The Real Slim Sherri

Күн бұрын

Hey everyone! Hop in our virtual time machine and let's zip back to those awesome GenX Saturdays. Remember those? Waking up with the sun, knocking out those chores, and then diving into a bowl of cereal while those cartoons played.
No phones, no texts, just pure, unadulterated fun. We're talking bikes, street games, and that sacred run to 7-Eleven for the sweet stuff and those shiny baseball cards. And when those street lights flickered on, you knew it was time to dash home.
We're bringing all that back, the freedom, the games like 'ghost in the graveyard,' and capping it off with a classic TV dinner. So, let's rewind and enjoy a slice of that carefree, imaginative GenX life once more. #genxgrownup #genxkid #saturdayvibes #childhood #memories #adventures #nostalgia #throwback #70s #80s #replay #GenXNostalgia #SaturdayMemories #ChildhoodAdventures #MorningCartoons #OutdoorPlay #NoCellPhones #BikeRides #StreetGames #7ElevenSnacks #BaseballCards

As a teenager, I asked my mom why we always got new flashlights in our Christmas stockings, and why the junk tour was always full of fresh DD batteries, when she knew good and well that we were staying up past our bedtimes reading under the covers. She said “the same reason I sent you to the library on your bikes every Saturday and gave you five dollars for the Scholastic book fair every year. Are you the best read kid in the class or not?“ Thanks mom. 55 years old and still the best read kid in the class. ♥️

This is a 100% accurate depiction of what my Saturday was like when I was a kid. My millennial children actually had the benefit of a very similar childhood because I was a single mom and too poor for cell phones, and babysitters. They had to babysit each other after school.

I and my girls have the same story. They’re more appreciative of things like cell phones etc because of “having to wait sooooo longggg” to have one. They would’ve had to wait even longer had their dad not broken down to get the phones for them. 🤷🏼‍♀️

Only if you were lucky enough to have good parents, the rest brutally abused their kids & all of boomer society covered for each other & their parents' generation didn't say a peep out of shame to their reputation & they didn't want to raise their own grandkids because they utterly failed as parents by spoiling their kids.

This is why so many of us are masochistic. We are nostalgic and home sick for a hard childhood but, that is (I believe) because we were the last of the free range kiddos. We didn't get "time out" you slipped up and it was "Lights out" 💥 But the freedom was something worth the pain and rocky road. No camera phones so we got away with redrum💖"It was the best of times it was the worst of times"

We had time to think and dream our OWN way. We built things in empty lots or in the woods. I really hope that kind of individual creativity isn't lost. It takes a mental freedom that seems rare these days. To be fair, we still had Christian Dogma haunting us, looming over our joyful free moments, trying to rule over us with damnation and hell fire. I still have Christian PTSD. 😢

@dontfit6380 I didn't delete anything.. the person who posted this is the only one who could do that. Look, I keep some of the morals I was taught. Those core morals are the things that I feel are universal. What I am opposed to is the teaching of morality through fear. We learn morality through life's lessons. I don't want to continue this discussion in someone else's thread about the joys of childhood. Enjoy your day

We had 1 bike for 10 or so kids. We would meet up at "Sand Hill," where the pavement stopped. Took turns with wild rides down the gravel & sand hill road, turning & dumping into the creek at the last second. Then we climbed trees & watched the dust rise from the road. We made koolaid & carried it in those old plastic "canteen" things. Made peanut butter & jelly sandwiches, wrapped in wax paper. No one had a backpack, so we had an old paper grocery bag to tote stuff around. Meandered home after firefly watching. Loved every minute.

I'd love to go back in time and experience this again. My parents.. God rest their souls, pushing us out the door and mom waving and yelling to be home when the streetlight comes on. 😢 Saturday night was popcorn and scary flicks, nestled into a bean bag chairs after having a shake and bake chicken dinner. This is after a whole days fun of wandering the streets with my friends or playing at the park. Remember turning into a teenager, and the curfew was expanded. 😂 we had it made back then. Saturdays during the school year for me were awesome! I'd go to a local bowling alley with my brother and we'd basically spend the day. There was a league in the morning, one in the afternoon and many weekends, there would be a Saturday night bowling tournament, as well as "Travel league" on Sunday mornings. He had his license and his own car...so we didn't need to depend on Dad to drive us. Lots of great people and great fun! In the summer, well I was on my own basically. Ride my bike all over town, and many days beyond. Can't do lots of that stuff now due to medical issues, but I'm rehabbing....so maybe I'll get back to bowling by 2025? Thanks for making me think of those cool Saturdays growing up.

Yes, my life looked like that too. In summer, every single year, mom would hand my brother and I two dollars each and we would walk to the bus stop, ride to the local college pool for lessons, stay for free swim afterwards, bus home, but always stop at 7-11 for 5 cent candies. We would fill our pockets full and goof around with friends before we were allowed back home.

Chores happened in the evening for us. We woke up for food and cartoons. outside to meet in the courtyard (lived in apartments). Would play tag or go off to play somewhere like the school (lived across from one at one time), apartment playground, or park. Sometimes, we would do a job for spending money to get stuff. Picking up trash was a common job for kids. Go home at dark and do chores. TV went on and one of us would cook dinner. After dinner the parents would leave and we did whatever until time to sleep (usually right before they came home).

No brakes, bald tyres, no shirt, helmet no matter how many times i went over the handlebars, i'd dust the dirt off my grazed flesh and get back on again. (Only to stack it again later on as I'm casually riding with no hands on the handlebars and decide to turn a corner (with no hands) while riding on top of loose gravel that i didnt notice. Fun times. Found a quarter, put the dog on a leash, head to DD for a free munchkin for the dog with a donut to eat in the park and act like you own this town. 😊 I went back to my local park years ago and there’s a fence around the playground, signs and fencing saying to stay on the trail, keep out of the brook and no fishing in the pond, no feeding the ducks. 😢 I’m glad I moved to a home with enough land that people say I own a park now. 😂

Ferile, no, we were connected … to our friends, to our rituals, pennies on the tracks, and things that were real. We all know why dirt tastes lie. We could touch our fun. Feel it.
