The remains of 215 Indigenous Canadian children were found on the site of the Kamloops Indian Residential School - the largest school the Canadian government legally mandated indigenous peoples to attend. Jericka Duncan spoke with a survivor of the school about the discovery.
Each weekday morning, "CBS This Morning" co-hosts Gayle King, Anthony Mason and Tony Dokoupil deliver two hours of original reporting, breaking news and top-level newsmaker interviews in an engaging and informative format that challenges the norm in network morning news programs.

The mandate came from the government but the operation was the Catholic Church. They need to be held accountable as well. This is how the church works. It is how it worked in Ireland with their "orphanages" and their Magdalene laundries, etc. Well, documented by survivors in Ireland that common punishment was to be left out in the rain or overnight as punishment. *Not the worse, there is nothing worse ONLY evil destruction of People* as part of the horrific past of both Canadian and US governments that only came to be because they took it by force which effected every race and culture. *Indigenous people Native Americans* forced into schools to conform to Canadian and Catholic ways and to forget there tradition and heritage they also had horrific events like the *Trail of Tears* and there villages burned and territories taken. *My Ancestors African-Americans were forced and sold into Slavery, bodies whipped, slashed, broken, hanged, and burned, treated less than human* ,our communities and homes burned setting us back *Tusla Race Riots the Destruction of Black Wall Street, Tusla Oklahoma 1921* we were kepted from education and generational wealth, left behind, and we never received justice but are constantly told to let it go and move on and *African Americans NEVER received proper compensation* like the others Natives, Jews, China, Japan etc. But if anyone empathizes with this story its us because our story's are too similar.

But I disagree, we were not treated the worst, not as bad as what black people went through. Or even other people. I hear the Portuguese are doing the same thing to the Tibetan people right now, as what the British did to the natives. Christian religion is horrible. The last time she saw him was when the teacher was escorting him out of the classroom. They told her he was going to see a doctor. She never saw him again, she figured he was so sick he had to return home. Years later when she left residential school her family asked where was her brother. When questioning the school, they told them he ran away long ago. With so many unanswered questions it left our family wonder, did he really run away?

America and Canada don't want it known that the Peninsula of Acadia was taken over by British forcing the Acadians into slavery or death. Forced to America on Slaveships and then being treated as second class citizens at best. Not allowed to sail back home and if they did their land was taken. There are many factors of why black and native can’t succeed now, and it is not cause of systemic racism. Asian has so many odd against them, but they succeed. @@StarLight-sl9ok So they treated them that horrifically not that long ago? We all need to do better when it comes to the indigenous people, no matter where we live. Even here in the US most are living in poverty. I hope we don’t have schools set up where they are forced to attend and they are abused like this. This is all so heartbreaking.

Because the government wanted all traditions and cultures extinguished, and brought into the fold of civilized peoples. If you don’t have a unique culture or language, if you have no knowledge of how to survive off the land like your ancestors did, thus becoming dependant on the ruling peoples. Eventually the minority would be bred out of existence, and the surviving winners have “full rights to the land” because there is no one left to be considered indigenous in any way shape or form left, except for skeletons and artifacts.

Then you might want to read up on Black history! I don't care what atrocity was done to an ethnic race of people ---no other people have stories such as these for as long as Black people have endured them. Suffering, Colonialization, genocide & just racist acts---(& still are) longer than any other race or ethnic group. No Other Race!

@@lillyess385 - Exactly. I've never understood why Canada seemed to escape criticism, as if there weren't already indigenous people living there before it was colonized by Europeans. Canada also had both Black and Native slaves before slavery was abolished by the British empire. Plus the continuing issues with mistreatment of their Native populations. How they managed to get such a squeaky clean reputation as if they've never harmed a soul is beyond me.

I find it astonishing (in a smh way) how many of these tragedies are caused or covered up by religion. Or even scarier that these people who committed these disgusting acts end up going home to their family, able to sleep, act like nothing's happened, and then end up going to church on Sunday. Makes my stomach turn.

It's the falling away that Apostle Paul said would happen before the antichrist shows up. These are those who reject Christ and the bible says they love to do their unrighteous deeds. That's how they can just go home and go to bed and go to church the next Sunday.
