I have owned a Helite Turtle 2 airbag vest since 2020 and use it every single ride. My son is about to take his MSF Basic Course and I bought one for him as well. Also wear a modular full face helmet, armored shorts and knee and shin armor under my pants and motorcycle boots and gloves. I too live in South Florida (Miami) and even with the heat I gear up every single ride, no matter how short. Knock on wood in 30 years of riding I have yet to crash or go down and really only have had a couple of somewhat close calls that with defensive riding and situational awareness avoided being accidents. I have a ‘20 Scout Bobber and a ‘23 Yamaha XSR900. Once you recover and are ready to ride give me a shout and will be happy to ride with you. Heal up and thank goodness you will be OK.

Been riding 44yr, still at 68. All crotch rockets. Been down once...1984. My head went into the curb....and my helmet saved my ass. And face....since I wore a Bell full face. No broken bones, but my fairing was a mess and I was sore as hell from the bike landing on top of me. Still have the exhaust burn on my calf!

Rembo, I’ve kicked around the idea of an air vest for two years. The cost and added hassle kept me on the fence. After watching your videos over the last two weeks, I’m off the fence. I decided on the Dainese Air Vest because it doesn’t require tethering, and it works if rear-ended. I ordered my vest on line, and should be here tomorrow. If this vest ever saves me, I’ll have you to thank. If I never need it, the peace of mind it will provide will make the money well spent. Looking forward to more KZbin from you in the future. Get well my friend.

Shoutout to Rib #4, the goat for staying unbroken. Glad to see you on the mend Rembo, but so bummed to hear of the nature of these injuries. Yikes. What's better, the airbag vests with the cable that connect to the bike or the ones connected to the phone with the accelerometer connection? Be well

My concern with the tethered airbag is that on a hard low side, you may not be far enough off the bike for it to deploy. Electronics are getting better and have really proven themselves, so I am putting my money with the electronic version of deployment.

I had an accident over 3 years ago and made a Rookie mistake by applying too much front brake in a higher gear. Consequently, locked the front brake ( the old bike did not have ABS) and got thrown off the bike and catipulted into the Air in a forward direction. I instinctively put my right hand out to mitigate the impact of hitting the road. Fractured my wrist as a consequence. Gloves did their job and stopped any skin from being ripped off my hand. Kevlar motorcycle pants and motorcycle boots provided full protection to my legs and feet. And my motorcycle jacket stopped any more damage to my torso and right arm. Most importantly my full face helmet provided full protection as my head slammed sideway into the road. As a result the helmet protected me fully. If I had no helmet on I would be dead. In the end the accident only resulted in a a fractured wrist that needed a cast on it for 8 weeks. Then had to do a few months of physio to relearn how to use my right hand. No other injuries because I was wearing full protective gear! So I know the full value of protective gear. If I had not worn it, my injuries would have been more numerous and serious and would have resulted in a longer recovery time. I was very lucky and I've been back motorcycling for many years and enjoying it. And it is good to know that your own gear mitigated the damage to a large degree.

Thanks for the update Rembo. And glad that you’re doing better-little by little right. You are doing the motorcycle community a great service by sharing your experience. Sadly but true there are many out there who believe it will never happen to them. Just today I saw someone wearing a helmet, jacket and shorts. Obviously he favors his upper torso. BTW…the Alpinestars Tech-Air 5 fits over the shoulders, not a vest. I’d wear one on the track, but probably too restrictive for street riding combined with a jacket. The Tech-Air 3 is a vest but you will have to provide your own back protector.
@jimmyteter
@jimmyteter 5 ай бұрын
I have the Tech 5 and ride under my leather jacket on the street and its not bad at all. The back piece that the canisters sit in protrudes a bit and you can feel it but the rest of the jacket is pretty low profile. I'd say well worth the added protection it gives than the vest only version.

Thanks for the update! Glad to hear you are on the mend. It's amazing how a slow speed crash can mess someone up so much. Pavement is not forgiving. I wear the Alpinestars Tech 5 air vest. I've needed it twice in the last 2 years while doing some Club racing. One of my crashes was at 70 plus miles an hour. I low-sided just like you, and walked away with no upper body injuries. I somehow managed to break my right hand, and finished off my left hip, which is already degrading due to an old Army injury. But I have to say that the air vest did its job. You have my two thumbs up on using that vest! Heal up quickly so you can get back on that bike and finish that review. Nothing kicks an old Marine's ass!

First, definitely buying a vest - leaning toward the Dainese as I want to wear it outside my jacket. Thank you for sharing your experience, I think you are doing a great service to riders that don't apprecaite the value of having gear in a crash. I used to race cvma, wera and wsmc, so I've had my fair share of crashes. The one that messed up my neck was pretty bad and what helped me in recovery - sorry to offer unsolicited advice - are two supplements. Magnesium Citramate by Thorne - helps relax your muscles and with sleep. Ligaplex II by Standard Process - its for broken bones and damaged joints. Its no miracle cure, but every little bit helps. Take care of yourself Rembo and wishing you a speedy recovery.

