I think Sailor Mars is one of the most iconic characters in the 90s. But her personality is a lot different in the two anime. In the first one, she's rather cartoony and a high-pitched voice definitely suits her. While in the second one, she's more calm and her mysterious side is portrayed well. So in my opinion, for the first one, Katie Griffin is perfect in the English dub. Emily Barlow was great too but only in the conversations. Cristina Vee, in my opinion, is perfect only in Crystal. I just don't find her low-pitched voice fitting in the cartoony 90s version. Her voice sounds inconsistent and trying too hard to copy the Japanese voice. But in Crystal, she perfectly portrayed Rei's more realistic personality. Both Japanese voices were perfect on their own.

Michie Tomizawa- She captures it perfectly, her humor makes me laugh, everything about it, I love it! Rina Sato- She sounds fine, she does good with serious moments, but with humorous moments, it sounds bland, so as always it sounds okay. Katie Griffin- She did a great performance, One of my favourite Mars english voice actress, i love her burns, it's just so perfect! Emilie Claire Barlow- She captured her humor good, but at some moments, gosh murder me, so it's a bit okay. Cristina Vee- Her humor, her voice, I love it, there's nothing I dislike about it, One of my other favourite Mars english voice actresses. You close your eyes and everyone sounds different and is immediately identifiable in DiC. Meanwhile everyone sounds the same in VIZ. Christina is virtually indistinguishable from Jupiter for a major part of the first dub. I challenge any VIZ fan to close your eyes and tell me who is talking in episode 23 in Ami's room when Mars and Jupiter are delivering lines OFF SCREEN or when Luna runs up to Mars and Jupiter to reactive them as senshi (all 3 have the same voice in that dialogue exchange). Katie was the sapphire spitfire, steel magnolia type voice. Christina was a bland generic deep sultry femme fatale type voice (for a middle schooler). I find It funny, how NOW none of the vizzers put Christina down for having such a lower register voice or make remarks about how no 14 year old sounds like that. In this case bc Katie actually sounds like a 14 year old, they pivot to her voice just doesn't match (suddenly) or to she sounds out of breath lol while the VIZ actor is perpetually flawless. That said, whatever happened, Christina was incredible in Crystal. For whatever reason she didn't phone her lines in and actually came to life. She was a stand out star in that dub.

When the senshi are reactivated by Luna, ALL 3 have the same voice. When Venus and Sailor Moon have the showdown in the makeover episode, they call out each other's names in THE SAME VOICE. The stiff writing of VIZ's dub really holds all of its actors back but Cristina Vee does a really good Rei despite that. Her voice also just sounds a lot more natural than say Sheh's Usagi does where it's clear she's doing a voice. Katie Griffin I like a bit better, her voice sounds younger and more appropriate given Rei's age. She sounds very lively and energetic which fits Classic Anime Mars, while Vee is good at the serious parts but sounds almost too mature for that version of the character otherwise. They're both really good actors and play their part well, I think Vee's voice is also great for Crystal with the show having an overall less goofy tone. Emilie-Claire Barlow is just bizarre hearing because it's literally just Venus/Mina's voice. It's hard to say if it's fitting or not because when I hear it it just sounds like I'm hearing Sailor Venus talk. Overall I think she's probably a decent replacement, well enough for filling in for Griffin for a few episodes, but she fits Venus much better, I'm glad they got Griffin to continue doing Mars' voice for the remainder of the 90s dubs.

Michie Tomizawa over Rina Satou, I think Rina sounds a bit too deep compared to the original series' Mars. Not really the same old hot-headed, fire tongued, sassy, bossy Mars I loved. Katie and Cristina easily for both original, and re-dub and Crystal respectively.

Does anyone know why Emilie took over for Katie for those few episodes and the movies? Wasn't she Sailor Venus? Was she the first Venus or second from the original dub?

I don't know if there was any reason other than her simply being recast for one reason or another. And Emilie barlow was venus' second voice.

She only took over for the last episodes of R and would later voice Venus in the last two seasons. Katie did all the movies. I think I read it was due to scheduling conflicts.
