependence. Foreign meddling can come in various forms, such as denominational dogmatic oversight and strictures. It can also come in the form of "teaching material" such as Bible study notes and books into which can be smuggled cultural or political ideologies and lifestyle which are detrimental to Chinese traditions. "Home churches" or underground churches are naturally frowned upon because they are by their nature often trying to form counter-cultural and even anti-communist movements among its members. Many of them also see evangelisation or "witnessing" or proselytization as a divine imposition on the followers, leading to people being badgered or pressured. Straight-laced American evangelicals will also dismiss China's myriad religious practices as religion. Seen as idolatry, Chinese religions are inconsequential to the arrogant western religionists. China has thousands of deities that people worship regularly. That's their RELIGION, and millions freely practise them without hindrance. Go to Fijian, the home of the Mazu cult, and you see millions of devout followers. Pop into any Buddhist or Taoist temple and religious freedom stares you in the face from the statues. There are many other religions such as Islam, Zoroastrian, Shamanism, etc. that flourish in China as long as they stick to what religions are supposed to be about. So to talk about religion being banned in China is ridiculous. Yes, certain "religions" are banned because they are deemed to be dangerous to social and political stability or corrosive of Chinese traditional culture, whether Han, Uyghur, Kazakh, Zhang, Miao, Lisu, etc. Doomsday cults, of which many American fundamentalist versions of Christianity tend to veer towards, are much frowned upon. Many are led by "charismatic" leaders who often live lavish lifestyles on the "giving" of their followers. China is right to ban them. If only politicians in the west have the courage to ban the devious televangelists who blatantly scam their flocks. But when people can be so easily (mis)led, it is a gift to the politician in a system where power comes through popularity.

Pure sophistry. The Catholic Church has to fight the state for the right to appoint its own bishops. Because the state wants to interfere and control the engagement with parishoners. And who deems religions as dangerous to social stability? The Chinese Communist Party. Who can never be voted out of office.

Everytime someone tells me that we banned religion, I was like, really? There is a catholic church right in the very center of Beijing. An entire automous province of muslims. Buddhist and Daoist temples everywhere. Not mentioning all the traditional gods temples like the drgon kings, the Old Man of the Moon. Religion is banned in normal campus, because it's a place for study, and it's only banned for preaching, nobody cares if you believe in some religion yourselves. And there are even actual religious universities where you can study buddhism, catholic, islam, or whatever you want.

My mom is a Christian. She is the most devout Christian in the world. Since childhood, she must thank God for any good or bad things that happen around us. Thanks to my mom, our family became atheists. But I respect God very much. My mother is actually a sensitive and fragile person and God helped her a lot.

I was born and raised in China, my father had been a PLA (People's Liberation Army) high-ranking officer before his retirement, being a communist Party member is a must, and of course, he had no religion. The interesting thing is, it has never been a problem that my mother was and still is a devout Buddhist,. I am an atheist and I married an Orthodox Russian-Ukrainian wife, moreover, our kids are Orthodox as well under the influence of their mother and Babushka (grandmother), and we have been living under the same roof happily. It might be a rare case but my family reflects a tiny part of reality in China, religions are not banned.

To be precise, Chinese law only allows preaching and other religious activities in places of worship, such as churches, temples, mosques, etc., but it is illegal to conduct religious activities in other public places. In short, the Chinese government treats religion like the US government treats alcohol, you can have it，but you can't just have it on the street.

In fact, it's OK to preach privately. If the person being preached doesn't expose it, it's OK. My mother has a neighbor who goes to her house to preach to her every day. My mother doesn't want to join in, but she says every day that my mother is bored, she won't talk to her. After she has gone there several times, she never goes there again.

Church and state functions are strictly separated - and its quite normal based on international practice and experience of course to preserve one individual's right to believe and question spirituality. People should research more on the 1982 PRC Constituion, and the complex histories of religions in China such as Buddhism (Mahayana, Tantric, Theravada and Pure Land schools), Christianity, Islam, Daoism and traditional folk religions, including Bön and shamanism. Requires an open mind and REAL WORLD interviews with real experts, adherents and relevant people

Thanks for sharing. Even allowed to film inside a church. You can't film in a church in some places in the west. You can't preach openly on the street in the UK. In the UK you can't openly read the Bible in some churches unless you are qualified or registered.

When I was posted to work in China years ago (in early 2000's), I saw bibles sold on a campus in Wuhan (street stalls within the campus). It costs less than US$1 for a bible. I bought a couple.to give it to my Chinese Christian colleagues. I also attended a Chinese local church close to where I worked. It was overflowing with congregation. I had to go half an hour early to get a seat. The pastors in the Chinese church are all Chinese. From their sermons, I guessed that had training overseas as they made reference to churches overseas. In one of the sermons, I was surprised to hear an advice to give thanks to God first, not to the Communist Party! I also attended a foreigner's church which is only meant for foreigners (entry by passport). The difference is the pastors are all foreigners. I guess China does not want the churches to be used as a tool for subversion but as a spiritual institution.

Buddhism is religion. Temples can be seen everywhere. Christianity is exotic religion, government pays more attention because some people were misled and went extremism with it, like Falungong. If you are a Christian or any other religious belief and just doing your faith alone, no one cares you, but if you preach some unknown religion there, government can not tell what purpose you are after. That is why the restriction comes. They just do not want another Falungong again.

