As a 70+ year old aficionado of traditional Americana music it so pleases me to know the baton has been passed to the likes of Billy Strings and Marcus King. Regardless of labelled category or genre the best music is that passed as a baton from elders to younger generations. Passing the baton does not dictate exact replicating but a trust that those receiving the baton will carry it forward with just and honest honor to the passer and their passing mentors... This makes for a consistent listening enjoyment for all. May there never be a finish line just a continued passing of the baton thus making a lasting tradition of excellence and shared enjoyment.

I didn’t know who billy strings was until I saw him play early in his adult career sometime 2017 when I was hopping from one festival to the next. He opened with dust in a baggie and I fell in love with the energy he pours into his craft, attention to detail, direction of band cohesion, skill level, humble and jovial attitude on and off the stage, and the homage he is adamant on paying to his torch passers. Such a genuine man, and it is obvious that he has felt raw, motivational hard times that put the blues in his message (both from his instrument and his voice.) my most highly regarded and loved current musician since that day, and am so Grateful that whatever influence and circumstance gave him to us, did so, because he has made some good times great for me, and pulled me through some times I didn’t know I’d be seeing the other side of. I spread the seeds that fall off of his strings every chance and they always blossom into love no matter which unreceptive patch I throw them on. Converting mid 20’s age people to real music these days isn’t so easy as it should be. Such shallow and infertile dirt many of my peers have become but he, and his amazing following are the fertile soil of the Nile only spoken of since the Old Testament.

When I was a kid my mom went out every Sunday night with her church lady friends. My dad gave us three options every Sunday with dinner. A Norman Vincent Peale sermon, or Spanish guitar/Bluegrass on the ole mono record player. We always chose bluegrass. Got to college mid 70's and Will the Circle album and Old and in the Way we wildly popular. Bluegrass never left me! I love all the new band that Bob Weird mentioned. He forgot Railroad Earth.

@flappycelery4 жыл бұрын
AHAH! Billy Failing's banjo solo at 7: 24 is a tribute to Peter Tork of the Monkees (died this year)! It is, note for note, straight out of "Last Train To Clarksville"! I had to listen 3-4 X before it came to me. Peter York was the only one of the Monkees they LET play his own instrument! He was actually more proficient at drums and banjo, but the producers wanted him up front on guitar. He had a music career in Greenwich Village. Stephen Stills went to an audition and when he didn't get it, he recommended Tork! He wrote music (and hence, one of the Monkees series closing songs), played piano at the age of nine, then also played drums, banjo, acoustic bass, harpsichord and guitar! He was friends with and jammed with George Harrison!! After they realized how talented he was they "let" him play keyboards, bass guitar, banjo, harpsichord, and more on their recordings. Look it up!

I'm a relatively new Strings fan and I'm loving it. Fantastic energy and playing. Really enjoying the added electric parts here. Now this gives me a thought. What if after Band of Joy Robert Plant would have teamed up with Billy and his band? I thought Band of Joy was the best thing Plant could do and I am of the opinion he went backwards with the Sensational Soundshifters. I was wondering where he could go after Band of Joy still in the Americana way that would be more up and I saw Billy. It could be a fantastic and eclectic pairing. But I digress, Billy and company really rock it on their own...hugely.
