Remedies for Sin of Discouragement

Discouragement can be described as a paralysis of the soul or a reduction in one’s courage. It results when one tires to do something good, experiences failure, and then gives up entirely. The devil tempts us to it for he revels in preventing good. Discouragement disguises itself as compunction or humility, both of which effectively dispel it. Compunction is a sorrow for past sins. It looks closely at reality in order not to sin again. Yet discouragement looks to the future with unrealistic sweeping generalizations because it is chained by the past. Humility recognizes one’s limitations and God’s power, thereby avoiding rash action. Yet discouragement stems from pride which blocks God’s action in the soul. Remedies for discouragement include making an act of hope, trusting in God’s grace, having good friends, recalling past success, and frequent confession. Very true. There was one specific instance when I came across a very very difficult time (whenever I think of Jesus' agony in the garden, it's almost like that feeling-- I think-- deep hurt, disappointment, fear, discouragement...) Then I suddenly thought of our Blessed Mother and declared I believe in miracles and I felt okay in an instant Did a prayer journey with her and yes, I got my miracle. Still, I always pray for the grace of faith.

I don’t think I’ve ever even heard ”compunction” used in a sentence, let alone defined and strayed alongside humility as its adjacent virtue. Wow. It makes sense too, that I wouldn’t hear it discussed in reformed circles, because it implies and demands recognition of our free will and our ability to make choices.

I heard a homily on wisdom today and I would say in addition to this teaching, ask the Holy Spirit for wisdom - enlightment and understanding of our decision-making processes and from there, tweak our behavior and how we make decisions, and who our true friends really are. If you have absolutely no one and even if you do, you can always ask your priest during confession and he will guide you if he's listening to Jesus. Your confession is something like... you know Father, i don't think i made such a good decision about... OR .. I confessed to my priest my personal depression and why, and the priest guided my thinking and absolved me since i did feel sinful and confessed this as wrong behavior for being depressed.

Often times when I'm at work, I try my best to do my job in a better way and avoid making mistakes. But sometimes I do make mistakes and then my supervisor gets upset and whatever says to me, I feel emotionally upset and discouraged. But my mom says that making mistakes is only human and it's true but she said that I shouldn't let my mistakes get the best of me at all and I shouldn't be discouraged either. And the best way to overcome my mistakes and discouragements and that is by praying the Holy Rosary and going to confession and even the Divine Mercy novena and Chaplet. And even my Patron Saint, Saint Michael the archangel tells me that I should trust in God and not be discouraged at all and the Blessed Virgin Mary tells me not to be discouraged either.

Sin of discouragement/ despair -Like a paralysis of soul/lack of heart/lack of the strength of heart that courage gives us -Someone tries to do something good, experiences failures, and gives up entirely -Compunction is sorrow for past sin/looks at the past -Compunction gets to the heart of the matter/ analyzing where you went wrong -Discouragement looks at the future and totalizes everything/ separates one from reality, setting unrealistic goals -Lack of humility -Humility looks at our limitations but sees no limitations in God -Discouragement comes from the devil: he doesn’t want you to even try How to overcome discouragement: -Make an act of hope and trust in God’s power to overcome limitations -Frequent confessions -look back at times when you made good choices and let God strengthen you -friends (friends carry you when you’re discouraged, make good friends, make friends with the Saints and Mary) Think of the friends who carry the paralytic. Their faith brings about his healing. It’s important to encourage others.

I tried frequent confession once & was told to cop on to myself by the priest & that he would refuse to hear my confession if I continued to come to him..I was also told so many other conflicting things by various other priests regarding the faith & about what is & isn't sin. How are we supposed to advance in our spiritual life if we are getting so much conflicting advice from one priest to another??