They don’t have proper services there.especially in Fuzhou are you kidding? The only place that’s many don’t even consider china that I’ve seen people actually doing proper Buddhist mantras and practices is in Tibet and even that is no longer a practicing temple because they CCP won’t allow it. People give offerings there too, monks go to pray there as well but they can’t be blessed by other monks and have Buddhist services there. I’m sorry to tell you, that what is happening in Buddhist temples in china isnt really considered being a “practicing Buddhist” I have family members who are monks, china isn’t a proper Buddhist practicing nation. Those who are monks in china have to swear their loyalty to the gov first, no REAL Buddhist would do that.

I have gone to Roman Catholic mass daily in Shanghai, The government refurbished the oldest catholic Cathedral in Shanghai at their expense. A religion has to be registered with the government just like the USA. Peace be with you!

But 2 corrections: most good Unis in china are govt founded and maitained sort of so not really private institution; and if you are a party member you are not allowed to believe in any religions, which sort of make sense cuz party members need to believe in science and communism.

出国留学之后也发现这一点，我觉得跟我们国家历史悠久的文明有关，宗教在中国历史上的发展和存在的时间真的很短，而且中华文明和智慧的形成和发展也不是基于宗教。对于宗教治国甚至没有文明发展可言的国家和一些民族，很难跟他们解释这一点。宗教信仰就是很个人的自由，跟政府还有政治没有任何关系。你信什么那是你个人自由，但你不能做扰乱社会秩序危害他人。在中国我觉得我们对宗教大多看作是你自己选择的生活哲学态度。提及的学校也只是禁止宗教活动你信什么也没人干涉，小学就有其他民族和信仰的同学，大家都没觉得有什么稀奇的，会好奇大家习俗吃的不太一样去你家玩你来我家玩。可能西方对中国了解太少了就总觉得很好奇。特别很多外国人，包括跟我讨论中外文化差异的法国同学，我觉得欧洲年轻人还是多花些时间了解自己国家历史，再看看世界史，然后再慢慢了解中国历史。中国那么多民族能融合繁荣至今不是一朝一夕的，这个美国是理解不了的也不可能在未来解决这个问题。

Here in Canadian province of Quebec, wear religious symbol if your are a state servants, whether be it the hospitals, schools or offices. And we all know about France no Muslim women can wear their Hijab or any kind of Islamic modesty, if you do you will be dragged and fined.

Religion is not benned, it’s just don’t take such importance in commun life organization. As a Chinese person, religion just like dance club, you can choose or not choose it, of course, if your mother is a dancer, you may be proposed to dance since childhood.

That's VERY REASONABLE indeed...HERE in my country our constitution states the SEPARATION of the GOV'T and the CHURCH BUT the Dominant Church never adheres to that they even USES the PULPIT to teach the people TO BE AGAINST THE GOV'T and the GOV'T does nothing about it( because the people will rally to defend the Church ) and they are used to it...

Not so. I attended one local Chinese church and was surprised that a pastor said in a sermon to give thanks to God, not the Communist Party! I asked my Chinese Christian colleague about it. She wasn't surprised. I am a foreigner.

In the texts, even Buddhists pay respect to various "gods" that exist in various planes. "Buddhism rejected Creator God & creation" - This is also partially correct. Buddhism rejects the (benevolent, personified) Almighty God (which contradicts with realities and logic) but does not reject the ability to "create" by super beings. "Gods" have certain ability to "create" with their mind. Buddhism calls the nature of our existence as "imperfect nature" or Mara, while all religions called it the (perfect, personified) almighty God. That's the difference. @@JWscandi Your theories are the perfect example of how the contamination of Buddhist teachings by Hindu/Brahmin dogma since the "Mahayana" period led so many people astray about Buddhism. For the basics, read the early Buddhist texts such as the Nikayas or the Agamas. Also read up on the historical development of Buddhism in India. Good reference books are Professor AK Warder's "Indian Buddhism", or an introductory text: Professor D. Kalupahana's "Buddhist Philosophy- A Historical Analysis". There are many knowledgeable English speaking Buddhist monks still alive, such as Bhikkhu Bodhi in the US, or Ajahn Brahmavamso in Australia.Have some humility and listen to their discourses.

I don't know which so-called China you live in? The city where I live is only a second- and third-tier provincial capital. There are Buddhist, Taoist, Tibetan Buddhist, Christian, Catholic and Islamic buildings in the Central Plains, and churches and halls are everywhere. When I was in middle school and high school, it had been more than 20 years since then. On Christmas, my classmates and I would go to church to feel the Christmas atmosphere. During the Tibetan New Year, Tibetan Buddhism held pujas and Buddhist festivals. Mosques are too much here for us. There are too many. The Central Plains Buddhism is full of people on the first and fifteenth day of the lunar calendar and the Buddha's birthday. Local Taoism also has a dharma meeting on its own festival! In addition to various festivals, the usual prayer service is a very common activity, worshiping Buddha and Muslims praying can be seen everywhere! Up to now, I have lived for more than 30 years, and I have never felt anything new!
