When I was nine years old, my grandmother took me on a three week trip to Europe. Remember the 60's? Our first stop was Amsterdam, and one of the first items on our itinerary was a visit to The Riijksmuseum to see The Nightwatch. It was quite large, that's what I remember, but at that age I didn't truly appreciate the moment. Looking back now I am glad I had the experience, thanks for the memory.

"Naked people tangled up in sheets..." Thanks, Simon. I'll never be allowed in a museum or gallery again because as soon as I see a piece of art depicting that very thing, I'll burst into raucous laughter and be escorted out of the building for disturbing the peace. 🤣

As an artist and future curator, I applaud for finally telling a more accurate account then the story about the Night Watch ruining his career, as every art teacher I had told this story. It is hard to correct it in our minds. We can compare it to once believing the story of George Washington cutting down a cherry tree. But it was really the invention of one of his biographers. We can easily believe the sensational lie than the boring truth.

The point of _The Painter in His Studio_ is the fact that he stands and observes his work-in-progress from a distance, when most painters sat at the easel. Notice the wear on the rung of the easel, the result of decades feet resting on it.

I've always thought that the true greats of art must be the opposite of someone like me who has ADHD. To apply paint to feathers like that, to concentrate on the piece for so long and not get distracted. It's totally beyond me.

Or maybe it is ADHD that made them hyperfocus on what they were doing.
@itarry4
@itarry4 3 жыл бұрын
@@grown.ass.nerd. ADHD doesn't work like that from everything I know about it, as a sufferer from a time before every kid who's a bit over active gets the title I've always had an interest in it and needed to find a way to help me stay focused, it took years back then to get diagnosed. We do hyper focus at times but it never ever lasts long before we wander again, they'd have to keep stopping and returning which would really harm their flow. The hyper focus, good memory, thing is a big part of how I cope, I just have to have non important subjects to distract my mind when it wanderers then go back again. Bit more to it obviously but that's the basics. They might well have something similar but different in the way it makes you stay hyper focused rather than not being able to focus for more than a few minutes though, that's definitely possible I'd say. The slightly long answers is also a bit of a thing I have.. 🤔 😉 😅

@@grown.ass.nerd. My mother started painting at 50. She had been losing her hearing for decades, was feeling isolated, so my father bought her a starter kit for Christmas. She painted every second she could. Started off with oils. She would have 2 or 3 going at the same time, and a hairdryer going to dry her work, so she could get back to painting as soon as possible. It made her really happy.

@@itarry4 I have to disagree based on my own experience. I have ADD, and I hyper focus on things more than going from one thing to another. If I'm interested in something I'll research it to the point of exhaustion, and have a hard time getting anything else done until I do eventually lose interest
