@@MyDeepGuide Hi, I'm having an issue with connecting via WinSCP: The reMarkable shows me the 2 IP addresses. When I connect to the wifi IP, the error "Network Error: Software caused connection abort" happens, and if i use the usb IP, the error " timed out". Do you know why this connectivity issue is occuring? And if so, how to fix it?

THANKS!!! This process works for Remarkable 2. Note: make sure you template does not have a transparent background. Transparent backgrounds cause an erase error- requiring you to close the notebook before the erasure completes.

Great video (again). Can you also demonstrate this feature using Word as a png source? For me (but I guess for most people) using tables in Word for example is so much easier than using photoshop or gimp or something like that. Would be very useful for a broad audience I think. Awesome work!

Awesome, you really are my favorite source or Remarkable content. One note, and I don't know if this is specific to the Remarkable2, but you need the SVG version of the file too, otherwise, when you erase, eraser content don't refresh without exiting and re-opening the notebook or page. An easy hack, once you've installed the png version and made the changes to the JSON, is to start a blank notebook with this template. Then email it to yourself as a SVG, then rename that with the same name as the original template. Then save that in the same folder. I'm not as good at explaining technical content as Vojislav, but I hope that makes sense.

Wait, no, that actually doesn't fix it. Very weird. On my custom template, eraser marks don't disappear.

Aha, found it. I thought there was a step where you deleted all the white from the image, and made the background transparent. But if you do that, then "live" erasing doesn't work. With a flat PNG, and a white background, however, this issue is resolved. Just in case someone else comes across this problem!

Thanks a lot of for this video! Unfortunately i had a problem: When i try to copy any file or folder into a generic directory of remarkable (in this case a png file into templates folder) WINSCP send me an error message saying: "General failure (server should provide error description). Error code: 4 Error message from server: Failure Common reasons for the Error code 4 are: - Renaming a file to a name of already existing file. - Creating a directory that already exists. - Moving a remote file to a different filesystem (HDD). - Uploading a file to a full filesystem (HDD). - Exceeding a user disk quota." How can i fix them?

Exceeding a user disk quota. is the most likely reason. What is the file size ? You'll have to put it in another directory and use a symlink. But if you screw up your rM could have issues.

Hi, will the new custom templates persist after reMarkable updates? I guess they PNG files will but not the JSON file edits if they are updating original templates. An offline copy of the JSON file edits is probably important.

In forums people wrote that there is a connection issue since last update in december 2019. I tried to connect to the device by ssh but connection is always refused.

Hello, it's not possible to do it as you described, but if you create each individual template type that you intend to use, you can then freely combine different templates on different pages of a notebook. So in your example, first 4 pages would each have a different template, and then from page 5 and onwards, you can use a template you intend to use for the rest of the notebook. Remarkable will automatically apply the last page template to each new page added to the notebook, so after initial setup, it'll be automatic. I hope that this helps :)

No, but you can look for an SSH program that works on Mac and it should allow for similar functionality.

Thank you very much :) That's not possible, as the copy paste operations do not function on the background layer, which is the template or the base page content of a document.

Unfortunately no, since this is a hack, not an actual functionality that is supported by reMarkable. Also, please be aware that all of your custom templates will disappear after every system update, so keep them backed up somewhere to do the transfer a bit more easily each subsequent time. I really wish reMarkable would finally step up their software side of things and implement these basic functionalities already, so that they function as they should in the first place.

Template is simply a background image, and it doesn't affect the handwriting ability or text recognition, so yes on both questions :)

Hi. Clear explanation thanks. Just pre Ordered the remarkable 2 and preparing to convert my Noteshelf templates. Now I have one question I see in the Template folder the PNG and SVG version. Is there a reason to have both on the remarkable or is the advice to have just one.?

PNG is a fixed resolution format, SVG is a vector format, however, they both do the same thing. SVG files take less space and can be rescaled (read upscale) in a vector editing software without loss of quality, while PNG format is larger and can't be upscaled without loss of quality.

But if I understand it correctly only SVG formats should work. No guarantees of course as I learned from your latest video’s. No, both formats work, SVG takes up less space and is more flexible for editing. That's all it is. Every indication so far is that there will be zero difference in functionality between rM1 and rM2. This means, no improvements in the custom templates functionality, unfortunately.

What a great tutorial. Thank you so much! I have two more questions. Have you got an idea to solve this 2 problems: 1.) I cannot export my writing with the template in one file. If I will do this with the rM app via pdf or png, the templates are lost. The export only works with send by email. 2.) I want to create a svg-file for every template, but I don't know how to implement this. Do you know a way?

Excellent and thorough as always. Another KZbinr, Ryan Miles, shows how to do this using a Mac, though he does not include the step of saving a backup copy of the Templates folder, which I think is good insurance against unforeseen mishaps. Questions: 1. Is there a way to import or customize the icons? 2. The company einkpads.com has a suite of three apps. They are Template Installer, Binder Cloud Notebook Sync, and Screen Customizer. Would you consider doing a Deep Guide review of these apps? I ask because third party developers may fill the functionality gaps of the rM OS until the company catches up its software to the more comprehensive standards of the rest of the e-ink devise industry.

Hi, thanks for watching. Actually no, I won't be doing that mainly because until it is natively supported by reMarkable system in some way, we will always have the issue that all custom changes will be lost after each update and work will become corrupted or broken. So it's not something that makes the tool a reliable tool, and can cause problems for users.

Hi sorry to bother you with a lot of questions, But I just order Remarkable 2, and should be shipped in November. Since I know all the stuff like json and stuff like that, I went directly to the wiki, and for my suprise, I learn that remarkable software is published on git hub. It's an open source software. So you can personalize remarkable at your own needs wow

Well, it's not exactly open, but some people did an amazing job reverse engineering it and assembling an API of sorts, so yeah, it's possible to dig in deep :) It's not official or supported by reMarkable, so any tweaking of that sort is viable to affect the warranty. That's why I haven't done anything with mine, but once I receive the Gen 2, then my Gen 1 is going to be my test buddy :)

Well it depends what you want and how you want to use it. If you want just certain pages of a book you have to export as a PDF, the easiest way is open the PDF in Chrome, go to print, choose option Save as PDF and mark the pages you want to export in the new document. Once exported you can the import that PDF into the reMarkable and use it how you need it. If you want to make a template, you would need to use the same way as above to save a single page as a PDF and ose an image editing software to paste and format that page within the 1404x1872 resolution image that is required for a PNG reMarkable template. Then save it as a PNG and follow the video instructions on how to get it into the reMarkable.

If you followed it "to a T" then you made a backup when I instructed to do so, so I would restore the original configuration file and reboot the Remarkable to restore it.

If you cannot follow these instructions and you don't know what Photoshop is, then you really shouldn't try to do this, because there is a high probability to do something wrong. A basic level of computer proficiency is required for doing this procedure, and it seems that unfortunately you are not at that level.
