Agree, Remco wanted the stage too and just rode a sustained high pace hoping to drop Yates off the wheel and/or to catch him on the less steep section…..and he nearly succeeded! Perhaps he’s slightly overconfident, but at least it makes him an entertaining and attacking rider, bit like MvdP. Always believes that he can win. 😂

I think Remco pacing up the climb eliminated any GC threat from Plapp or Bilbao. And Yates was never going to take a minute from him. If Remco is sure Yates can outsprint him for the stage win if he just follows, he may as well work in the lead over Yates. That suits his style of sustained efforts better. It isn't likely Yates will crack but something strange may happen to him on a very hot day. It looks like a no-lose tactic to me.

He shouldn't have paced imo. If Bilbao and Plapp already got dropped, they won't be a threat for GC anymore and Remco doesn't need to take time on them either. He should have sit in Yates wheel and think about the stage win, only worry about GC when it is actually needed (like Plapp or Bilbao coming back on). Especially if Yates still wanted to do something in GC he had to keep riding.

@@janbregar2561 You are overestimating Yates for GT. He never podiumed one despite riding for the best GC team for the last 2 years and getting his chances. He really lacks the consistency needed for a GT. I don't think we'll see little gaps in GC when there's a fight between Vingegaard and Pogacar, maybe between these 2 yes, but unlikely the other ones. Maybe Mas can also do really good if he's in topshape. *often happens with little TT kms* Except the last 2 years most of the differences were made on the climbs, not the TT's.