Just happened to catch this video. I had an accident in 2020 a car ran (60 mph I believe) a red light way late and I was going 40mph and no way to avoid hitting the rear side of the car. Witnesses said I flew 100 feet. God and my Helmet saved my life. Full face helmet is essential in my opinion - bare min! I see so many with no helmet or those crappy half helmets. Protect your entire head and face. Had 12 compound fractures (bones sticking out) my left arm, two compound breaks above my left knee and one break below my knee, fractured ankle, six broken ribs right side and my right lung filled with blood and fluid had to be drained going in through my back. Broken left shoulder and wrist and fractured right shoulder and the bone in my upper right shoulder was warped and still has a bulge to this day. My helmet had similar scratches and I had a brain bleed but all in all after four surgeries and rods and pins Im doing pretty well considering. I used the pain meds and my trauma surgeon and doctor slowly tapered me off. No way I wanted to feel that pain every day no way especially during physical therapy days. 30 days in ICU and another 30 days in hospital then they moved to therapy hospital 30 more days in recovery and therapy followed with three months in a wheelchair staying with my Mom and Step Dad they had to build a wheel chair ramp before the hospital allowed me to stay there (thankfully my step dad was a carpenter aluminum ramps cost a fortune to rent or buy) I was lucky they took me in vs having to go to an assisted living care home with elderly and demensia patients hollering all day and night. Had a friend who had to go to assisted living after his accident and he said it was horrible there. Finally 8 months of physical therapy. Helmets absolutely save lives! I dont really ride much now but I agree the vests are a good idea. Too many people distracted on their cell phones and running red lights I see every day now. People seem on edge and aggressive especially toward motorcycles. I guess the stunt riders ruin it for the rest of us just wanting a peaceful ride. Glad you are okay and not in worse shape. I just saw another channel (Moto Giant) a guy had his sleeping bag get caught in his back wheel and high sided lost his right foot and two toes on his left foot. He said he was doing 80 mph too! Riding is serious business and you never know but make sure gear on the bike is secure and wear gear and always keep a sharp lookout especially in all intersections!! things happen so fast when you least expect it. Finally, last rant, when I was in the ICU another rider was admitted the nurse told me has was 60 years old on his first ride with a new harley and had an accident with no helmet first ride. Nurse said the man will be in a nursing home with brain injuries the rest of his life! I pray often for those trauma staff and first responders they are true heros and see all this madness every single day! They told me several stories about motorcycle recks every spring it always ramos up! Be careful. God Bless be safe yall.

Two unsolicited suggestions: Get an Arai Corsair X (Ducati has a great looking one) or the equivalent. I don’t think the side protection was very good on your AGV, given the relative low speed of your incident. If you want to ditch the muscle relaxers, try Aleve & two Tylenol, together, a few times a day. I used that, post surgery, instead of narcotics, and also use it to calm my rotator cuff flare-ups. The Alpinestars Tech 5 vest (which I have) is good, but their more recent offerings are better, allowing the user to replace the gas cylinders.

I’ve ordered and tested several airbags in the last month or so. I was looking for the one with most protection while being able to replace the cartridges at home. The best ones are Alpinestars 7x and Off Road. The other offerings from alpinestars (tech air 10, 5, 3) need to be sent back to the factory every time there’s a deployment and it costs close to $300, aside from the down time. I ended up choosing the off road for 2 reason, it comes with chest, shoulder, elbow protection, and 3 ride modes (street, enduro, rally), while the 7x only has street and race modes, so you can’t use it off road. Helites don’t cover shoulders and I don’t think their system is as good as Alpinestars with all their race experience. Having said that, 5:11 I also just ordered the new Helite Backpack. Not as protective as the Alpinestars, but way more practical, so I will never have an excuse to ride without an airbag, even on short rides. I hope you get better soon and make a comprehensive video testing all airbags available since there’s currently none.

I had a broken clavicle, 7 fractured ribs and punctured lung. The first three weeks were awful! This happened a year ago, so I'm also looking for a vest

Well, looks like you and I will both have some things in common and certainly will be wearing vests in the future

Yet another video to remind me of why, after a broken arm 6 weeks ago, I retired from motorcycling permanently. Not worth it.

@@RemboUSMC exactly. Also , some you can just recharge yourself after deployment (Helite) and some you have to send back to manufacturer for a fee (Dainese). Some are under jacket and some over. A* is under jacket and Eturtle is over.

Makes it difficult here in Florida to wear one all year-round, but I think I’ll just ride less and not ride without one anymore

@@RemboUSMC yeah, understand. I'm going to look at other options. The tech air is sweltering. Or maybe a lighter jacket over it.

KLIM ai-1 will learn after every incident and update their software accordingly. If you purchase Alpinestars or Dainese, there is no learning period.

The helmet you see is an AGV - K6. I had on gloves that you could see in the video, my jacket was an REAX with a full back plate from Alpine stars. I had writing jeans on that worked well.

That has the opposite effect actually. Milk is so acidic that it draws the calcium out of your bones. Countries with the highest amount of dairy consumption also have the highest incidence of osteoporosis in women and pelvic fractures in men.
